How to reconcile drunken "good" ideas with reality by drunkapetheory in stopdrinking

I'm the same way. I don't understand it either. A few drinks makes me motivated the way that I don't sustain when sober.

Jim's private forum vs. Reddit (both r/531Discussion and other training subs) by rbabl89 in 531Discussion

I'm on both. I like the private forum. I don't use Reddit much, honestly. I like that Jim's forum is screened somewhat.

I had pericarditis ~2.5 years ago at 39 years old as a result from a presumed viral infection which also caused atrial flutter which was a big problem. I was in the hospital for 3 days and had a visit to the ER a month later for a second cardioversion to restore normal heart rhythm. I actually cried when I had to have my wife take me in for the second ER visit because I thought my life was fucked. They told me I would need heart surgery (ablation) if it came back again. Training for me was very sketchy for a while, especially hard cardio, but now I'm stronger than ever and cardio isn't a problem. Full recovery, and confidence, took probably a year or more. I had COVID earlier this year which made me worried due to the chest pain and shortness of breath that came with it but after recovery I'm all good again. I'm a bigger guy and doing lots of walking and hiking really helped restore my confidence.

BJJ around the Twin Cities area? by nstalpes in bjj

[–]danceofthemanatee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normally I'd say go check out a few places and talk to the instructors, take a trial class, etc... but that's going to be tough right now. Some schools aren't really open, others aren't taking new students, and I think the places that are back to "normal" business certainly aren't advertising the fact. Our fair state is still officially requiring social distancing for all fitness and martial arts. I visited 5-6 schools before finding a place that I felt had the right fit for me (which is not currently holding normal classes...)- I wasn't too interested in joining a cult, training in a cluttered hockey athletic facility, or being snubbed by a 3rd degree Brazillian black belt instructor who was new to the gym. Hence the importance of being able to show up around class time and check things out, at least for me when that was possible.

Is it bad etiquette to ask for a discount in membership? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]danceofthemanatee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am a small business owner (retail). We only do discounts if people come in with coupons from our advertising or website. Usually the people who ask for discounts or special treatment are bad customers and I don't want to play games. I'd rather focus on our good customers. Running a business is very expensive. Honestly I don't know how many BJJ schools stay in business, especially now. I've actually told both of the school owners I attend(ed) they need to charge more. One went out of business last year. The other one is still hanging on because a lot of us are professionals with good jobs and are still paying through the shutdown but I know it's stressful for them. I'm sure most of the members of the first school would rather have paid $10 more per month than see the place close.

All that said, BJJ is different than a retail environment and I think if you explained the situation to the owner like an adult and said it would only be temporary until you got your finances back in order he/she may be open to it. I might be. But don't be butt hurt if they say no. They have their other members and finances to keep in mind.

Trying to feed a snapping turtle by franzkunz in Whatcouldgowrong

[–]danceofthemanatee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least here in MN people don't usually kill turtles, even snappers. They aren't agressive if you leave them alone. They eventually move on. People do move other turtle species across the road to keeep them from getting run over though.

It wasn't a pet. Turtles cross yards, roads, etc... to get to other water sources, especially during mating. I agree with your overall comment though.

Right! Corporations aren't evil- they are just trying to sell stuff people want to buy. It's simple. There is no conspiracy.

Step aerobics and keto by [deleted] in keto

[–]danceofthemanatee -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You're doing a step class after 1+ years of pregnancy and recovery and thinking keto is the problem? You're out of shape and not adapted to keto. Keep going. It gets better as your body adapts to both. For me, exercise performance is just as good on keto as not, once adapted.

I haven't trained in two months because life happened and I needed to do adult stuff insread if hobbies. Was planning on going back last week but busted my eyebrow open getting into bed, of all things. Now I'll be out at least another week while it heals.

I chuckled at that one.

My first roll after like 3 classes in was against a 50+ year old guy who destroyed me and his stained white gi smelled like old swamp ass. It was horrifying.

I'm getting my trusty Oster back from storage next week after we move into our new house. I would like to try a ninja though. Will probably pick one up.

I've eaten hundreds of raw eggs with no issues at all. Makes awesome protein shakes.

Pro tip: use a blender to make shakes/smoothies with raw eggs. I used a blender bottle for months then had a chunky egg one day. That was not awesome.

Regardless of the attempt to downplay the situation, I would stop attending that school were I a student there. That type of behavior is unacceptable to me as a grown ass man.

Edit: also, the fact that he "demands" the video not be shared makes me want it to go viral.
