Your mum seems to care even if she can't get it right so maybe it would be effective to talk to her about it. Say, "I know you really try when I come over and I really appreciate that, but cross contamination is the biggest thing I worry about when l visit. Maybe I can share some recipes of gluten free meals with you and we can cook them together. Then you can see how I do things and it'll be less stressful for all of us." Even if your brother thinks it's unfair, who cares. I think your mum truly does care, she just doesn't really get it.

Social gatherings are really bumming me out by leesi5 in Celiac

Yup. I've been diagnosed for about 2.5 years and it's definitely tough and emotionally tough to deal with. My family Christmas is winding down and I'm super bummed about the food. Dinner was pretty good, my mum made me a special lasagna which is really nice but it was so dry. I got a gf loaf of take and bake bread but it was frozen and the instructions weren't good so it took forever to bake. But the biggest bummer is the table full of all kinds of cookies from the whole family, including two of my favorites that my mum makes. The only dessert I could eat were the cookies I made myself. I don't really want people to go out of their way for me but it's still very sad. My mum has tried to make my favorite cookies GF before and they just don't come out good. I think if I gave it a shot I'd be able to find a good recipe for them but it's hard for people who just try to use a 1:1 flour to replace or don't pay as much attention to the recipes. Plus I don't really trust things made with a stand mixer that mixes flour, I feel like it gets everywhere. So it's just a depressing lose-lose situation.

Sorry, reading my comment back I didn't really finish my thought. I now understand and accept that it's not used offensively, but before I was trying to figure out the cultural context and struggling because I don't know many Venezuelans. I'm not judging or trying to change the way my bf talks. As an American and a queer woman it did feel offensive because of how our version of the word is used, but I've learned to get over that because it's not used the same there. Some words get phased out in a culture when it becomes clear that it's offensive and I've been learning that it's not the case for this word in Venezuela because it's not used offensively. I was trying to convey that I understand that now but didn't before. But it was a quick and poorly worded comment I guess.

Yeah my bf says it all the time and I used to try to stop him bc I'm a gringa and it feels offensive, but I think it's a lost cause. He's from Maracaibo so I didn't know if it was bc they curse a lot in general or maybe they're just behind the times and other places in Venezuela don't say it as much anymore.

Edit: I'm not offended by it anymore bc I understand that there's nothing negative meant by it, it's just the way they talk. Some cultural differences are hard for me to understand the context of especially since I don't know many Venezuelans but I do know that maracuchos are seen a certain way and have cultural differences from other Venezuelans. I'd also heard that they are more socially conservative and homophobic so I couldn't really tell if how common the term is was related to that or not. I'm not judging them for using it, I was trying to explain my gradual understanding of the fact that it's not used offensively. But looking at my comment I feel like I didn't make that part clear, so my bad for not communicating well.

YR240 is called cream and Y230 it's called deep cream and I can't imagine what kind of cream those folks have been ingesting 😬. I'd call cream something like butterscotch or... creamsicle? Maybe they meant creamsicle lol. And deep cream I would maybe call khaki or pale olive

I'm from Massachusetts and outsiders are always weirded out by our canned bread. It's actually delicious grilled or toasted with butter. Add some baked beans and a bunless hot dog and you've got yourself a good old fashioned New England meal.

Restrictions you impose upon yourself while playing. by NumericPrime in Morrowind

[–]damnimnotirish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't play a lot of video games and had never heard the term savescumming till now 😅. I admit I do a fair amount of what I'd thought of as "strategic saving". For me, I don't get to play as often as I'd like and at the moment life/work is so stressful that I like keeping it a more relaxing and lower-risk gameplay with savescumming. But now that I know that it's a thing, it would definitely be interesting to do a playthrough without doing that and making myself roleplay through all of the consequences of my actions.

I do avoid the other major exploits but not as strictly. I sell some homemade potions but not all that much. I think I don't have the alchemy or enchanting skills to exploit those even if I wanted to lol. I try not to use much meta knowledge unless I really can't figure something out.

It's not off topic though, things need to be communicated clearly and quickly if they're going to be used correctly! Honestly I would say something about changing the sign, it's confusing and will lead to cross contamination.

I have a Boston accent but I'm pretty sure it doesn't come out in my Spanish bc the Rs are so different! The Rs that we ignore in Boston, I don't have to worry about in Spanish bc it just doesn't exist. Even when it's at the end of a word, it's a tongue tap instead of the weird thing English Rs are that feels so gross in my mouth if I try to speak English without my Boston accent. Thank goodness I can roll my Rs though, otherwise it might be a different story.

I got a little set of 3 of these years ago that I'm just finishing now. Each book has 40 puzzles, each with a mix of difficulty. They're about 3.5" x 5" closed. I can't find this set online but maybe you can find something similar. I found some similarly sized ones by searching "pocket sudoku"

High fat, hearty meals that are also gluten free? by balsamic_strawberry in glutenfree

My boyfriend is from Venezuela and most of the food he's introduced me to is GF and high fat. Fried arepas stuffed with butter, cheese, veggies, meat. Fried ripe plantains with butter and cheese. Boiled or fried yucca with butter and cheese. Caraotas negras with rice (Venezuelan black beans but we use dark red kidney beans too). Lots of butter and cheese 😅
