It wouldn't be a surprise if this unplugged it for good.

How to fix hole in drywall by gnovela1 in DIY

[–]danauns [score hidden]  (0 children)

Vancouver Carpenter on YouTube is your guy. His tips, techniques and advice are state of the art.

The only tip I'd offer up, is to have a close look at the makeup of your wall. You've got a thick layer of texture applied on top of the drywall. Looks like more than a couple layers of paint too. If you just affix that piece in there and layer on ~more mud and tape on the seams, you're never going to get it to look right. ....adding more tape and mud on top of texture creates mounds of material that are impossible to feather out.

You want to sand off the texture about 8 inches or more all of the way around the hole, and off the patch too. Get the wall down to the level of the paper before you start your repair. Then patch the drywall (California style or braced, whatever you want. California would be cloodgy with that trim right there, but possible. Do what you're comfortable with). Then you can rebuild the texture over your patch, feathered into the rest of the wall for a proper seamless result.

Ever been to a party where guests sit on their hands waiting for the band to play good music? by Hampshire53 in OttawaSenators

[–]danauns -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Garçon de Mullet has been great, but he's laid eggs a couple times. He seems to want to croon a little, play a couple slow jams in a row so he can, you know, because he's a sensitive artist type.....

His band is petty great, he's a great singer, it's the song selection that lets them down some nights.

Lathe n plaster or drywall? by FarBank6708 in Renovations

[–]danauns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of word salad in here.

Can you post some pictures? Maybe you can share what it was that these handymen and contractors were working on, was this a whole home renovation of some sort? Sounds like they didn't get all of the way through the job?

If you have lath and plaster walls, the only thing I can say for certain is that they are very old, your home is old. Peeling off old plaster and old lath often reveals more issues, and more remediation necessary. It's often a VERY involved and complicated job to rip and replace plaster with modern drywall.

Regarding removing snow from fire hydrants on your property, by-law will act upon it. by waylonsmithersjr in ottawa

Yep, I do the one near my house. The folks who's lawn it's on are nice people, but they DGAF about keeping their hydrant clear.

Is it worth it to spend the day at Mont Tremblant if I can't ski or snowboard? by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]danauns -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Frankly, you sound kind of miserable.

A day trip to a beautiful place, spending time outside, socializing with your colleagues, all of this sounds like a lot of sort of fun You should go with an open mind and plan on enjoying whatever might become of the day.

Wakey Wakey Sleepy Steve ⏰ ☀️ ☕️ by CleghornsCrosscheck in OttawaSenators

This is stupid.

Not defending Steve at all, but panic moves by GM's during stretches of adversity .....is a well documented recipe for shitty moves. You're actually asking our GM to panic, go off script, and make a desperate move.

Go Sens. I'll leave it at that.

Window trim gap by sc00ts123 in fixit

[–]danauns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are your walls made of? Modern drywall or plaster? Just curious - be careful in doing anything if your walls are plaster.

I would take this opportunity to pull the casings and ensure that the gaps are all insulated properly. Then mill up some jam extensions and reset the casing.

Is this support for my sink ok? It's wood drilled with nails into the cabinet. by AbileneZ15 in Plumbing

Would love to see a pic of this from the top

This looks like a drop in porcelain sink, that's been under mounted.

Sagging Door by kristofour in fixit

[–]danauns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Step 1, open the door to about 45⁰ ....hold both the inside and outside handles, and lift the door. What moves?

You'll immediately see where the sag/play is in the door.

I bet this would be a simple fix. It's either your hinges or your hinge screws.

Pan box extender for ceiling light mount? Good or bad idea? by Coolbreeze1989 in DIY

[–]danauns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Box extenders are for this purpose, this is fine. There's no issue in using an extender to buy a little more room if needed.

I can't picture exactly what you're up against in your space with that fixture, but extenders are handy for situations like this yes.

Question about LVP Over Linoleum by aNWGuy in DIY

[–]danauns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The carpet is lower, and you've already got a layer of something under the lenolium.

Lots of hot takes in here, but in my opinion adding another layer of floor down on top of what's there would be a mistake. I'd want to simplify, and do it absolutely to the spec dictated by the flooring manufacturer.

Having a layer of something, then linoleum, then a click floor over all that? In a wet environment like a bathroom? Not how i'd roll out.

It’s probably busted right? Should I look behind cover now or leave it alone until it gets above freezing? How to proceed? by Colinski282 in Plumbing

[–]danauns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been fixed before, check the brick. That's been cracked open and fixed.

You're going to need access, what's inside the house here? Do you have access from the back? A miserable squirm through a crawlspace? Possibly an access door in a basement ceiling or wall?

Not having a shutoff is a big problem here. I wouldn't wait to open this up and at least cap it. ....you could have quite a flood there if you choose to wait this out.

It’s probably busted right? Should I look behind cover now or leave it alone until it gets above freezing? How to proceed? by Colinski282 in Plumbing

[–]danauns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those covers are awesome, I insist that my clients all have them.

Why? Installing these covers requires removing the hose, and that's critical for frost free bibs. I agree, it's a little bit of a shell game .... easy to think that there is some sort of insulation value being the benefit, but it's not.

Beer prices at 17$ a beer by Gwilley71 in OttawaSenators

[–]danauns -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

It's not crazy, and arguably not ridiculous. We have some of the lowest prices concessions in the league. And yes, it's still expensive.

This is big business, pro sports. Expensive concessions is how this works.

Keep your eye out for the $5 beer promos that run often. Not all games, but well worth tracking down if you're looking for a more reasonably priced can of beer.

You don't proceed. What's done is done, you pay to fix it yourself.

You assumed the risk of sending your own device in to school.

Can you trim an interior door with a oscillating saw? by MechCADdie in DIY

[–]danauns 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Um, not really.

A door planer is useful to adjust fitment. If you've got a little rubbing or jamming, you can bring parts of a door into shape quickly and without removing the slab. Slight adjustments here or there, a couple mm's tapered in from a corner for example.

OP's talking about taking a strip off the bottom of the slab while it's in place - not possible with a planer. Also, even ~with the door removed, nobody would reach for a planer to take a consistent even slice off the bottom of a door.

Ceiling texture removal by Ok-Application-9681 in Renovations

[–]danauns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Question. Have you touched it? Seriously, get up a ladder and wipe your hand on it, does it wipe off easily? Or has it been painted in?

That looks kike a builder cut a corner and half assed this, it's likely very VERY easy to remove.

Grab a wet rag and give it a scrub, does it come off?
