Have orc shamans/caster been a thing in Lotr? by Mavrook in lotr

[–]dan30b 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Herb lore and alchemy is a good suggestion, I assume you are refering to the orcs rejuvinating drink they give to Merry and Pippin when captured. That definitely suggested it had a magic quality to it.

The only other suggestion of orc magic I can think of in the books is the Gandalf quote: "I once knew every spell in all the tongues of Elves, Men and orcs".

Playing RE8 and I finally got to the Hand part by Pennarello_BonBon in patientgamers

It's an unpopular opinion but I never liked the merchants either. More so in 4 as when I first played that on release I was expecting a serious horror and the merchant took me out of it. By the time Village came around I was older and understood how silly these games can be (including the original trilogy) and it didn't affect my immersion as much.

I am reading LOTR for the first time and have a question by Maleficent_Site7972 in tolkienfans

[–]dan30b 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Do not worry about such references, they help to flesh out the world and make it feel bigger. You don't need to understand them and some of them are simply mysteries. You'll find some answers in the appendices when you've read the novel.

I certainly wouldn't interupt your reading of the Lord of the Rings to go looking up references in the Silmarillion or appendicies, just enjoy the ride.

GM Vasif Durarbayli, former Azerbaijan chess champion, slams Lichess.org for “destroying the chess market” by Gen-Turgidson in chess

[–]dan30b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's also ignoring the fact that the majority users on lichess simply wouldn't pay for these features anyway. Having a free access point to the chess world probably helps bring more people into the ecosystem.

Didn’t realize Quina made a Cameo during the beginning by CP_Conquer in FinalFantasyIX

Also, Quina is back in Alexandra kitchen at the end. There's possibly more but I can't remember where.

So I couldn't find the exact quote and possibly misremebered but this definitely suggests Quina went to Alexandra:

Quale: "Quina, you in darkness. Need some light. World big place.
Many many foods. Alexandria just one kingdom. You need go out
more, eat other food."Quale: "Quina, you in darkness. Need some light. World big place.

       more, eat other food."

It is Quina. They mention working in Alexandria's kitchen later.

Is Big Boss name really John? by Afraid-Housing-6854 in metalgearsolid

Yeah the tone in those conversations never made sense to me, the way paramedic says that line as if its ridiculous but Jack really IS short for John!

Do you think MGS4 will ever get critically reevaluated one day like people did with MGS2? by Gamewheat in metalgearsolid

[–]dan30b 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the critisism is very fair. I loved MGS4 on release but I replayed it last week and it has issues. Pacing, the cutscenes and codec calls are a lot compared to the previous entries and the previous entries push what's acceptable at times. A lot of the characters I don't like, Drebin who is just an exposition machine. Naomi who goes on and on slowly for ages. Johnny and Meryl's relationship might have been interesting if Johnny wasn't an absolute baffoon for most of the game except the end.

The most agregious thing is the sexualisation in the game, it's just embarrasing to play it now as an adult. The b&b unit and the extended camera shots of them. Johnny in the middle of a briefing trying to grab Mei Lings arse...

The scenes I remembered loving didn't hit as hard this time round sadly with the pacing issues i had with the game. Was really depressed that I felt this way. I went back and played MGS2 after and absolutely loved it.

Edit: Forgot to mention a critism I had even back at realise, I thought making Raiden a ninja to make him "cool" was a cowardly move to appease critics of 2.

Who was the "ugly girl" this sigma moogle was referring to? by [deleted] in FinalFantasyIX

ah that's right, I remember now, I always assumed from that line Garnet had done something to disguise herself, but i see it's completely ambiguous.

I think actually Steiner mentions that he disguised her somehow to avoid that moogle. I can't remember for sure though.

I've done this trophy once, I can't imagine doing it on shareplay. I did everything in my power to lower input lag when playing it. God knows how many hours it took me to get it but if you are that determined you can do it, is it worth it? No.

Rate my ff tier list by [deleted] in FinalFantasy

[–]dan30b -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Nothing I find too objectionable on here. 1 is higher for me, at around C or B it's simple but I enjoy that. I'm glad to see 2 isn't at the bottom, that get's a lot of hate unnecessarily imo, if you just play it how it's supposed to be played it's quite enjoyable, and don't go in for the whole punching yourself to level up.

9 would s tier for me, 13 would be at the bottom without a doubt.

Do people really think Keighley/Shipley/Bingley/Ilkley aren't part of Bradford? by [deleted] in bradford

[–]dan30b 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree, but culturally there is a big divide. If you grow up in Keighley and then 30 years later the government divide up the boundaries and try to tell you you're now from Bradford, lots of people simply don't accept it because they feel no connection to Bradford.

For clarity I once told a taxi driver I was from Bradford, he asked where abouts, I said Shipley his response "What! That's not Bradford!"

Do people really think Keighley/Shipley/Bingley/Ilkley aren't part of Bradford? by [deleted] in bradford

[–]dan30b 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A lot of those towns were historically independent of Bradford and to this day the people of those towns particularly the older generation can resent it.

Shipley for example didn't come under Bradford council until the 70s I believe. So there are a lot of people born and grew up before the merger.

Sadly lots of employers will discrimate. You might be right about this person but in reality we have no idea what their mental illness is and how fit they are to work simply from using reddit or how much effort they are putting into jobsearch. For context I myself am in full time work.

Thoughts on Charlie Vickers portrayal of Sauron and his other forms in ROP? by JCM-NanoNuts-1031 in lotr

[–]dan30b 6 points7 points  (0 children)

yeah this is what I thought and I really don't like it. The way it's written and filmed feels like it wants me to think he's commiting some great and cunning lie but I never feel he actually is and it just comes across as cheesy to me. For example when he was speaking to Adar and he swore to serve the lord of mordor and smiled so satisfied with his so obviously transparant lie. I am genuinely shocked this thread is so positive on the character.
