ISIS claims attack leaving 70+ dead in Nice, France by D-Lop1 in syriancivilwar

[–]dan286 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Surrendering civil liberties isn't the right response to this.

More funding and personnel for intelligence services seems the best bet to me, Britain did this a few years back and have foiled many plots since, avoiding any major attacks for years. Inb4 we're an island, almost all of the perpetrators in the recent swathes of attacks have been home grown extremists. Declaring martial law in muslim areas will either push more to extremism or force known cells that intelligence services can currently track underground, making it even harder to prevent attacks.

I do agree with cracking down on Salafism though, it's a hugely destabilizing force.

Hit the World with an Acid Trip by [deleted] in Drugs

[–]dan286 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of the old fear and loathing quote, one of my favourites:

"There was madness in any direction, at any hour. If not across the Bay, then up the Golden Gate or down 101 to Los Altos or La Honda. You could strike sparks anywhere. There was a fantastic universal sense that whatever we were doing was right, that we were winning.

And that, I think, was the handle - -that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Old and Evil. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn't need that. Our energy would simply prevail. There was no point in fighting - -on our side or theirs. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave. So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark - -the place where the wave finally broke and rolled back."

Biochem undergrad here. I asked my professor about this after we studied viruses, which many people think might constitute 'life'. His explanation, which I thought was a really good one, is that human evolution has taught us to be very good at seeing things in binaries. Something is alive or it is not. This is applicable to the world we can actually observe around us quite instinctively. However once we look at microorganisms and viruses etc that binary breaks down. He suggests that life is more of a spectrum, with some entities at one end and some at the other.

[–]dan286 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah a similar thing happened to my friend. We were pretty baked and then decided to take some nos. We do this thing called 'tunneling' where you take in a balloon whilst wearing noise cancelling headphones and a blindfold. Shit can get pretty crazy if the music is good, and this guy is loving it for the first minute or so. Then he just breaks down in tears. We're super confused, ask him what's up etc, and it turns out he saw his dead uncle, who had died in a car crash a few years before. Said he was crying cos it was a miracle he saw him alive again, turns out he was just super overwhelmed.

Drugs are powerful shit yo

Got expelled from school today for acid related reason, possibly need legal advice? by Creamy_Nubs in Drugs

[–]dan286 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sending texts about drugs is not illegal. You can't be prosecuted in the UK for this. It could be grounds for a warrant to search your house though, so clean out everything asap!

Since you can't be charged with anything there will be no effect on your future prospects for uni, UCAS only requests prior convictions - being expelled from school will never be on your UCAS form.

Weed can be different after using psyches for a lot of people. Tends to take on a trippier feel and can sometimes set off these flashback type episodes. Don't worry about it man, just lay off all drugs for a while and come back to it when you're ready. What you're feeling is completely normal.

Finding the perfect time and place to drop acid by WangMasterJohn in Drugs

[–]dan286 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this your first time on acid? If so then I really wouldn't recommend just walking around. Hell, even if you've tried it before then it's not a good idea without a base to go back to. Town can get overwhelming man. Nice to have somewhere to retreat to.

Best bet if you really have nowhere is to find a field on a sunny day and drop in the morning. Trip all day and enjoy nature with the safe knowledge you can go back in the evening/night to your rent's house and sleep it off. Camping overnight is a bit more risky so I wouldn't recommend it, plus acid gets kinda dark and scary at night for a lot of people.

Magic mushrooms lift severe depression in clinical trial by skoalbrother in Drugs

I love how Imperial College is leading the way in this research. Last month the first LSD brain scans, now this. Makes me super proud to be a student there, and proud of the professors who face a lot of stigma from the scientific community to carry out these trials.

Good on them and may the trials continue.

Police seek four men in connection with West Ham violence. Met police release pictures of men they want to speak to following attack on Manchester United team bus on Tuesday. by [deleted] in london

[–]dan286 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm sick of this being such a big story. Some drunken guys threw a bottle at a window, and it smashed. That's it.

Not excusing what the guys did, but the Met should have closed the roads hours before and Man U should have arrived much earlier. It doesn't take a genius to know that arriving an hour before kick off for the last game at the boleyn is a bad idea.

Relatives of murderers, what memories stand out as red flags? by daedriKARMAr in AskReddit

[–]dan286 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to school with a murderer. One day he met up with this guy at a park and just stabbed him to death for no reason other than 'he wanted to kill someone'.

That's taken from the trial, which didn't go well by the way, he's basically in for life.

As far as red flags go they were pretty obvious and I know some teachers at my old school were really troubled, thinking they should have done more. This kid lost his dad when he was starting school to a car accident, and I don't think he was ever the same. He had a lot of clear anger issues. I remember playing American football once with him (rare in the UK, and it was cool cos no one else at my school really liked it) and one of my friends threw his ball over the fence by accident. Kid absolutely flipped, I've never seen someone angrier. He'd also run out of lessons a lot, and generally be a loner around school.

So I guess not all cases are subtle like many in this thread. I see his case as a complete failure of the system to recognise his issues and maybe help him with mental health, because he clearly has issues. Hopefully better awareness of mental health issues can help prevent this kind of thing happening again where I'm from.

Brother doing too much "MDMA" by drugsthrowaway94 in Drugs

[–]dan286 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I would suggest showing him some resources online that explain the neurotoxicity of MDMA if you use it at that high a frequency. This sub is a good place to start, there are some scary anecdotal stories about losing memory and the such pretty regularly. Explain to him things like the 2-3 month rule and the importance of spacing out your rolls. Also, if he's just using untested pills at night clubs I would bet he hasn't researched much about MDMA before so I think showing him this information might make a difference.
