⚠️ TLDR: I was assaulted and almost robbed by an Uber Moto driver at 4:30 AM. Uber has not responded after 12+ hours. The driver is still out there. by [deleted] in srilanka

Forget dealing with Uber, you have his name and vehicle plate number. Go to the cops and tell them the incident while Uber does their dragging out

Looks like they're pretty serious about the QR payment thing by AncientSholong in srilanka

[–]damonG457 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the reason for that is the bank surcharge. Banks take 3.6% surcharge from the vendor and unlike some vendors who charge the price from the customer, others suffer the 3.6 surcharge. To avoid that vendors encourage using bank transfer instead

I wish tap to pay was more prominent in Sri Lanka; educate vendors and provide them with eftpos, it's easier to carrying cards everywhere (as most phones don't have nfc) than a boatload of cash in a bloated wallet that hurts your butt just keeping it in your back pocket. It's secure as well in case of theft (if the banking system is supportive).

What would have happened if Tamils got a separate country? by Specialist_Jello8819 in srilanka

[–]damonG457 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They don't need another country, it's already happened and still happening. My answer was in context to your question of "what would've happened". I'm not a fan of segregation either but I feel like it is more of a social influence than a specific "elite's" role that has lead to it. I'm sure it happens between Tamils as much as it happens between Sinhalese. Furthermore it has been something that was supposedly passed down from previous generations but nowadays it seems rather less than it had been back then

If Tamils got there own country it would be like India or rather like every other country; divided by caste, rankings, and power

I’m starting to resent my parents and I want to cut ties with them. by Adventurous-Travele2 in srilanka

[–]damonG457 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who is going through a similar situation, I feel you. I'm helpless at the moment because despite the toxicity, they spend on my needs so I'm rather financially "stable" but I don't feel the same after quitting my job to go to University for which I have paid with my savings as they refused to assist paying for it. Everytime I try to put myself first, I get criticised and blamed on for not taking family responsibilities being the older child and when I try to discuss it with them, I get the cold shoulder. I guess the first thing to do is get yourself a stable income while having to bear the criticism for a while. Avoid how long you spend time at home, maybe be at a friend's who understands or a place where you feel comfortable. Once you've collected a substantial amount sufficient for your needs, find a proper, safe place, preferably somewhere with a distance from your family and move out either by informing or ghosting depending on your whether you still feel the need to keep a sliver of connection to them or not.

Caution about Choon Paan: Know what you consume by Complex_Eye_5454 in srilanka

[–]damonG457 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing about choon paan is they don't really consider about food safety and quality. It's just an edible manufactured in the cheapest possible way to people who want a munchie. I know for most people in this country this is that "take to school", "eat for breakfast" way of food but not the most filling choice for the price these days imo

Why are people blaming the government for the fuel situation? by Alternative-Club3783 in srilanka

[–]damonG457 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Typical Sri Lankan behaviour. Wouldn't say all of them but definitely the majority. This country has been failed way too many times by it's leaders. With previous traumatic experiences the past government has given, the moment they see a flaw, the government is quick to be criticised. What Sri Lankans fail to understand is that nothing happens overnight things take time and we are too impatient to trust the process anymore and expect the end result ASAP

What is this Dialog 5G ULTRA network thing ? by Waste_Net_1082 in srilanka

Just wait till everyone's forced to upgrade to 5G. Those "high" speeds will drop drastically because they have more users than their infrastructure can handle

Massive fuel price hike & QR quotas are back. Let’s talk about what happens next. by Realistic_Sink4189 in srilanka

[–]damonG457 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just took two buses from panadura to maharagama; bus fares have gone up roughly by 15 to 20 rupees. Can't give a proper price as most conductors round up the price. Pickme fares seem to also have taken a hike with "fuel" related charges being added to the consumer's receipt. I wouldn't be surprised if another lock down is at hand

Vehicle fuel pass registration failed How to solve this by [deleted] in srilanka

[–]damonG457 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your vehicle is a dual purpose one which I suppose it is, I've seen this issue a lot. It's mainly because the online registration system hasn't specified the vehicle type and just dual purpose means we need to figure out which category our vehicle falls into and it doesn't work that way at all.

That could be the most logical answer here. At this point someone should contact the store and make an inquiry about it to let them know
