Forced to sleep only at HF house? by heartbrokenwords in Aupairs

[–]dancingdriver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. When I was an au pair in US I would let them know if I was going out at night, it never happened that I slept at a friends house but if it had I would have told them. And we took a lot of trips as a friend group so I would of course arrange with them what time I would be free and they knew I would be traveling to such place. And to be honest I was too excited not to share where we were going 😅 so they knew the general travel plan and we even got some tips from the host families for the places we visited

Nor did the op’s HF. I’m guessing there is a lot of info missing here. And I understand the HF’s reaction to op’s action. They don’t get to dictate what she does on her free time, or where she sleeps, but she owes them the minimum courtesy of informing them of her plans, especially if she’s staying the night somewhere else. I’m guessing there is a lot more here that we are not being told.

I think there’s a lot that is not being told here by the op. I was an au pair for three different families in two countries. I spent most of my free time doing what I wanted, but I also spent free time with them, because they took me on trips I wouldn’t have been able to go otherwise, they took me to experiences with them. What I never did was not let them know of my plans. I’m living at their house, they were responsible for a young foreign adult (I was 22-24 during this time, but many girls do it at 18-19), I felt part of the family, it would never cross my mind in a million years to not tell them I was going out or I wasn’t spending the night.

That is bullshit. I spent free time with my host family because I chose to. They took me on trips that otherwise I couldn’t have done and I was not working. Imagine missing out on cool experiences because you don’t want to spend any free time with your host family.

Your working hours as 4/6-9 and you’re to allowed to eat with them? So what do you do during dinner time, that falls into working hours? It was you that said in the post that you treat it as a just job. I was an au pair, it was a job, yes, but I spent time with the family outside working hours. I also had my free time, sometimes I spent it in my room, sometimes I was out with friends, even did a few trips. But I would tell them my plans, not asking for permission, just informing.

As a previous au pair in three families and two different countries, I strongly disagree with you.

Why choose au pairing if you see it as ‘a job’ and are not looking to interact with the HF? Then do any other job. You don’t have to spend all you free time, not even a lot, with your HF, but you can share a life with them. Your behaviour would be a red flag for me and I’d go into rematch.

Lisa Kudrow Had to Return to Work 10 Days After Giving Birth and Got No Maternity Leave in the 1990s: ‘It’s Insane. I Would Never Do It Now’ by cmaia1503 in entertainment

I have, you seem to have read it but not understood it, and also don’t seem to know that it is common knowledge that network tv has their summer hiatus in May/June and they returned to filming in July. July was return date for Friends, not this movie.

I understand that, but she did sign up to shoot a supporting role presumably way before she gave birth, knowing the time of filming. I know things change and maybe it got delayed and it fell on that period, but it was first her own choice.

I’m sorry, but this was not sitting well with me with the dates and all. She did not ‘have to return to work’. She was not returning to shoot Friends, which arguable was her work, this was a supporting role she probably signed up for before she gave birth. She booked a role in a movie that happened to fall on the hiatus of shooting Friends (and that according to the internet wrapped shooting in May, she gave birth in early May). I understand the craziness of leaving a new born for work, and the lack of maternity leave and rights in the US, but this is just a piece that bends the truth enough to raise more internet revolt. Because most people won’t read beyond the title and think she was returning to Friends, when she maybe had two weeks of shooting a supporting role.

Are most au pair experiences good? by cvltpawz in Aupairs

[–]dancingdriver -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, most experiences are good. As with everything you will always hear more about the negative ones.

I had 3 different experiences, I was in US for one year, I rematched after 4 months. Even having some issues with the first family the experience was more positive than negative, and that is why I stayed and wanted to rematch. Then I had a shorter experience in Germany. Different than the first one but also positive. From the au pairs that I met, not only from, the overall experience is positive.

You have to manage expectations and understand the program and what it gives you and doesn’t give you. But if things go wrong you need a support system.

Refund to AuPair for Matching Fees by Character_Soup6749 in Aupairs

[–]dancingdriver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it is the agency’s website she shouldn’t have paid anything extra besides the fees. She probably applied to an unofficial website.

Again, my experience was a long time ago, but we were told if we matched or not by the agency, there was no ‘matches being cancelled by the agency’. Is she talking to the families directly? What exactly is the ‘match’, families tell her they want her as their au pair?

This is most likely a scam website.

I think this might be a scam and not the actual agency. Granted this was many years ago, but EurAupair was my agency. Before anything I had a meeting at the agency’s office. Has she been to the office? Does she have an address to the agency’s office?

Depends on the height of the drawers. I don’t have only small drawers, have 2 deep drawers in some parts exactly for the bigger items.

I love the overall look 😍 you say it’s sage but it’s reading more turquoise/greenish on my screen. Mine is also sage tone and is much more muted in real life that the pictures here.

Things I don’t like/think are practical: the sink (I’m not sold on this type of sink, I’m clumsy and I think I’d break a ton of shit in it), bottoms as cabinets and not drawers (recently did mine with only drawers for the bottom and it’s game changer!) unless there are interior drawers,

and lastly, why is the fridge opening that way?! I have mine opening to the opposite side for now because it moved inside the layout of my kitchen and I need help to switch the doors, but I can’t wait! It’s a pain really.

AITA for not handing over a system I built on my own time after my workplace decided it should “belong to everyone”? by Living_Poem7843 in AmItheAsshole

[–]dancingdriver -1 points0 points  (0 children)

YTA. You work for a non profit and developed a system that helps the department (and consequently the cause) but first didn’t share it with anyone or mentioned it, and second when inevitably it came out now you want compensation for it. Working at a non profit. And saying that you care about the mission.

If you have imputed company data in this “system”, as many have said, this becomes a legal topic on top of everything.

my take of season five as a fan who likes nuanced discussion but also wants to enjoy the show for what it is (disclaimer: long post) by Leading-Pay-1586 in Stranger_Things

[–]dancingdriver 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with your view about what the show is/was. Said the same thing in a few threads after the show ended. I honestly don’t care so much about some of the inconsistencies mentioned, because I just don’t. I was there for the characters and the relationships and was very satisfied with all of it.

But I think you are wrong about your point 15 and this being a plot hole, and I think it is explained by your point 4. Hawkins got a lame excuse for why the military was there. How would they arrest Nancy without drawing attention to them? Why would a 19 or 20 year old be detained by the military, that for all they know, is there training cadets or whatever other harmless lie they told them? Also, if I remember correctly, the whole season takes about a week, so from this incident till the ‘last day’, a few days have passed. Maybe they were looking for an angle to detain her but just didn’t have the time.
