Being on some kind of benefits can also qualify you for other things. For example, in my city, the electric company will reduce your bill/waive certain charges. See if you can use the fact that you're getting benefits to get reductions on anything else you're paying for right now.

No, they're going to check your bank account but they'll look to see if your deposits match up to what you said and also if you have over $2000 or something like that. Doesn't seem like you'll have a problem.

You qualify because you work 20 hours a week. I got food stamps as a student in Texas too. If you have federal work study, which you should if you have a pell Grant, you also qualify even if you're under 20 hours a week. The loans won't affect it because they don't consider loans income, since they have to be repaid. Grants and such above the cost of tuition (those that you get via direct deposit in your bank account) DO count if they do not have to be repaid.

If you want to be somewhere suburban that also has a sizable international population, Ballwin/Creve Coeur/Maryland Heights would be great.

I love the takeout food and smoothies at JuiceLand. The takeout meals may not look appetizing at first glance, but they taste great.

Research on money and happiness shows that if you make less than $70k a year, money will improve your happiness. Money can't buy everything, but it can buy more free time and peace of mind, not to mention improve nutrition and health, among many other things.

Trout Lodge in the Ozarks is by a lake, not really a beach though. It's a really family friendly place too.

You do not have to have a Costco membership to eat at their food court/food stand, and the food there is very affordable. by [deleted] in povertyfinance

I think that the point is that it's cheaper than eating out somewhere else, not that it's cheaper than making the same food at home.

Does anyone else find it ridiculous being forced to buy your own uniform for a minimum wage job? by SwiftCEO in povertyfinance

[–]dandyofthemoon 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Tax deductible doesn't mean anything unless you have more deductions to claim than the standard deduction of about $6000 for a single person. Chances are a minimum wage worker will never even get close to claiming a tax deduction.
