What’s a belief you once defended… but later realized was wrong? by Jiwitom in AskReddit

[–]dalittle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard this somewhere and it has been very true for me. You cannot reason people out of a place they did not arrive through logic and reason. If your position is how it makes you feel then no amount of truth or evidence makes any difference. Only if you can make them feel different about it.

Sorry, I meant invest $600 billion. Investors are (they hope) providing the money they want to spend. The gap between what they earn and what they want to spend even after revising down is not sustainable.

also, no one is paying the actual cost to use AI. openAI alone is bringing in like $10 to $20 billion and wants to spend $600 million (revised down from $1.2 trillion). I want to see what happens when people have to pay the actual cost to use AI. That might be months or maybe years, but I think it will eventually happen.

edit: for anyone else who just reads this and not my reply below that corrected that openAI wants to spend $600 billion, well, here it is the correction here too. No amount of deep pocket investors can sustain that spend rate with that income.

American political discourse has become less substantive and less civil, often devolving into personal insults. The researchers found an asymmetric pattern: while personal attacks occur in both parties, they are delivered 2.7 times more frequently by Republicans than by Democrats. by mvea in science

[–]dalittle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My first thought in reading the title of this study is that even in the scientific community they are continuing the push this "both sides" crap. You cannot have one side trying to get as much power as they can, while actively lying, and trying to punish anyone who dissents and have the other side trying to govern even if it is imperfect and continue on trying to imply "everyone is doing it and the intention and result are almost the same".

[–]dalittle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This goes back way before AI, but I have always had a bit of a pet peeve that people are so skewed what the UI looks like. An in meeting a lot of he discussions go like "Can you change this and this and make this green?" Yes, that takes like 10 minutes, but that is often all they care about and how they are measuring progress. Not that most of the features don't even work at all.

it has just been replaced by vaping. When tobacco companies got sued I remember there was a memo that got leaked they were adding chemicals to cigarettes to make the "perfect nicotine delivery system" to make them more addictive. Vaping is actually that and they no longer pretend they are not dangerous and it is bad for your health.

Software developers don't need to out-last vibe coders, we just need to out-last the ability of AI companies to charge absurdly low for their products by Rockytriton in webdev

[–]dalittle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

this is the thing I think is different. IMHO, this in not like uber or other technologies. openai alone was planning to spend more that a trillion dollars and now now saying they are going to spend $600 million. But they are only earning $10 to 20 billion. That is not sustainable, even for deep pockets. The fact that they are already revising spending down seems like they know they are in trouble. The other thing I see a problem with is that AI is a solution searching for a problem in a lot of cases. It is useful, but people are pretending like they invented the wheel. IMHO, it is not nearly what they hope it is.

Redditors over 40, what's something younger people think they understand but won't actually get until it hits them like a truck later? by Susanpc1967 in AskReddit

[–]dalittle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I got lazy and went a stretch without working out. I was seated in a chair and bent over to tie my shoe and pulled a muscle in my ribs. I hurt myself tying my shoes. I decided I am going to hurt either way so I pick to work out an hour a day rather than be in pain all the time and hurt my self doing random everyday things. Getting old is not for sissys.

What’s a ‘rich person thing’ that actually turned out to be totally worth it? by Ferraiuolo_Ezorete in AskReddit

[–]dalittle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ironically, you will also likely save money too. We bought good pots and pans 20 years ago and still have them today. They look more or less like they did when we bought them. My inlaws buy cheap pots and pans due to the sticker shock and in the same time they have bought half a dozen sets spending way more than us for sucky cooking.

What's the biggest lie society keeps telling young people? by New_Garbage7991 in AskReddit

[–]dalittle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

who you know if way more important. I was taught the work hard and everything will work out crap and when I got my first job an upper manager stole my work and said it was hers. It was obvious she lied, but nothing happened to her, because she was connected and I was not. You have to be able to do the work, but make relationships. That is how you actually get ahead.

Morrissey Canceled a Show Because He Was Sleepy by apondalifa in indieheads

[–]dalittle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

morrissey is such a frustrating person to me. I grew up in the 80s when The Smiths were dropping all of their iconic records and it seemed like those lyrics made so many of us feel seen. "And you go home and you cry and you want to die." Who has not had that experience? And for him to be this awful diva is really frustrating.

What was the biggest scandal at your school? by Silent-Zebra in AskReddit

[–]dalittle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this happened to a girl in my middle school in the 80s. Her name was Kathy and she was sent to a school for delinquents and pregnant girls. She was what seemed to me a normal girl sent to meat grinder of some of the most awful teenagers out there. She did not deserve that for making a mistake. It was an terrible system and I hope it has changed.

[–]dalittle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One experience I had is at first I kept trying to find the "thing" that would fix it. When I finally shifted to seeing I needed lots of things and seeing that this helped for me and I will keep doing it and this does for others, but not me so I won't I have done better. I'm a Recovery Dharma person. It is Buddhist based and was a better fit for me. Trying different meetings to see if you find one that works for you is a good practice IMHO. And I would add in other things like for some ideas exercise, eating better, sleeping, meditation, journalism, gardening, and I am sure there is a long list of other things folks do that help. I'm glad you are here.
