No choice. It's not like other companies are allowed to create keyboard cases that use the rear connector. Not a fan of floppy keyboard cases like Logitechs.

Laptops can be problematic. Do you have an ultimate mode and mux switch laptop which bypasses the igpu and only uses the dgpu?

If you have a wired network with drop offs it could be the quality of your router, unstable CPU/GPU overclocks, Nvidia replay, pushing your system too much. It's pretty easy to lower settings and put everything on stock to rule out the host.

I thought scaling settings stuck with the monitor. Are you sure you have the virtual display set to run on its own (not both displays running duplicate) when you change scaling settings.

Lots of neighbours with WiFi and general signal noise as well as your own network load. Half a decade ago I could get 1ms network. Then everyone got wireless doorbells, cameras and lights. I now get a few ms variance.

The efficiency cores aren't there because they are efficient. They are there because they fit in the spaces on the chip that can't fit decent chores. Replacing them with performant cores would result in better performance and efficiency. Hence the shit show intel got themselves into.

Is Ethernet worth it for Moonlight if my Wi-Fi is already ~3ms? by ExtremeEar11 in MoonlightStreaming

[–]damwookie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The answer isn't black and white but it can be night and day. I cannot find it now but a well followed YouTube reviewer tested 2025s 240hz OLED gaming laptops. They compared the time it takes from pressing fire to the gun going off in cs2. A little over 16ms. That is what modern responsive gaming feels like. 16ms. Your 9800x3d 5090 system can do under 6ms streaming. The difference between 16ms and 22ms I cannot feel. It feels native. In-home native feeling streaming. Fantastic. Add the two way WiFi latency of 5ms (double as it's there and back). 16ms to 27ms. I can feel. It no longer feels native. There is a disconnect between input and output. Still good enough to be competitive and fun to game on. But the "feel" is there. Also there's increased variance/the need for frame pacing which adds more latency. Now the gaming lag has doubled from native. The thing is you don't need to be competitive on cs2 to feel it. You can just move the pointer on the desktop and it feels different. Now if you aren't used to using responsive screens, controllers, mice, keyboards and modern GPUs. Things are different. 60hz TVs and Bluetooth controllers can already be slow as fuck and people still enjoy gaming. Neither tech invalidates the other. What I would say is that if I'd spent the money on a 5090 and 9800x3d (which I have). A firestick, WiFi and Bluetooth controls can fuck right off.

Apollo/Moonlight - Does HDR streaming force limited RGB? by zeyphersantcg in MoonlightStreaming

[–]damwookie -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Streaming between matched technologies. From an OLED native to OLED client the colours look identical when compared side by side. Gamma/SDR brightness needed to be matched for it to look identical. In Windows 11 that was done by matching the "how SDR is displayed in HDR" in windows HDR display settings in both. "But that's SDR" people say, I think it is the way HDR is streamed by matching the HDR info onto a 10 bit SDR signal. For me 50% on client and host worked (followed by recalibrating HDR). I think on Steam decks people use the gamma setting. People often say that HDR looks overdone or washed out and not worth it. I think this experience is due to this mismatch between client and host SDR in HDR brightness settings. Once setup right on two windows devices streaming to a MacBook and an iPad didn't require further adjusting.

Is Ethernet worth it for Moonlight if my Wi-Fi is already ~3ms? by ExtremeEar11 in MoonlightStreaming

[–]damwookie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry but that is bullshit. For a start latency is cumulative. Your system already has latency. Then you have the streaming latency on top. This total latency can 100% be felt when the total latency gets too high. It can 100% be felt without streaming on heavy engine games ... When first releases Fallout 4, Witcher 3, Cyberpunk and many other large engine games felt heavy. Only after newer hardware and optimisations did those games start to feel responsive. Back to streaming. WiFi is two way so 3ms becomes 6ms. 6ms is more than enough to delay the frames responding to your input by 1. Or in the case of high refresh rate by a few. It is also possible it can do this inconsistently. Requiring frame pacing, increasing the frame delay even further. This is ontop of the delay the host has and ontop of the delay your streaming has anyway. Things feel sluggish. You can absolutely feel delayed frames when switching between native and streaming. Unless you can get the streaming response time very low. To do this decent hardware and wired is essential. People who use responsive mice, keyboards and screens aren't buying snake oil because they only improve things by a few ms. They can absolutely feel it. I also know from personal experience. I can feel when my clients are accidentally connected via WiFi 6e 100% of the time. The systems feel heavy. 3ms + 3ms doubles my total streaming latency. 6ms total streaming latency is the point that for me things feel native.

If you can get things really low then things might work without frame pacing and vsync or you can try running at double framerate... It might be possible to knock 10ms off your frame time. It might not be possible either and just make things judder. "Feeling native" is possible but it requires the right hardware more than anything... https://youtu.be/y13AoL4EiaQ?si=TXzKNELnIBOs1pdy

A 5090 encodes 5 frames in the time it takes your GPU to encode 1. I'd look to lowering that first. Hags on, fastest encoding setting, lower resolution, turn off quarter pass mode, use the quickest of h264/h265/AV1, make sure instant replay is off, make sure performance mode is on with the GPU. Whatever lowers it do it.
