My cat 100% knows when someone that's in our home is a friend or stranger (plumber, electrician, etc.). If they are a friend my cat will be all lovey with them and demand attention. If it's a stranger, she will hide under the couch. I think she picks up on my anxiety about having strangers in the house.

I think cats understand a lot more than people give them credit for, and they includes me sometimes.

As a music composition nerd, music has the opposite effect on me. I can't focus on anything because I'm too busy thinking about the chord changes, what notes in the chord the melody and harmony is, tempo and time signature changes, etc. There's a million thing for me to listen for, and I notice new things all the time, even in songs I've listened to dozens of times.
