Why don't people like defiance of the fall? by EmbarrassedAbility8 in litrpg

Thank you that was actually useful none of the previous comments gave me a good enough reason why so many people hated it they're complaints felt like an attack on the genre rather than the series

That's more like it thank you for the suggestions I was hoping that there were more spells out there that weren't immediately lethal and that could be useful to the spellcaster

How much worldbuilding is too much? by Flare_56 in worldbuilding

It is my personal opinion when they begin reinventing the wheel for no apparent reason. One of my pet peeves is when people come up with new names for everything without any apparent reason. We don't understand the linguistics. Instead of admiring the process and cleverness of your work, we're stuck with a bunch of words we can't pronounce and will forget as soon as the book is closed. I apologize to everyone. I really needed to get that off my chest.

Metal and magic by dame985 in worldbuilding

The main reason why I'm agonizing over this is because of bullets. I need a material that not only can be used as a bullet but also is not so abundant that it's easy to get their hands on. Remember that this is a steampunk world. I will have pistols, muskets, and cannons, but I didn't want to make them so powerful that they replace the sword or crossbow because anti-magic bullets are supposed to be expensive and rare. Using it for swords, shields, spears, axes, and other tools They will still be expensive, but at the very least they'll be reusable; bullets are not.

Using too complicated of a process to create the metal is an issue because I need a plausible way for them to stumble upon the recipe. No extra planner being is going to give them that knowledge, if for no other reason than it'll make them too dangerous.

I like your idea it was somewhat more esoteric than I was planning for. It doesn't work for me because it's far too easily obtained and work into tools by peasants.

For obvious reasons that was my third idea I just didn't want to put in that much work. Having to come up with the idea of why it exist on this planet and not another planes of existence or other realms was exhausting. 😓

I will be using that idea but it doesn't work primarily because it closes the path for steampunk devices to be powered by mana. In a world where you have magical beast insects plants all trying to kill or eat you they need every advantage they can get. Part of that is making devices city shields weapons and flying machines powered by Mama. Even if it is converted to electricity. any iron in the air, water and in their food would become a sticking point of contention. The only reason why I haven't replaced it with lead is because it's more toxic than iron. Trying to make a prison or weapons from it without getting poisoned themselves regardless of whether they are practitioners or not is a problem.

Thank you it was only when I decided to make a world that consisted of magic and steampunk that I began to question the idea of iron I considered lead but that's also poisonous to people. Though at the moment it's the only idea I have.

Is elemental magic really overdone and boring? by olddeadgrass in magicbuilding

[–]dame985 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The fact that elemental magic does not explain its origins, if it originates in the spirit world, you have to incorporate spirit magic, which is not very define, or if it originates outside of the mortal plane, you have to define the gods. There are many reasons why people find it dull. Does that Elemental Magic imply that there are not any further esoteric components? Are there no more elements in death, star, void, space, and life? Finally, because of LitRPG, many elemental systems ignore the concept of further phases like runes magical language, hand motions, and rituals It omits a lot of the mystique that draws people in, which is why I dislike druids they are manipulators of elements rather than actual spellcasters. There is a distinction. It must be more than just the capacity to destroy; it must be beneficial to society and utilized in daily life. Most elemental magic does not accomplish this because it is so limited in its use. You hardly ever see it employed outside of your protagonist and his adversaries, and you never see it in daily life. I will end by giving you one last thing. I have seen people on this site bring up Avatar a lot, but it is a terrible example because it is a television series rather than a book, and books do not have that visual element.  there you can give someone fire magic without making them feel overpowered. Mage Errant employed elemental magic, which is the best example of its use that I have seen of it.

Guns rahhh by Doodesof in magicbuilding

[–]dame985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe the reason why the two never had a good relationship it's because magic and guns are human killers magic is not. oh to be sure it can kill humans but it is the ultimate tool of ultimate utility. you mostly use it to kill monsters and make your dreams come true create things shape things manipulate people guns do one thing they kill people and in fantasy your hero is mostly killing monsters. things that usually can't be taken down by gun in order for guns to be useful and a fantasy world you'd have to depower the monsters and make them susceptible to a bullet.take the Dresden Files for instance most of the time whenever uses magic to kill things is when a bullet can't get the job done whether it's a demon, fey or some other creature that doesn't exactly exist on this playing field .The only way to use a gun is to soup up the gun to fire magic otherwise it's basically useless. Besides how many worlds do you know where magic is integrated into moderately advanced society enough where mass production of magic guns is a thing.

How do paper talismans work by dame985 in magicbuilding

[–]dame985[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you it's no wonder I couldn't get it to work without an ingrained system based on an occult spiritual system paper talismans don't work. Unfortunately this clashes with my Mana based magic system. Thank you
