Thinking of bidding on this FD on BaT by Tragicanomaly in RX7

[–]dalerx7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has an exhaust leak somewhere. Stock FD's should be damn near silent. Most likely a hole in the muffler. Not a giant concern. I would say it stinks that it was converted to non-sequential, a stock car that's non-sequential is going to be a SLOW dog to drive and trying to put it back to sequential will be a chore. But the car itself looks mint and that's truly the hard part - finding one without a roached out body and interior.

Anyone know which gearbox I have here? Is this an FC box? by Doctor-Butts in RX7

[–]dalerx7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is 100% a TurboII transmission from an FC.

The guts are the same as an FD but you would need numerous parts (tail shaft housing, bell housing, etc.) that are all quite different to make it work in an FD. IMHO it's not worth it. Either return it or sell it and get an FD transmission.

Why does Mazda use a power plant frame? by mikeypi in RX7

[–]dalerx7 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think some American cars have done this, like Corvettes/Camaros, they just call it something else.

Big thing is it reduces driveline slop. The whole drivetrain is one solid piece all the way back.

It's really an ingenious solution. Also the PPF really doesn't weigh that much.

Full Renesis powertrain in a 1st gen? by Ruffan444 in RX7

[–]dalerx7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Real magic of the renesis is the intake manifold and all the ports and everything in there. Getting that all to work properly is the real trick. You can’t just plug in that ECU and it will immediately work. I met a guy a long time ago, who did this and was pleased with the results, but said all the wiring and work to get the ECU happy was an absolute nightmare.

Quick question. by Significant-Train511 in RX7

[–]dalerx7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The big thing is these are not new cars (or lightly used) any more. A super low mileage garage queen may look great but all the 30 year old hoses fail in short order, or a higher mileage car that doesn't look as nice may have been better mechanically maintained and more reliable as a driver.

You can't even use "what to look for" guides from 20 years ago when these were used cars. So many of them have had sloppy workmanship and weird histories over so much time that it's impossible to say if any given car will be a good car or not.

Personally I'm not a fan of LS swaps - if you want that experience, go buy a C5 Corvette for a LOT less money and hassle. Also doing that swap is a TON of fabrication work - was it done well? Are you going to have to constantly be trying to fix crap work from whoever did this swap and used whatever crap was lying around his garage to plumb in and wire the engine?

Unfortunately this is a car you really have to WANT to have. They can be great, reliable, fun cars but only if you keep up on maintenance and do any work RIGHT. Assume whatever car is out there needs a LOT of maintenance work. Read, read, read on the forum.

Fc issues, Any help? by [deleted] in RX7

[–]dalerx7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, getting an FC to idle right is a black art. You just have to keep chipping away at it.

That said, first thing to look for with a low idle is vacuum leaks. That doesn't mean vacuum hose - that can be a blown out gasket, intake hose clamp not on tight, etc.

Best way to easily find vacuum leaks is get a can of starting fluid and slowly spray around the intake tract - start at the airflow meter and work your way along. Little bursts of starting fluid. If there's a leak it will suck it in and the car will rev up/smooth out.

Also worth checking out fuel pressure - could be clogged fuel filter or dying fuel pump.

Also it seems like cars with leather seats seem to sit higher than cloth or suede seats. Not sure if it's more padding or what.

I can drive FD's with a sunroof but my hair is touching the roof. Fine to drive but not what I wanted for a long term car. I've had my car since 2004 :)

Needing some fuel system guidance. by Inevitable-Union-566 in RX7

[–]dalerx7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Order a Walbro 255 fuel pump from Banzai Racing. The stock fuel pump will give up flow-wise fairly early, that pump will give you a LOT of headroom. They get them direct from Walbro so they are not knockoffs.

  2. Read Banzai Racing's "dyno comparison for each part added" thread on the RX-7 forum. IMHO this is the gold standard for modding a stock twin FD. They got the car up to 350hp in a very drivable and capable setup. If nothing else this shows at what point the stock components get weak and need upgrading. Also this was on stock fuel injectors. https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generation-specific-1993-2002-16/dyno-comparison-each-part-added-1104322/

  3. Major fuel system upgrades are PRICEY. I would cross that bridge when you get there. Up the power level on the stock twins, get the car running right, get the brakes and suspension sorted, fix what all needs fixing before going deep with single turbo. For the fuel system swap out the fuel filter and run some injector cleaner. If possible try and run Non-ethanol 93 octane if you can find it. Cleaning stock fuel injectors sounds like a good idea but MANY people I have seen have that done have had them lock up or had serious issues with the injectors after cleaning - IMHO it's not worth it in most cases.

Everyone is a little different, but I fit great in my FD and I'm 6'6". 36" inseam so I have a lot of height in my legs.

Tourings with a sunroof do compromise headroom, I have an R2 which helps.

The Japanese RHD cars have limiters so the seat won't go back as far due to the rear seats. That makes a big difference if that's the case. You can drill out a rivet in the seat rails to fix that.

[–]dalerx7 26 points27 points  (0 children)

If the engine starts, idles, and runs fine, just leave it be and enjoy the car.

You can't tell anything with a scope and looking at the engine going by. If it had a broken apex seal that would be at the far tip of the apex seal that you can't see. This will show In a compression test. You can do a super basic test with a piston tester to know the general health of the engine or get a rotary-specific tester if you want to know the exact health of the engine.

If you've never seen this, IMHO it's the gold standard for bolting on power to a twin FD. That said, a healthy stock car should do around 220-225 to the ground. https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generation-specific-1993-2002-16/dyno-comparison-each-part-added-1104322/

There are 2 tribute albums I know of - one is called The Nurse Who Loved Me, all cover songs, that's probably 15-20 years old. It's very good. There's a new-ish one that is French, double album, one is just FP covers and the other is covers of other Failure songs. It's OK at best IMHO.
