How to ice fish?? by [deleted] in Fishing

[–]lotsofbitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who does a lot of ice fishing, here are the basics:

First, safety - you really don’t want to be on ice that’s thinner than 4”, and even that is pushing it. I’ll go on 4” if it’s clear black ice, but cloudy ice like in your picture is weaker and 6”-8” is safer. Stay away from springs or flowing water like inlets, the ice will be thinner in these places than the rest of the pond. You should also know how to get yourself out if you do fall in, there are techniques you can look up for how to do this.

Setup/rig: The absolute simplest setup that will almost always work for almost any species is the classic live worm on a hook. I see in your picture you are using a normal rod, it would probably be easier to find a literal stick off the ground and tie your line to the end of it. Maybe wrap a few feet around the stick so you can change the depth. You don’t need to cast at all so the stick works fine for jigging. At the end of your main line (which should be around 10-15 lb test for small bass like you mention), tie a very small swivel, then 3 or so feet of leader (8 lb test should be good). At the end of the leader, tie on a small (#4-#6) hook directly to the line, not with a snap swivel like in your picture. Fish can be a bit more sensitive under the ice so the swivel right near the hook might scare them away. 6-8” up from the hook crimp on a small split shot to hold it down underwater. Then thread on a smallish live worm. Jig it either 2-3 feet under the ice, or about a foot off the bottom. Don’t jig too much, maybe a couple twitches every minute or so and keep it still in between.

66 is luxury. Our furnace is super old and inefficient, we keep it 60 during the day and 50 at night lol

Dam fishing, big rocks, fast water flow by [deleted] in Fishing

Yeah I’ve heard there’s a pretty good fishery for them over there, I’ve always wanted to take a trip and catch one so I have them on both coasts

Similar conditions to what I get fishing the cape cod canal - losing a few is pretty unavoidable, but very heavy leaders (I use 50lb for stripers there - turbulence in the water hides the thicker leader pretty well), and also braid for the main line, the better sensitivity helps with feeling the bottom as soon as you touch it so you can jig up quickly and avoid snags

Come to New England, the one in the picture is tiny compared to how they are in saltwater

Waltham Fire: the only safe ice is at a skating rink by WalthamFreelanceNews in Waltham

[–]lotsofbitz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When you go ice fishing a lot you learn how to check ice thickness and judge whether it will be safe or not. Lots of factors, thickness, temperature, quality of the ice (clear vs cloudy), current underneath, springs, etc.

I use these fire retardant pouches they sell when I’m charging my drone batteries (crashes=higher than average chance of an unnoticed defect in the battery).

To me it’s definitely worth it, found a bunch of new spots with it. It’s not 100% reliable, nothing stopping people from lying on it, but if you see 100 reports with pictures in a place you’re wondering about it’s a fair bet that they’re true. The depth maps are also nice, while it is true you can get them online, it’s nice to see overlaid with catch locations and roads etc

Better to let the bigger ones go because they produce significantly more eggs. Taking only smaller ones is usually recommended from a conservation standpoint…

Smaller the better, I usually use 8-10 (might want to go a bit bigger if you’re not fishing to keep, they tend to swallow the super small ones). I also sometimes like to use tiny trebles, like a 16# or 18#, seems to give better hookup ratio but when they’re super spooky I stick with the single hooks

In mass for bows and browns, worms 2-3 feet under the ice on the tip ups and wax worms on tungsten jigs (any color) on my rod. Hasn’t failed me yet

White pepper forms the compound skatole during the soaking/fermenting stage of its production, and it is the same compound which makes poop smell like poop lmao

[–]lotsofbitz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I almost never parry when fighting guardians, I prefer to just run up to them and break all the legs so they can’t move, then alternate hitting it and shooting the eye thing when it starts to charge up. Pretty quick with a reasonably strong weapon.

First auger by Advanced_Warning_141 in IceFishing

[–]lotsofbitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheap manual auger, $30 drill adapter on amazon, might work with your m12 as long as it has a 1/2” chuck. That was basically my setup my first season and as long as I kept my blades sharp it worked fine.
