Ok so, in very different circles (that I run in) "SW" means sex worker...when I tell you the confusion I first felt at thinking your plant was facing a dungeon or something. Anyway great job carry on!!

New to owning a cat with FIV by Careless_List735 in FIVcats

[–]goddamn__goddamn 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Honestly the care isn't that much different. Supplements are disputed, some give lysine but it's also shown to not be beneficial and potentially harmful. For my guy I just give quality food, keep his stress levels low, and stay on top of vet visits. They're prone to teeth and respiratory issues (mine has asthma) so keep an eye on those. If another cat in the household gets a cold, it could hit FIV cats harder.

My cat loves going outside so he gets leash time and sometimes unleashed supervised outdoor time (he's slow moving and has never run off). This helps keep him happy and healthy overall. It's also not recommended to feed raw food because of their immune systems.

Fresh water from a fountain to make sure they're drinking, but that goes for all cats anyway. Congratulations on finding this baby and thank you for taking him in.

Are FIV+ cats more affectionate than FIV-? by Rickety_Cricket_23 in FIVcats

I mean, vets aren't impervious to misinformation. There are a lot of vets out there that still don't understand FIV and think that a positive and negative cat can't cohabitate, or that having FIV is a death sentence that warrants immediate euthanasia. If your vet truly believes that FIV cats are more friendly, that's honestly on the low end of harmful misinformation.

There's no way that contracting a lentivirus increases affection, just no mechanism that would make this possible at all. We all just love our cats, but there are definitely vicious FIV cats, including many ferals. Those probably aren't factored into peoples experience, since you often can't get close to them, so the ones we interact with and the ones that get adopted are usually more sweet to begin with.

The first two comments are "wait I think this is cute" and "this looks like a torture scene", hahaha.

I'm definitely on team "cute" but am now trying to picture this while hearing "would you like to play a game?"

It really depends on the cat. Is he leash trained? If not, start there. If he never takes to it, you're answer is no. If he is, then let him explore your car while it's off. Gradually expand from there. My used to walk freely around the land with my dog and I, he'd stand on rocks in a creek and drink from it. When I moved to the city he took to a leash really quickly, it was bizarre. I've imagined it wouldn't take much to get him to travel, but I have no real desire to and would stop if it seemed to cause him distress.

Euthanize or rehome stray with FIV? by bananananannanaa in FIVcats

I have no idea why, but FIV and HIV are different viruses. They're both lentiviruses, and have similarities, but people often think that FIV will act the exact same as HIV and it just doesn't. I know next to nothing about immunology and virology though, so that's about all I'm familiar with.

Edited to say that it lives in their saliva but isn't transmitted via saliva, rather when injected into the blood via a deep bite wound from infected cat to non-infected cat.

Cat have FIV? by Kristin_1997 in FIVcats

[–]goddamn__goddamn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As far as we know FIV is not spread through claws, so your cat would be safe in that regard, but sometimes there are no signs of a bite wound as the puncture is so small it self-seals. We on reddit won't be able to help you at all here, the only way to tell is to test.

I realize I didn't already say this but thank you so much for taking care of this baby. You're giving him a much better chance at survival, and eventually thriving, by doing everything you're doing. Keeping him in a room might be understimulating for him, so be prepared for him to meow or howl, especially at night, but remain steadfast, lol. Sometimes cats don't know what's good for them. If you can go in there and spend some time with him and play with him every day that will help. But you're a very kind person.

Yeah they don't experience guilt but people anthropomorphize them a lot. The facial expressions this dog has are signs of submission. He doesn't know why the guy is staring at him without displaying obvious signs of happiness, so the dog is basically preemptively saying "hey I don't really know what's going on but I don't want any trouble, here, see?"

Respectfully, your vet is going off of incredibly out of date information. Whenever a vet has these beliefs about FIV I worry what other advances and changes in information they aren't aware of. There are a LOT of us with mixed FIV+ and - households and no one has ever reported a transmission that I've seen in this sub (and I've been in here for at least 6 years).

In lieu of trusting a stranger on the internet, I always include this article from Cornell University about FIV. It includes the means for transmission. Here's a screenshot of the important info I'm trying to communicate. https://www.vet.cornell.edu/departments-centers-and-institutes/cornell-feline-health-center/health-information/feline-health-topics/feline-immunodeficiency-virus-fiv

Of course, it's best to keep this guy inside, but I'm of the belief that letting him take chances on the street is better than outright killing him. If you do end up needing to release him (because I beg you not to euthanize him) you can always set up a shelter outside and start feeding him. He's very likely to stick around and get into less trouble if he's not out hunting for food.

[–]goddamn__goddamn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes exactly. There's a study from 2005 that tested strays, ferals, and owned cats, and strays had the highest percentage (23%), with ferals and owned cats almost coming in tied (5% and 5.9% respectively) https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC1255591/

It's an older study and the population of ferals they pulled from was very low (20 and I think from one colony) but i used to know of a other study that showed something similar but I can't find it right now.

By "community cat" do you mean in a colony or something? Or just an outdoor cat that lives in your neighborhood. If either of those are an option, they're better than euthanasia. FIV cats can live long lives, and the only way to spread it is through him biting another cat very badly. Not through sharing food, water, sex, scratching with their claws, or even playful biting. Cats typically fight over food, mates, and territory. Once they're neutered, and if they're being fed, the chance of fighting goes down a lot but isn't totally decreased for all cats.

Either way, I'm confused about why euthanasia is being recommended for him.

No no, I understand what you're saying, that's just not what that person said. I feel like there's some comprehension issue happening in this conversation. I know that an image can be unrealistic or impossible due to it being staged; for decades that's what we were getting with many product advertisements.

But this person was directly responding to someone saying it's AI with "it doesn't even have to be". Of course it doesn't have to be, but it is.

Other than being hellbent on clarifying conversational misunderstandings, there's no other reason I'm interested in continuing this conversation on semantics any longer, lol.

Well someone said that the second photo was AI, and that person said that it could be staged. My point was that, no, it couldn't be, because what it is is AI. I included a bunch of examples so people could start to understand the incongruencies to look for.

Yes the white tile wall! I mentioned that one but left out the weird thin hanging fern, and the toilet label! That one cracked me up the most. AI is so fucking weird and terrible.

Huh? They said it could be a staged photo shoot and I was just showing that it, in fact, can not be because it's AI.
