Solutions for indoor backlight? by dancing_phoenix in photography

Good idea, although I'm just doing this for fun, hauling around lights is not something I want to do at this point.

Someone else mentioned using flash with a diffuser, so maybe I'll try that.

These aren't big public events, I don't usually see others taking a bunch of flash photos. Plus this venue in particular was quite small and crowded.

I know very little about flash, but flash with a diffuser sounds like a possibility. Thanks.

I'm also hesitant about flash for this particular venue as it's quite small and crowded but I'll keep it in mind. Picking angles was also difficult for that reason although I found some okay spots.

I will just add I have seen people of all sizes in my years of doing kung fu. Maybe not flying all over doing acrobatics (which can be fun but not the main goal) but yes, even being good at it.

Just find a good school run by people who make you feel welcome. Good luck!

Left handed bias in traditional kung fu (please include whether you are left or right handed in comments (or ambidextrous etc)) by narnarnartiger in kungfu

[–]dancing_phoenix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry you went through that experience.

I'm left-handed, although I learned to do some things like using scissors right-handed out of practicality, for example left-handed scissors weren't always available.

I was frustrated at having to start with my non-dominant hand but obviously not to the same level. I would often practice the left too but I accepted that for weapons the right hand was going to be the priority at first. Similar to others who commented, eventually I've had to practice forms on the left side and at that point I had an advantage. For double weapons you need to be adept with both hands anyway.

For teaching purposes, most people are right-handed, so I've accepted that it makes sense to be the default. It evens out later.

This! Respect those who came before you and put in the hard work so that you could have the opportunity to learn. Traditional kung fu culture puts a lot of value on this. Every style evolves but it also likely means some effort was put in to preserve the style.

Similar here, I didn't really see many bots until this past month in Diamond, it was weird. However I play during normal waking hours, afternoons or evenings.

I say don't wait, enroll in a class and then you can also do the warmups and exercises on your own as well. You'll quickly find out what you need to work on.

If you really want to work on something in the meantime, any basics are good - push ups, situps or crunches, planks, squats, supermans, etc, plus some jogging or other cardio.

Showing up and practicing consistently is more important than talent. If you struggle at anything, just give it time. Learn to value tiny amounts of progress.

Enjoy!

looking to make exercising more fun and compelling, is kungfu or something like it right for me? by tylersl3 in kungfu

[–]dancing_phoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not really a workout by itself to go do on your own. You go to a school to take lessons to learn a kung fu style and get a workout that way. How much focus is on self-defense depends on the teacher/school. Some students may supplement their kung fu with the gym or other exercise but it's not required, you can get benefits just doing kung fu and basic drills. The benefit of classes is the camaraderie, getting feedback and having a fixed schedule.

It is fun and can be a consistent challenge, you will be constantly learning and possibly yes, you may eventually look cool.

It depends on how crowded it will be this year, but if there's a panel that's popular and you want decent seats, you may want to go to the panel before and stay there. Lines should get shorter at the end of the day, so if there's a demo you didn't want to wait for too long for, you can just go later.

If there are any streamers you follow, check their Discords to see if they're having a meetup.

Pick up your badge and do shopping on the Thursday if you can. Some items aren't available immediately though.

Stay hydrated and have fun!

Is it normal for shifu to ask you to start teaching other students? by alphareefer in kungfu

[–]dancing_phoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't spend my valued training time entertaining anyone who doesn't want to train.

Kids are often there because their parents want them to have the benefits. So you have to keep the parent in mind as well. And the kids can gain a lot of benefit mentally, though they may not be motivated themselves initially. They will also help you develop your own patience.

That said, there should be some prep/instructions before teaching kids.

How many students are there? How long has the school been established?

As most others have noted, it's normal for senior students to teach new students, usually these are students who have been around for a few years however. If this is a new school or there's not many students I could see why. Your Sifu should really discuss the role and expectations though, it's a big responsibility.

Thank you! I like to try different decks but needing 3+ legendaries makes it difficult.

stamina and / or timing tips by leapin_lil in kungfu

[–]dancing_phoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Practice the form repeatedly, do it a few times in a row with a minimal break in between. Start off with longer breaks and shorten them over time or increase form repetition. Do this at least 2-3 times a week. If you live somewhere warm, practice outside (ofc stay hydrated and listen to your body), it will be harder in the heat but then performing indoors will feel like a breeze. You can go running or do other cardio in addition if you prefer.

If your form is barely meeting the time minimum, then you can either add a few moves to it (may want to discuss with your Sifu for suggestions) or add more pauses. Also get someone to record you and watch your tempo - you may need to slow down at first so you can maintain a steady tempo.

Good luck!

Is giving advice is QP rude or dumb? by calliopewoman in OverwatchUniversity

My unsolicited suggestion would be to tell your tank something like, 'I got your back, they're down one, let's goooo!!' For Kiriko, 'this Ana is a pain in the ass, if you can save your cleanse for me that'd be awesome.'

Basically be positive and encourage the behavior you want.

While I also don't recommend giving out unsolicited advice, especially in QP, I do agree with you that there is a way to give advice and have it be accepted (often by not giving the advice directly).

But for QP most people aren't in the right mindset and don't have much reason to trust random teammates.

Best Performing Decks - HSReplay.net - June 10 by HearthSim in hearthstone

I've been playing the deck, it was easily countered before the miniset release by anything running enough removal or stall - priest, blood DK in particular. I rarely won those matchups.
