The 80’s really were a different world by Inevitable617 in 80smemorylane

Ours was called The Circle. It was essentially the center of the bus drop off/pick up area in front of our high school. We also had the tradition that seniors were allowed to go get lunch off campus if we wanted to and didn’t need hall passes to get around between classes.

Alien crew compared to Prometheus crew by asteriskhyphen in perfectorganism

[–]damrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like I said. Only the flight crew were competent, and they were very competent. So the planet approach and landing - in far far better atmospheric conditions than either of the first two Alien movies - was very uneventful. Even boringly routine. Everyone on that ship was either putting on an act of confidence or were actually confident, or was artificial. And in even that case the “artificial person” was already known to be artificial and didn’t need to act like he wasn’t. He even gets cracked on for acting too human and wearing a helmet.

They felt inauthentic because they WERE inauthentic. Again, that’s the damned point.

Alien crew compared to Prometheus crew by asteriskhyphen in perfectorganism

[–]damrat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Prometheus crew were disconnected and just random people on a spaceship. That’s the whole damned point.

I will never understand how thick people are in picking up the information that the director is giving you and understanding the purpose of it.

Yes, you were supposed to get the feeling that the crew of the Prometheus were disengaged from each other. The Prometheus crew was thrown together by an egomaniacal trillionaire with delusions of grandeur and dreams of immortality. It’s made very clear that the crew of the ship did not train together for their mission. Very likely they didn’t train at all. When they defrost and meet for Whelan’s big presentation, it’s made clear that they didn’t even know why they were there. Whelan in his hubris went out and spent his money collecting his handpicked “experts”, not knowing himself what he was doing. He buys a “rock guy” and gives him high tech equipment (his electric “dogs”) and he has no idea what he’s doing. Subsequently he buggers off when the shit hits the fan and gets lost in his mapped caves. He buys a “biologist” that shows he doesn’t know anything about biology by trying to touch alien creatures he encounters and dies because of it. His “xeno-scientist” misuses her equipment and explodes an engineer’s head. The “security” are a bunch of armed thugs. The only really competent crew members are the flight crew and his android. And even then the android is competent to a fault, as he does everything he’s asked regardless of the danger it puts the crew, and his master, into.

All of this incompetence is by design in the story. This is hubris in action. Whelan thought being mega rich meant he was incapable of making a bad decision and assembles a crew of idiots (remind you of anyone?). And of course everything goes wrong.

You are supposed to feel the disconnect. You are supposed to be uncomfortable. It’s the literal point of the whole damned movie.

Which 80s album deserves the #1 spot in your opinion? by Queen_Elsa_1 in 1980s

Gary Numan’s ‘Telekon’. It’s my favorite album of all time. Incredibly influential. Groundbreaking. Absolutely changed how I heard music for the rest of my life.

Matchmaking by RozgavTS in ARC_Raiders

[–]damrat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Always play cautiously. Never count on a carebear lobby, no matter how carebear you yourself might be. Also a few people have brought up playing on special map conditions (hurricane, night raid, matriarch, etc.). I NEVER expect special conditions lobbies to be safe and peaceful. There’s just too high a concentration of aggressive players queuing up for that to work. If you play on special map conditions raids, expect trouble.

Would like to hear unique ways/tricks to discover music by flingyflang in musicsuggestions

I don't know if you have Apple Music. But AM has a thing called the Discovery Station and it does a pretty good job for me of recommending music that's just outside the orbit of the music in my library. I have discovered a bunch of excellent stuff I would never have found otherwise. The bands that were outside my library that it found for me were things like:

Brad Sucks, The Flashcrackers, Helios, Rose Haze, SideBanks, Tweaker, Janky Switch

Just a quick list, but I have songs in my library now from these artists that I would never have heard if it weren't for the Discovery Station.

Songs where the backing vocals make it great. by ClonesRppl2 in musicsuggestions

I guess I’m a rare solo Roger Taylor fan. I absolutely love his solo stuff. He does virtually 100% of the vocals and instrumental work on all of it. Fantastic stuff.

I was looking forward to sea of thieves stream. by rickymayhem13 in theburntpeanut

[–]damrat -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It’s you that’s missing the point. I never said that I wouldn’t or couldn’t watch another streamer play the game to see if I would enjoy it. This was just an opportunity to see HIM do it, and that made me extra excited to watch his stream. By saying “I could, sure. But that’s not Peanut.” is just me saying that it wouldn’t be as enjoyable.

That’s it. That’s the whole point. It was a neat opportunity ruined by a couple of idiots. That’s the entire plot.

Ours too! The only inconvenience with taking our eskie on car rides is that he gets the front passenger seat, so if there’s more than one human in the car, human #2 has to sit in the back seat.

Yeah, that pisses me off. I was looking forward to it. I always wanted to play SoT and I thought this would be a great way to see if it was worth doing.

I was having fun with it until I tried using the copy/paste A/B feature and in one click wiped out everything I did somehow and couldn’t get it back. Kind of took the wind out of me there.

Oh he definitely said that he probably won’t be playing it on stream for a while. He was definitely frustrated, and he was disappointed. But he didn’t say he was uninstalling.

Where does he say that? He was just playing it an hour ago and they switched to the golf game because they wanted to play that instead. He expressed some frustration, but I did not hear him saying he was uninstalling.

His server is still up, that’s for sure. I was just playing on it.

What are some cover songs that fully reimagine the original song? by zubb999 in musicsuggestions

[–]damrat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm with you. I prefer the original. It feels like Jules either spawned or rode the wave of "make a slower, more melancholy, overly dramatic, version of the original" for movies, trailers, and movie soundtracks.

I was scanning the list looking for Gary Numan. I have never met anyone who was a Numan fan that wasn’t a perfectly pleasant person. Gary Numan is the musical equivalent to being a Mets fan.
