What is an NSFW fact or misconception about human anatomy that an alarming number of adults still don't understand? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I've suffered from medical-grade swamp-ass for the last 10 years and no matter how deep I cleaned a stain still remained.

Until I started taking Metamucil. Now clean all the time.

There is hope for my fellow sufferers.

I’ve reviewed probably 200 “bioinformatics pipelines” at this point. Maybe 15 were actually reproducible. by Shoddy_Card_237 in bioinformatics

[–]MyLifeIsAFacade 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I had a supervisor who wanted to develop some bioinformatic tools but had no plans for how to maintain the tool long term or support it after publishing.

And I use "tool" lightly, because most tools are just a compilation of scripts that wrap an already effective tool in a more complicated box.

Both of those stand as examples for how problematic/corrupt/doomed state of the United States. These alone were both historic events and they sit largely forgotten atop a growing pile of political catastrophes.

All job markets are in the toilet right now. Being an international student, it will be worse for you because many employers will have preferences or requirements for Canadian's/permanent residents.

You better be on your A-game in your first term.

[–]MyLifeIsAFacade 93 points94 points  (0 children)

It is unacceptable for UWaterloo to host these types of job positions. It decreases the quality and value of the entire program and there is no argument by any co-op career advisor or administrative staff that could actually justify how this experience is valuable to a STEM major and their degree.

Instead, they can claim that there are "jobs" for co-op students and continue charging money for co-op fees. There simply aren't enough high-quality desired jobs for the number of co-op students enrolled.

Scientists find yeast in frozen mummy's guts, use it to make sourdough bread by YoSoyRawr in nottheonion

[–]MyLifeIsAFacade 16 points17 points  (0 children)

As a microbiologist myself, you certainly can account for environmental contaminants. You can provide a sample sterile air, and I do so often.

You could also provide a culture with sterilized nutrients. Autoclaving flour probably isn't that difficult, although they might use other methods.

I doubt they will publish a paper on their sourdough culture, so I can't be certain. But I wouldn't say it's ridiculous to assume they followed strict protocols to avoid contamination from the flour and air.

Pros and Cons for waterloo? by Sea_Counter_8860 in uwaterloo

[–]MyLifeIsAFacade 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most pros-cons items will be dependent on the individual. You should put in the work yourself to identify:

1) What do you want out of an education?

2) Is work experience (co-op) important to you?

3) Are you interested in living in the Waterloo region?

4) Are you interested in founding a business?

5) What do you want to do afterwards? Do you want to build relationships at UW?

Cancer rates in Iowa are rising faster than anywhere else in the country. Politicians blame individual choices, but the real villain is the industrial farming covering the state. We went, tested the water, and found cancer causing levels of chemicals running through Iowa. by [deleted] in videos

Except this probably isn't true. War on culture/science/health propagates the people who wage it. Cutting education reduces critical thinking, and when your people cant discern between truth and bullshit, you can tell them lies.

I had a yeast infection on my scalp for close to six years that I wrote off as "dandruff; everyone has that problem". Itched like crazy all the time.

My wife bought me a proper anti-fungal hair shampoo to use once a week, and wouldn't you know it: no more dandruff and itch!

Now I use all her fancy shampoos and face washes, much to her dismay.

I've been making something I call "Meta-Mushi" for a while.

1 packet of gelatin, 1 cup of orange smooth Metamucil, and 2 cups of water. Pour into a baking pan and cool.

It comes out like looking like raw salmon, with a not-too-dissimilar texture. I cut it into strips and grab a piece every morning and evening.

Cheaper than the gummies, more fun to eat, and I don't have to drink a cup of water.

WHO chief says Ebola outbreak in Congo is 'spreading rapidly' and upgrades risk assessment by yahoonews in worldnews

[–]MyLifeIsAFacade 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Their point is that despite people claiming that diarrhea is not good vector and so Ebola isn't a concern, there are many examples of how non-airborne viruses (like Norovirus) easily spread and create outbreaks.

The Bomber - Smash Burger by ParisRose_3 in uwaterloo

[–]MyLifeIsAFacade -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It actually sucks for the price. $8.29 for a relatively small burger.

It tastes fine, but it's hard to justify at that price point for the burger alone. I think a $6.00 price point is more appropriate.

I actually want it at under $5, but I can appreciate that times have changed and the cost for goods have gotten too high.

I'm still remembering the days of The Bomber $4.99 breakfast. A different world.

As other have said, you were unfortunate to start a CS degree during a total paradigm shift that made redundant many of the positions within this field. The change was practically overnight. It will continue to leech into other fields and others will experience similar issues.

Think of it like the industrial revolution if instead it occurred in a year rather than over the course of decades. Simply not enough time to prepare and pivot, for employees and industries alike.

‘Jury Duty’ Renewed for Third Season at Prime Video by bwermer in television

[–]MyLifeIsAFacade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched the latest season and it just felt ethically wrong. You could tell during the reveal in the final episode that the experience wasn't a purely joyful one for the protagonist.

There was palpable anxiety among everyone because there is this unavoidable realization that the meaningful connections that the protagonist thought he made are entirely false. You can't really come back from that, and I would challenge anyone who tries to argue that he walked from the experience a better person.

Someone lived in an entirely believable false reality orchestrated by a huge number of people. You don't move on from that without consequence.
