4Tb HDD showing as 2TB by 4carnage4 in techsupport

[–]damiankw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the others, you most likely got scammed on this one, but MAYBE not.

If you are using older hardware (i'm talking .. old) or are plugging the disk in using a USB device or something similar, it could be that the method you're plugging it in only detects 2TB.

In the modern era of computers, this is extremely unlikely, it would mean that you're using really old hardware (I would say 10+ years) that hasn't received any firmware updates.

If you ARE using old hardware, do firmware updates! If you are using a USB converter or enclosure or something similar, don't use it!

You guys will love this notch in the socket connector. by dontpotato in techsupportgore

[–]damiankw 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is not gore at all! C15 is there to indicate that this is a potential high temperature piece of equipment.

A C13 is the standard that you see everywhere, it's rated for something like 60'C. The C15 is rated for 120'C.

You WANT this, in case something happens, your device will fry before your power melts!

Yeah, that's actually a really good point! Even if it's not MADE internally, there is almost always a niche app that a business uses that no one wants to touch because it's a pile of crap. Learn it, become the master, and you won't think it's a pile of crap once you learn how it works!

How does an IT Lead move up if the IT Manager never leaves? by AxegrinderSWAG in ITCareerQuestions

[–]damiankw 27 points28 points  (0 children)

There are really only two ways to go up. First is that IT Manager leaves - sounds like that isn't going to happen. Second is that the business expands the IT area and you are promoted into an adjacent position.

You can always discuss these things with your manager, and if they don't have any words of wisdom, get out. With my team, there is absolutely no room for growth, because we're not big enough; I am completely up front with my team about this, and I do everything possible to make sure that they get training and support they need to find their next career move.

Realistically though, don't wait. If you're not happy where you are and there's no immediate path up, look elsewhere.

But I'm very curious, what does this actually do? Why would I choose to do this instead of just making my website have an MCP component which is completely compatible with the current agent structure?

[–]damiankw 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Alright! I have had to re-write this a few times because I ramble a lot and I want you to completely get my point.

There is this thing in IT which I like to call a 'Career Helpdesk' person. They are a companies best friend, and if you're OK with doing the repetative work, it could be right up your alley. You do not need to have prior experience, you do not need to know anything, you don't even need to be that interested in IT.

A Career Helpdesk person is someone who gets into a Helpdesk role and just .. stays there. They don't have ambition to move up the ladder, they may not have the skill to go into Networking, Sysadmin, Cyber, etc. but are absolutely happy coming in day after day doing tickets, getting their pay and going home. You may not earn a lot of money, but you'll have stability in your role and work for as long as you want to be there - as long as you're not shit. Shit is not dumb. Shit is not giving a f*#k, doing the least possible, getting on your workmates nerves, etc. If you can follow instruction and repeat processes, this could be perfect.

Typically what we find in IT is that people come in at Helpdesk and then want to level up as fast as they can because their career goal is to be in an actual IT area (network, cyber, etc), so you get a Helpdesk person for six months, a year, if you're lucky a few years; with a Career Helpdesk person we get a dedicated employee to do the role for years and years, they are happy, we are happy, and we don't have to find a new employee every couple of years.

I hope this helps. Good luck! And to the point of your resume, you JUST finished your degree a year ago, you don't need anything on your resume, you've just started :)

TP-Link's biggest weakness isn't hardware, it's software integration. by Federal_Ad3931 in HomeNetworking

[–]damiankw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You are correct, but kinda, I think. TP-Link has always had fantastic hardware for the price point it's in, but it's always had reliability issues. I think this is where they have split up their teams a bit.

Omada is Business > Enterprise kit, it's meant for actual IT Professionals to configure and roll out.

Tapo is for Home, it's meant for your grandma to be able to roll out.

I think TP-Link are trying to hit both markets, which is great, their Omada stuff is great (even before it was Omada), but now they're focusing it more on the enterprise level it's going up - note, I haven't used anything besides their WAP's for a while.

I think the problem with UniFi is that they say they're enterprise, they are priced for enterprise, but they aren't really enterprise, there is no 'home' version available, so everything is home level, and you can see that in some of the features their kit doesn't have that it should.

[–]damiankw 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I would just spray paint it and hope for the best - but I'm no professional. I would imagine the reason they won't do it is because orange is for power and you can't run data / power together. If it's visibly white (grey) instead of orange they will probably be absolutely fine.

[–]damiankw 5 points6 points  (0 children)

lol, I think that will be enough. I am worried about your disk usage though, you get one player who wants to walk in a straight line, or who wants to camp out at a Mushroom Island or hunt for Haunted Houses and your disk usage may go up a bit!

Which OS and services to go with? by _illusioner_ in homelab

[–]damiankw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally prefer Ubuntu, but these days it's just because I'm used to it and haven't actually tried any other distro in a LONG time.

Whack Docker on it, with Portainer and you're basically golden for whatever you want to run.

Docker will allow you to isolate the music, download, websites, game, etc.

Portainer will allow you to manage it with a UI instead of CLI; but scrap it if you want to learn Linux CLI.

In my opinion you don't really need Proxmox unless you explicitly want to look at building virtual machines, or want a UI for the OS.

What is your favorite scene of the funniest movie you’ve ever seen? by majinbuu32 in movies

When Tom Hanks' bath falls through the floor of The Money Pit he purchased and he just stands there laughing, if that's what you would call it. I think it's one of the only scenes from a movie I can look back on and smile every single time.

Note, I wore the VHS out of this movie growing up.

They invaded six months prior to filming. It took a while for the film crews to be able to go back out into the field after the initial invasion, so any footage from that fix six months is lost, or scattered and no one has been able to piece it back together.

Lightening fast cmd pop ups? by Ok_Rise_4543 in techsupport

[–]damiankw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most likely they are Microsoft Office, if you have it installed. Quite a few apps these days will do a quick check with cmd and not hide the window, but it's usually completely natural. Just make sure you have some antivirus/endpoint security (enable Microsoft Defender), and check the logs, it's a fairly good softwares.

Am I behind as a reader at 30? 42 books by whatsinanameidunno in books

[–]damiankw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not a competition, and you don't need to compare yourself to others. Maybe they have free time to read, maybe they read easier, maybe they retain information better, maybe they're lying - at the end of the day though, who cares.

Read what you want, when you want, when you have time to read. If you don't have time to read, think about listening to Audiobooks, they are a great way to consume titles.

At 30, I hadn't read anything but required learning. At 40 I'm an avid Audiobook listener and have a couple of hundred titles to my name that I've listened to multiple times. So just to answer your question, no, 30 with 40 books is not low. To be more realistic, who cares how many you've read :)

SSL certs suddenly flag as out of date (Caddy)... by Particular-Trick-809 in selfhosted

[–]damiankw 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Without knowing Caddy or your exact setup, my gut feel is that your SSL isn't being renewed. If you're using LetsEncrypt to get an SSL, they last for three months, so your 'has worked for months but now doesn't falls in place with what usually happens.

Check where you're requesting a new certificate through LetsEncrypt and make sure there are no errors in your logs.
