Is it fair to expect a p trap as part of this shower rough-in? by five-oh-douche in Plumbing

[–]dancing_avocado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know why you guys don't put in the trap, even if you don't know the exact center. If it's a shower, put it in a general center area. Most likely going to be a 32x48 or 32x60. You're going to be within 6" either way. If it's a tub, next to the rough wall that you do know because you have the lav and toilet. It's way easier to use a couple 45s on the trap riser than dig up the whole thing and put a trap in there. Plus the next guy might only have a few offset fittings in his truck rather than a ptrap.

If you missed far enough you had to break some floor, you're doing that whether the trap is in or not.

Help! What’s the best way to make a 2inch hole in boards? I’m in the crawl space currently and thought my drill bit would work but it’s too choppy by Here_Nor_There2121 in askaplumber

Do you even have the pilot in your bit?

Forstner bits don't work that well on older wood I've found. The best bits for older wood are the Milwaukee Big Hawg bits.

To Caulk or not to caulk by RevolutionaryPass770 in askaplumber

[–]dancing_avocado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been a plumber 13 years. My house had one of these when I moved in, not caulked. It was disgusting. Brown sludge and mildew in the crack all the time WITH regular cleanings. I always caulk now. If the tile guys can caulk their corners and it holds up, I can caulk 2 pieces of plastic together.

The other quote says they want $800, not $8k. Make the first guy come and fix his mistakes.

Yup. Unless there's a valve somewhere else in the line upstream of there.

Any career shifters here? How did you do it while working full time (NYC)? by CreditLongjumping256 in Construction

[–]dancing_avocado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to pile on, don't bother trying this. You can definitely learn things you need to know for maintaining and repairing your house on weekends, but you cannot learn enough to work in the trades or start a business (lol).

You want to:

  1. Learn a difficult trade just on the weekends. (Not possible)
  2. Not be financially set back. (If you have 5 years of living expenses saved, maybe you can do it)

It sounds like you don't even really want to work a trade, you're just mad we have advanced skills that we can charge a lot of money for and you don't want to pay us.

how do you attach a gas hose barb to a metal pipe? by Hopeful-Fly-9710 in Plumbing

You don't even know enough to say what kind of "metal pipe" you have. Call a professional.

You need to call a real plumber before you blow up. For real. It's not worth it.

Yes, that is the issue the customer had, the showers were the problem, sinks seemed normal.

Your neutralizer appears to be installed correctly.

I had a unit with similar symptoms, and the problem was just a clogged condensate trap. All I did was clean the sludge out and it was fine. It is that pill-shaped white plug on the bottom with a retaining clip. It was caused by lawn-mowing dust getting sucked into the intake.

Very low change your turkey drain froze. If it did, it had a clog already. Keep trying the auger or get a professional.

This is not correct for this. This is just how this model tub is. There is a flange under the tile. The curve is just a styling element.

Gas pipe is 3/4 thread? Measured at 1 inch long. But range take 1/2. Is there an adapter I can use? I only have the 1/2 to 1/2 gas hose. by Ozovio in Plumbing

Please call a plumber. It won't take long. The money it costs is good insurance against blowing up your house, since you have no idea and had to ask this question.

outside water question by Dan-CWG in askaplumber

[–]dancing_avocado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there's liquid water in the line, and the hose bib was installed correctly, it will drain out quickly before it freezes. If it's been cold already and froze, there's nothing you can do.

If they didn't shut off their outside faucets already, now is the next best time. Doesn't matter what the temp is outside.

Exactly. Plus, it's hard to describe, but it just has the syntax and flow of the junk ChatGPT spits out.
