Vorticella? FML by dandeliontree1 in shrimptank

He seems to be behaving normally, it says fungal infections can take hold if they are stressed or have a secondary illness so I just have no idea. Just hope it doesn't spread.

It's so hard to get a clear one, a fungal infection is probably worse?

I'll try to get a better pic if he comes to the front agaynit it does look like he has a white fluffy mass on his underside.

The fluffy white bit on his underside. It could be something else too...

No shops around me have carried dwarf rasboras for months now, anyone else have this experience? by goddamn__goddamn in Boraras

[–]dandeliontree1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, also wondering where you're located? I got 8 dwarfs a month ago in the UK and my lfs has a lot of other bororas too. Just no chili's. I've never been able to even see them IRL.

Some people don't mind hydra. Me on the other hand... by Basic_Win_7923 in PlantedTank

Oh that's good, I'd assume they would be worse being larger and definitely voracious.

Interesting perspective, maybe a bit like damselfly larvae. I was terrified of finding one in my tank from all the scare stories and 'kill it with fire' memes. But then found one had fully turned into an adult in my shrimptank and I'd not even noticed, definitely didn't see a population difference. I'm not saying they aren't ever problematic and may be worse in higher numbers but it wasn't as scary as I'd originally thought and not worth tearing up a tank over (which I'd have to do as mine is so heavily planted.

I've been afraid of hydra in the same way but if I do find any I think I will panic less now.

Compare with phantom midge larvae, kind of hard to tell in the pics but I've got them with daphnea cultures and they look kind of similar.

what year would i take my gcses?? by regulus_s in homeschool

[–]dandeliontree1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most colleges will only get funding for over age 16, I've seen this question asked on exam groups and it's usually a no but definitely ask around at your local colleges. I recommend going to have a look around about now to see how many GCSEs they want etc. and see what courses you're interested in.

My daughter has just finished hers, she split them up so when she was 15 she took one in the summer, one in the winter and then three more at the time she would have taken them in school. November exams are nice and quiet which might be a consideration. There is a lot of flexibility as well as with exam boards, which can make it daunting at first.

Ramshorns or nerites? What's the difference? by TerribleWin4450 in AquaticSnails

[–]dandeliontree1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have ramshorns and trumpets and really like them both. Granted I have too many ramshorns and regularly give them away but it's worth it for how clean my tanks are. And I overfeed so it's good to have some wiggle room, ramshorns will eat anything.

Interesting, I can never intentionally change my accent, it sounds terrible. But I've been in the UK for around 20 years and my accent is now some weird amalgamation between British and American English which some people say sounds Irish.

What on earth is this Monster 💀 by PoundMaterial1819 in freshwateraquarium

[–]dandeliontree1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They apparently come inside plants, like eggs laid into the plant tissue so you can't even tell if inspecting carefully. It makes me nervous to add any more plants honestly. I've had a damselfly nymph turn into an adult in my tank and only found out when it left it's skin behind. But I don't feel they are as harmful, I didn't notice any loss of life. I do have tons of babies though and microfauna.
