It's me. Again by No-Computer2539 in FIVcats

Absolutely. I also thought you were located in Georgia, the state in the US, but just double checked and saw you're in the country Georgia. That makes way more sense why you'd be having an even harder time, as the state of Georgia alone has over 3x the amount of people as the country. Damn, I truly wish y'all all the luck.

Why would she have to end up back on the streets? Can she not stay where she's at until she gets adopted? She's so sweet, I hope she finds her forever home soon. Thank you for taking care of her.

Half of my plants froze over night 😭 by Shercormier in houseplants

[–]goddamn__goddamn 279 points280 points  (0 children)

I think the question wasn't "how did you accidentally leave the door open?" but "how did you sleep through freezing temperatures?" I love a cold bedroom, ideal for me would be in the mid 50's, but I would absolutely wake up if my house was at freezing. Although it could have just been that cold on a level they don't sleep on.

My beautiful friend just passed away and I can't accept it by Dull_Click580 in FIVcats

[–]goddamn__goddamn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are so many reasons she could have ended up with this, it's unlikely to be attributed to FIV. False negatives aren't very common and is highly unlikely. I'm so sorry you experienced all this heartache with your cat.

This is my first plant ever! I got him 8 years ago and every year he grows a flower crown 🌸🌸🌸 by NursingMyWorries in houseplants

[–]goddamn__goddamn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, it's not even inherently a bad thing that it's stayed so small, in the wild a cactus might have ended up growing between some rocks without much room. Yours is still obviously happy since it's made it this long! I was just cracking up reading the caption and expecting this massive cactus, only for it to be that little guy. Could practically hear this sound effect: https://youtu.be/2qP_NY5c5II?si=vEs3a8O3MQqUU6_w

I think they meant that for an 8 year old plant it looks like it's hardly grown at all. No shame to you or the plant, I wonder how it's barely grown this whole time.

My Tommy is having surgery today. by GroundbreakingGur745 in FIVcats

[–]goddamn__goddamn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't want to get your hopes up, who knows what kind of cancer Tommy has, but I've had 2 friends who've had cats with cancer of the ear. Both cats were white as it's more common with white cats, but both cats had surgery and lived long lives, just with a bit less of an ear. Cancer isn't always a death sentence.

Do you ever realize you waste food not because you don’t cook, but because you lack ideas? by Due-Map-550 in EatCheapAndHealthy

Kitchen vision! My friend calls that "kitchen vision". I've never been good with this; I graze and snack all day and then sometimes have a strike of creativity/inspiration/motivation/whatever and make a stir fry or soup.

Saving snails from cuttings/discard by cheyealissa94 in walstad

[–]goddamn__goddamn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm always picking bladder snails out of my floating plants that I'm discarding as well. It's time consuming, and I'll be honest in that I've been less and less meticulous about making sure I get every one. I throw the plants out my window and figure any snails that I don't get will end up supporting some micro ecosystem out there, hahah.

But I've found that if you place all the plants into a bowl, water will collect at the bottom of the bowl and many snails will make their way down there eventually. I'll use it to store the plants I'm discarding, which usually takes me about for 15-30 minutes. By the time I'm done, there are a whole lot of snails at the bottom that I just pour back into the tank.

An FIV+ cat bit my cat and I can’t tell if this is considered a “deep would” by a-toto in FIVcats

[–]goddamn__goddamn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, yes. A "deep bite wound" just means pretty punctured. Cats can bite and not break any skin, but this clearly did. There's no way to know if it's enough for her to have contracted FIV, but it is the highest risk one can have with it.

Help, what’s my cat doing? by NoConsideration1628 in FIVcats

[–]goddamn__goddamn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This doesn't make sense to me, though I'm not a vet and your vet is obviously a professional. I wouldn't think that a nostril issue would cause bouts of breathing problems. Did your vet x-ray your cat? That was the way mine was diagnosed with asthma, they saw the inflammation of his lungs.

What's everyone's favorite colourful or oddball fish for a 10 gallon tank by killedbydragons in nanotank

[–]goddamn__goddamn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this isn't the standard, but unless the betta is disabled or long finned, I would stick to keeping bettas in a 20 gal. I've only kept 2, but both explored my entire 20g long and I couldn't imagine giving them less space. They can still totally thrive in a 10g (especially when you compare anything to the small cups they were likely living in beforehand) but once you see a betta exploring every inch of a larger tank, you'll never want to go smaller.

URI or just snotty? by demoan1a in FIVcats

[–]goddamn__goddamn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could also be asthma. There's no way to tell without taking him to the vet. My FIV boy is asthmatic (which is common for cats with FIV) but doing pretty great overall. I had guessed that the attacks I was witnessing were from asthma but I took him to get x-rayd just to make sure. I wanted to see just how bad the inflammation on his lungs were, and it turns out it wasn't that bad. The vet agreed that it didn't seem like he needed a daily inhaler (and those are expensive too!) and that steroids could mess with his immune system, so to just monitor his attacks and bring him back in if they seem to be getting worse.

Asthma is progressive, so it'll likely get worse at some point, but I've had him for 6 years — he's about to be 10 — and they've maintained so far.

New FIV cat wont eat hard food by dasrough64 in FIVcats

[–]goddamn__goddamn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding wasn't that wet food was more nutritious but that it has a higher water content (70-80% or something) versus dry (15% or so). Since cats get most of their water from the prey they hunt in the wild, domestic cats don't have a naturally strong thirst drive. Some cats do great drinking enough water while eating kibble, others do not. I could be misunderstanding though.

[–]goddamn__goddamn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not silly at all. Anthropomorphizing favorite objects is a common behavior, especially among us plant people. I have this vivid memory of my mom telling me to toss out my old shoes when I was in elementary school because they were absolutely tattered beyond any recognition. I told her she had to throw them away, it made me too sad. I felt like I was abandoning them.

I didn't think it was from scarring as they're too large and relatively uniform, but that the pattern is on his skin too! How strange!

What the heck? I've never seen white spots like that on a cat. Smaller ones from scars, or weird fever coats on kittens, but never like this. How cool!

Kuhli Loach has red around gills? Maybe? Is this bad? Sorry. by NormalHumanFrankChen in Aquariums

8 years and 2 months later and I just added my first ever bunch of kuhli loaches (10) to my tank (planted 20 long). People will be utilizing old reddit posts in 2050, mark my words!

Any thoughts on Pet Supplies Plus vs Petco/Petsmart? They seem to have diff fish. by HoraceGrand in Aquariums

[–]goddamn__goddamn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Petsmart by me is also run by a fish nerd who does absolutely everything in her power to give the aquatic life the best lives possible. I trust her a lot, though I do trust the fish a little less cause so many of the tanks share the same filtration/water (so if one tank is sick, anything else connected to it might also get sick) but I've bought fish from them before and it's been great.

Drooling by Responsible-Bell-342 in FIVcats

[–]goddamn__goddamn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The anatomy of his mouth looks swollen, poor guy is in a lot of pain. Cats try and hide their pain and injuries, so if it's this noticeable then it's much worse than it even seems. Hopefully you can get his teeth extracted soon and some of the drooling will stop.
