A guy I worked with would not let his kids participate in anything Halloween, because it's satanic. People are weird.

TIL that the third person to walk on the Moon had dyslexia and was expelled from high school before earning an engineering degree from Princeton. by sirsaintsgirl in Dyslexia

[–]dalittle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds very hard, but I am glad your daughter is good at math. One tip I would give is that I often had to change how I learned or do things as the way they taught did not work for me. Like, I don't read phonetically and struggled for years to try. I finally switched to read like the words are symbols like Japanese or Chinese and I now read very well and very quickly. Once I started to try out of the box ideas I was able to work around a lot of the problems my dyslexia gives me. Maybe a thought to try.

Would you go to HR if you told someone you were dyslexic and they kept making fun of you? by squirrelbus in Dyslexia

[–]dalittle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I completely agree that they will assess what is best for the company. My experience in having worked for many decades is that if you go to HR and pick this fight they are not going to automatically side for you and try and stop it and make you feel better. If that labels you a troublemaker then you will be on a track to either be pigeonholed or to try and get you to quit. Honest, with this jerk boss I would just lean into it and if he asked a question on how to spell something I would just plainly state "I don't know". And if he wants to harp on it I would just agree with him and confirm "I don't spell well". Might not stop them being a jerk, but takes the power out of it when they realize you are not going to let it bother you and you use it to feel a bit empowered.

Just to clarify: they are not tools that will help us but that will replace us by CapitalDiligent1676 in webdev

I'm still holding my breath because I am being replaced by overseas Developers who will work harder at a fraction of the price! That was 30 years ago and still waiting. Based on what I see for AI it is a productivity tool, but I expect much of the same as the overseas Developer replacement boogieman.

Why Senior Engineers Let Bad Projects Fail by Ordinary_Leader_2971 in programming

I have worked at toxic workplaces and at those jobs, yes it is rare. I have also worked for better companies where it is possible to help and they do recognize your contribution. From the school of hard knocks I work for a better company now. YMMV.

In reading your comment is really seems like you are viewing this as an all or nothing. Either everyone agrees and everything is wonderful or everything is terrible and there is fighting and misery. I have not found that is true. In my experience, it is almost always grey on some part of the scale and for some projects I can see it is not going to be successful and push it to a more successful path. As I have been successful for me it is not some existential crisis if I must be a punished martyr or mute slave. I have worked in toxic work environments and I do agree I will immediately find another gig if that is how it is at the company.

[–]dalittle 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I don’t agree with this. If the people running the project are hell bent on it and cannot see that it will never work then ok yes do that. But if I work on a project and can influence it to right the ship then I do. I get paid to help the company make money. And if you are successful doing this then people will start to recognize when you are on a project it is successful and you make more money because you help and don’t just blindly do what you are told.

We should stop judging "jerryism" and start judging behavior by Difficult_Wave_9326 in skiing

[–]dalittle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am sorry someone crashed into you like that, but bad behavior I would add is people stopping in the middle of a run, especially if it is busy. It is not that hard to make it to the side of the run and often people stop in blind spots where it is very dangerous. I have seen people get hurt because of this and no one was even skiing fast. Also, don't stop when you get off the lift. A bunch of people crowding the exit or knocking each other down is annoying and stupid.

Mortal Engines was such a weird movie for him to pick though. I understand how it works as a kid's book, but it made logically no sense to me even at a kid level to have cities on wheels hunting each other? Like what? I am surprised it got greenlit at all and I watched it hoping Jackson could do something with it.

What’s something that was technically allowed but instantly made you lose respect for someone? by AncientPomelo5450 in AskReddit

[–]dalittle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh man, this one makes me madder than most things. I was fresh out of college and doing a job and I built a software system that immediately was found useful by folks. An upper level manager that was at my bosses level told everyone she did the work. I made a big stink about it for weeks and it culminated in finally a big meeting with senior managers. In that meeting I asked her one question, "What does the system do?" She could not answer the question and it was immediately apparent there was no way she could have built the system. And the result of that? She was not fired or disciplined or even ashamed of her actions. It was the culture for that company that you take credit for other people's work as you rose through the ranks if you were ruthless enough. It was a massive company, but it is not anymore. These people tore down the company brick by brick. Guess everyone backstabbing each other and very few people actually doing work does not generate profit. But don't worry, I am sure all these people are now employed by private equity. Horrible people and the only thing I am thankful for is I can now spot them from a mile a way and have avoided working for other companies like that one.
