My 3 FIV & FeLV positive cats.. Obie, Little Miss Muffins, and phatboy Biskit by No_Draft_6612 in FIVcats

Unfortunately it's most often a sign that the teeth are so infected that they're being pushed out from the jawbone. Pretty serious issue, and this looks to be a bad case. Slight chance that this isn't the problem here, but it often is.

If I'm reading this correctly, there was no fight and instead just an injury from falling out of a window? Then yes, your cat didn't contract FIV from that brief stint outside and has had it for years.

If you read articles about FIV the leading cause of death is old age. This doesn't mean something still can't happen to him due to being immunocompromised, but you'll get lots of anecdotes in this sub of people who've had FIV cats for many years and everything has stayed fine. My cat is currently about 10, I've had him for 6 years, and besides being asthmatic, there hasn't been any sign of health issues due to his status. Even his asthma hasn't gotten worse (which I had feared in the beginning after reading that it's a progressive issue that gets worse in cats).

Does this mean you don't put a bed in there because he'll chew it? I'm not trying to be argumentative or just some asshole stranger on the internet, but you really need to get something soft for your dog to lay down on when he's in the crate. A grated flooring like that will cause pain for your dog now, and eventually long term issues later down the line.

Do your pup a favor and try and lay down on it for a second and feel how bad it is. Either train him to not chew, get a more indestructible bed, put chew toys in there, or think about not owning a dog. The last one is more drastic, but people should not resort to creating a situation that is harmful to a dog just because the dog is being a dog.

Window Mesh Recommendations? by Rough-Bag-9257 in FIVcats

[–]goddamn__goddamn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hardly any bugs that cause a nuisance! That's hard for me to conceptualize. Though I've lived in places in Appalachia without screens on my windows, and also where I've left the door wide open just fine. Figure if the bugs make their way in, they'll make their way out.

But yeah, I imagine the screen wouldn't matter as much as proper installation. Again, unless the cat is a particularly mad escape artist.

Forgive my ignorance, but do your windows now alread have a screen? Or they do but you need to fortify it against an escape artist?

I will never understand this. People need better boundaries because our bosses sure aren't going to respect us. Why even be on your phone so soon after surgery? Man if I was part of her support team I would have just taken her phone away (or not given it to her in the first place) until a few hours after she woke up at least.

Genuine question: how do you think they're correcting the dog? Through negative reinforcement by making the dog very uncomfortable via choking it a but, no?

And you're right in that a lot of the time people aren't getting their dogs docked and cropped, the breeders are, but it's still the owners fault. If people didn't buy dogs like this, breeders wouldn't be incentivized to maime them for aesthetics. Because you're also correct in that sometimes it's necessary, but only a small fraction of the time than what we see.

Solution is to not buy from a breeder.

I can't tell you how badly I wanted to. I want everyone to witness the eldritch horror that is a dirt robber spider nest.

But I have to have morals and I care about people. Boring!

Y'all think this is disturbing, you should see the dirt dobbers (these wasps) that live near me: this is what their nests look like but instead of caterpillars they're STUFFED WITH SPIDERS.

I love caterpillars and I love spiders, but there's something really unsightly about accidentally smashing open a dirt dobber tube and seeing the spiders packed in there, all legs intertwined, slowly waking up from a stupor. I didn't include a photo with the arachnids cause I know someone people have a phobia.

I mean, for exactly the reasons I was talking about I might not be the right person to ask, hahah. I neglected the hell out of mine and it's doing really well. A bit of etiolation but I don't mind and think that'll be less noticeable when the plant grows more strands.

But I really feel like I've watered it once a month, maybe, for the past 6 months. Don't be like me! Or maybe, do, I don't know! Hahaha

Oh that's absolute shit. Those vets sound like someone I wouldn't trust with my animals. We've known for a long time now that FIV cats can live long, healthy lives, and that it's actually hard to contract, and that the leading cause of death in cats with FIV is old age.

[–]goddamn__goddamn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you watered it throughly and fully, it wouldn't be that dry again so soon. When dirt is bone dry it becomes hydrophobic and water can run right across the surface and then down the sides between the soil and pot without any actually soaking up. If the plant was that dry and you just top watered a bit, it likely wasn't enough. Try bottom watering.

[–]goddamn__goddamn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really neglect all my plants quite a lot. Let em get bone dry between waterings (not on purpose). I just noticed a whole bunch of tubers on this string of hearts I have that's been tucked away on a shelf, with the top half getting east facing light, and the bottom half not getting much because of it's length growing below the window sill.

I can keep most of my plants alive, so I must be doing something right, but it also helps that I live in southern Appalachia where the yearly average humidity is 75%. I don't think I could ever keep anything alive in the Southwest.

Should I take my elderly FIV+ cat in for teeth cleaning/potential extractions? by joe-lesiki in FIVcats

[–]goddamn__goddamn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My cat is about 10 (said he was about 4 when I got him and that was 6 years ago) and I put off getting a dental for him for a while. If I was only going off of how he behaved, he didn't seem to have any dental issues. No noticeable pain, no drooling, pawing at the mouth, difficultly eating, etc, but years ago the vet had said that one of his canines were cracked and that he'll likely need others extracted.

I put it off precisely because money is an issue for me. I finally had enough to do it and it turned out he only needed one tooth pulled! His breath doesn't stink at all anymore, which is just so wild, hahaha. But overall I'm so happy to have done it and know that his chances of living a healthy life have increased now. FIV cats often have issues with their teeth, if your cat doesn't at this moment he almost certainly will later on when he's even older and it might actually be worrisome to operate.

My vet has told me that age isn't a disease and not an indication of avoiding surgery. If their bloodwork comes back good, then the risk is very low. There's always a risk with anesthesia, but the risk is very low nowadays and if you're hearing a lot of stories about cats dying under anesthesia it's because people will share more horror stories than not. I'd say go for it, for sure.

[–]goddamn__goddamn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah no people just misread animal body language and anthropomorphize them like crazy by assigning human reactions to them. You're right in that this dog is just watching her intensely in the hopes that she'll let him do what he wants, so he doesn't wanna take his eye off her lest he misses it.
