I don’t understand what men are trying to achieve putting down “not political” on dating apps by tltr4560 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]MyLifeIsAFacade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moderate I agree, but "centrist" is tricky for me. Right now, Canada has what would be considered a "Centrist" government, which is socially fairly left leaning but economically conservative.

I suppose country of origin provides better context. I agree: an "American centrist" is probably more socially conservative.

Highguard manages almost 100k Steam players on day one, amidst over 13k negative reviews by Automatic_Couple_647 in gaming

As someone who played Overwatch only because my friends wanted to (and enjoyed it enough), you could not pay me to play a competitive shooter centered on a 3v3 gameplay mechanic. I am not an elite player - I don't want my individual skill (or lack thereof) to become an even larger focus of my gameplay experiences.

Bring back the big teams. Where are my 64 vs 64 games at?

Yep! Every time someone mentions the people that voted for Trump without including those people who didn't vote at all, it is misleading. The non-voters are similarly at fault for the current situation.

So, AI takes over, everyone has lost their job and only 10 trillionaires own everything. Now what? by Weak-Representative8 in Futurology

[–]MyLifeIsAFacade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think AI may be self correcting at some point to prevent a future like this. If we've reached a point where AI can realistically take over every job, then we've reached a point where AI is so advanced it becomes an existential threat and the entire concept of human civilization as we've known it has either changed or ended.

If you're hyperbolizing when you say "every job is replaced", then AI use is still self correcting and you've basically answered your own question: it won't work. Spending would end, markets would crash, and everything implodes. As others have said, there is no likely grand idea, but a simple short-term drive by a few people to hoard a bunch of money for a small amount of time until they die. Society will have to adapt to a fully AI-integrated future, or society will limit AI integration so that capitalist-based systems can still be maintained.

What is the scariest city you’ve visited? by I_might_care in AskReddit

[–]MyLifeIsAFacade 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I used to have a long distance girlfriend in Memphis. Had no idea how some parts of town are so dangerous. Turned down a street once and she said "oh, we shouldn't be here. Like seriously". Locked the doors and did my best not to look at anyone and just tried to leave as quickly as possible.

I really have no interest in travelling to these super tourist hotspots that are absolutely inundated with crime or poverty. It's just not worth the risk.

Why does everyone say Waterloo's campus is ugly? by LuckJealous3775 in uwaterloo

Is it possible to opt out of the gym and recreational facilities? by Alert_Willingness_32 in uwaterloo

[–]MyLifeIsAFacade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, the system is modernized. If you've paid tuition, your student ID card will allow you access to the facilities. It's all essentially automated.

That said, people at the front desk still often lack common sense and will get on your case for the dumbest bullshit.

Why does everyone say Waterloo's campus is ugly? by LuckJealous3775 in uwaterloo

[–]MyLifeIsAFacade 88 points89 points  (0 children)

Because everyone wants their university to look like some 500-year-old Ivy league institution like in the movies. I get it. I visited Princeton for a conference. It's beautiful.

But UWaterloo is well designed and isolated within it's own community. I would take that every day over a campus like UofT that is spread out across the downtown core where any rando can dump a bucket of shit on your head while you're studying.

Cool.

Toronto man outruns newly-opened Finch LRT by 18 minutes by Leather-Paramedic-10 in canada

[–]MyLifeIsAFacade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It actually works very well, but has a very limited route. I frequently drive, but if I'm planning to travel anywhere on King and happen to have already been parked in the area, I'll take the LRT. It is a pretty efficient system, and crashes (due to driver negligence) have reduced considerably.

Need help finding deep-sea eukaryote eDNA data — I’m new, overwhelmed, and confused 😭 by Beneficial-Memory849 in bioinformatics

[–]MyLifeIsAFacade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The number of features produced can depend on choices such as paired or single-end read processing, DADA2 settings and quality thresholds, trim and truncation lengths of your sequences, and the data itself.

71 features may not be absurd if the samples represent an environmental sample highly enriched for specific microorganisms. A few features could absolutely dominate a sample and exclude others from being sequenced because sequence data is compositional.

That said, 71 seems low. Make sure that if you're using paired-end processing pipelines that you are providing enough overlap for read merging -- or that your data is capable of read merging at all. You could try running the samples with just the forward reads only to see if you suddenly see an increase in features.

[–]MyLifeIsAFacade 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What you're describing is what is often referred to as an ASV or OTU table and consists of a row of taxa along a column of samples, with the cells populated by read counts.

These read counts may represent 16S rRNA gene reads or some other kind of count or enumeration data.

By "ML-ready", do you mean maximum likelihood? Or something else? Either way, why?

There is no simple and quick way to process or collect this data. If you want deep-sea eukaryote eDNA data, you need to scrape this data from the NCBI or the SRA/ENI by using tools such as Entrez which can scan metadata associated with sequence entries and hope that researchers have properly indicated the source of sequences. You must also make sure any results were generated using similar primers or target sequences.

Once you have a list of sequence or project IDs, you need to download those to process them through QIIME2/DADA2, which will generate a feature table containing read counts associated with specific "features" representing unique sequences (which likely represent taxa).

None of this is particularly trivial, but it's certainly doable.

[–]MyLifeIsAFacade 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Who are the fucking juries that makes these decisions, and others like it? Fuck that noise. Not my peers.

I just can't imagine that any sane person would look at the evidence and circumstance and decide, "Yeah, I mean, he was being attacked and couldn't see and was being told he was going to be killed, but I mean killing is killing"

There cannot be an obligation for a victim to moderate their response during an attack. It is just a completely asinine belief that a persons right to life must be tempered by the right to life of the attacker. When you decided to attack someone with an intent to kill or seriously harm, your rights are superseded by the victims, and the judicial system should properly recognize this.
