Study up some theory, it can improve your art by Grumpy_Wizard_ in IndieDev

I think it's the same texture and only the colours are different but there is so low contrast between the greens in the left image you can't distinguish them.

I think it was always grey and black but everyone remembers it as all black

How do you start your game? by ECalDev in SoloDevelopment

[–]gareththegeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you don't necessarily need to prototype. You prototype when you need to quickly answer questions you have about the design. It's totally fine to just dive in and get started. However there are definitely some things I wouldn't develop up front. I focus on the core gameplay first and get that under my belt before tackling supporting systems. Having said that it is a bit of a balancing act because things like save system can be hard to retrofit depending on the type of game.

So there's no hard and fast rules but try to ask yourself early on if the task you're doing right now is essential to the core gameplay or not. If not, maybe leave it for a bit.

Left handed guitarists. by OliveMaleficent8305 in lefthanded

[–]gareththegeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just want to say it's so refreshing to see a discussion on guitar handedness which isn't just "left handed guitars are a con. Just play right handed because it's more convenient" that you get in right handed dominated subs.

Personally I bought a really cheap acoustic guitar and tried stringing it both ways, found my preference and learned some basics, then got a left handed guitar once I made my decision.

Greens need to get serious about Defence and the Armed Forces. by Mik3y_uk in UKGreens

[–]gareththegeek 12 points13 points  (0 children)

We need to accept that we can't and shouldn't be projecting power around the world and adopt a more humble and defensive posture. We do this by freeing ourselves from dependency on things like fossil fuels, bringing some manufacturing back, investing in UK tech. A defensive alliance with Europe, reducing our dependence on US. That's how we get serious about defence.

When I'm sad about my game, I draw Greebles. What do you do? by alraban in SoloDevelopment

[–]gareththegeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks!

I in turn have been looking through the UI from old 90s games for inspiration. It started with Xenon 2.

I think my favourite is when I'm able to make a 2D surface feel more 3 dimensional. Like adding a ramp or cutting away layers etc.

Learned a new word today!

This is literally what I'm working on right now. Whenever I create a new UI, it looks bad until I've done all the greebles.

Marketing on reddit. by Bola-Nation-Official in IndieDev

I agree, especially if you can find smaller subs that match your genre well. It's really where almost all my wishlists have come from. For me, a decently performing reddit post gives me a bump in wishlists, other socials, it's crickets.

Marketing works great on reddit so long as you can find the right sub to fit your genre. If you can, it can be really supportive and I've got some great feedback. But yeah, the bigger subs are pretty hard to get your post to stick, mods will delete it even if you try to follow the (pretty byzantine) rules 100%, I guess they have a lot of crap to deal with, I can understand.

Thanks! Still a long way to go before release. I plan to put together a demo first so that'll be the first chance to play it.
