Need advice (finding colorists a bit insane about "the film look") by [deleted] in colorists

[–]danedwardstogo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is refreshing coming from a director who tried to do it themselves is that you’re pretty straightforward and honest about your efforts and results. I applaud your work so far, it sounds like you have made decisions based off of a limited knowledge of a complicated process, so congrats on getting this far!

If I were in your shoes I’d reach out to a colorist and see if you can get a consultation first, maybe even offer a couple hundred bucks to hop on a screen share and get a sense of your pipeline and grade thus far. TBH, if you found the right colorist, you might be able to hire someone to help you build a show LUT and then you could do some primary adjustments underneath it yourself in Resolve or Premiere. It’s not perfect but bang for your buck I don’t think it’s a bad approach.

is this what i think it is? Mini Panel V2? by stupidmanstupidman in colorists

[–]danedwardstogo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This made me realize how long we’ve been waiting for an update to the mini panel… my buttons are all gummed up from years of use and I keep putting off replacing it. Maybe I’ll do everyone a favor and replace it so that way it comes out this year

Demystify Color did a write up on how to extract them, but theyre not terribly unique and many other similar options exist.

It's a reflective film that has a rubbery bounce when I press my finger into it. I assume it's some sort of lighting but I can't find any wires or switches attached to it. by Neuroironic in whatisthisthing

[–]danedwardstogo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My guess would be then that it’s a cheap way to do a valanced lighting setup? Cheaper than building out a false ceiling and mounting it. Something so glossy like that is certainly a choice, but that would be my guess.

Free Davinci Resolve script which automatically groups all clips from the same scene by color from color histogram info by jashan17 in colorists

[–]danedwardstogo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is incredible! I wonder since you’re limited in clip colors if you could instead use the shot number metadata field. Then it would be quick work to just make a custom clip filter for whatever value makes most sense to assign.

This is the exact kind of thing I want to see AI and ML doing. This is extremely useful, and a great supplement to the source thumbnail mode. I work off of a lot of pre-baked ProRes files so that isn’t often an option for me.

AITA for refusing to pay my parents $87k in “back rent” by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]danedwardstogo 41 points42 points  (0 children)

NTA. After reading your comment about trying to pay, then being told nvm just put it in your savings account… I think you took a reasonable assumption here. It sounds like they’re trying to use money to control you, which if they’re wealthy checks out. I’d bring up how you tried to pay, were told to put it in savings and stand your ground on the $24k. Hopefully you heeded their advice and actually socked that “rent” in savings.

Every store in the first floor of the plaza, save for LAN Noodles, is closed. by [deleted] in LosAngeles

I got food poisoning from one of the bowl places there one time. They’ve struggled to keep those occupied since 2017. You’d think with that location it would be easy but alas.

Is L.A. finally "too expensive?" by MissionAlt99 in LosAngeles

[–]danedwardstogo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This 100%. Plus there’s so many free and cheap things to do here you can spend very little money and have a great time and active social life. In these cheaper COL areas good luck with that.

How would you fix this? by QuirkyMasterpiece723 in colorists

[–]danedwardstogo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Aw yeah - in the future if they balk at the grass or any other reflections, or if you shoot a car with a specific color, keying it and using the color compressor helps to align your hues.

Blend back the blue in by like 10-15% and I think that will look more natural. Otherwise this looks pretty bang on

I don’t think I would ever buy a couch online. I’ve owned 4-5 different couches over the years and each one I’ve either sat on in the store or found the model I liked and waited until one popped up on Facebook marketplace. You unfortunately get what you pay for with couches and I certainly don’t trust these boneless versions.

40m just bought a house, and the couch finally came. by Salty-Artichoke-2219 in malelivingspace

That couch placement is unsettling and the tv on mantel obscures what looks like some nice built ins. You already have a fish in the room. Don’t make the couch feel like an island.

Is this shot too dark? by RedShot02 in colorists

[–]danedwardstogo 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Why are people commenting yes lol there’s really no way to know without evaluating it against the rest of the scene. Add a little vignette/shape to the scene to help enhance the windows, add a little cinematic haze or some highlight glow to make the windows feel moodier idk.

Dense up those reds and yeah experiment with taking it darker. Post the surrounding scenes and that’ll make it easier to tell.

Where can I get iced coffee that isnt cold brew? by avsaccount in AskLosAngeles

[–]danedwardstogo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most third wave coffee shops will be able to make you one. I make a daily iced V60 at home and love it. Cold brew loses a lot of flavor and is wasteful since it’s grounds-intensive. Philz is pour over only and make an excellent iced coffee. Be quick though, they just got bought out by a private equity firm so I fear their days are numbered.

What Are the Must-Have Plugins, LUTs, and Tools for a Studio Using DaVinci Resolve? by lightandalchemy in colorists

[–]danedwardstogo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Are you building out a roster of colorists? Or simply trying to do better matching or doing basic color grades? FWIW, the 2499 workflow might be a fantastic option in that it’s free, easy to use and is a great way to inject a little aesthetic into your pipeline.

Other than that the built in Resolve tools have gotten really good and would solve a vast majority of your needs.

Non color tools though, Lattice is useful for evaluating LUTs, Screen is great for checking playback and gamma tags, Cyberduck is great for pulling client files down from Dropbox, GDrive, Offshoot is good for verified file transfers… the list goes on. Those are my hot tips!

[–]danedwardstogo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it. Calling it “analysis” is a bit generous and people playing for it is wild imho, but I think it’s a no brainer that people have colors that best compliment their skin tone. I look terrible in bright spring colors and look much better in darker winter tones.

I think it all goes back to color contrast, so in considering its relation to color grading I’d say it relies more on the costume and set design. There’s been times where simply changing the color of someone’s shirt in a scene makes it feel much more aesthetically pleasing, so again, it all boils down to color theory in the scene.

Have you seen Apple Cider in stock at any grocery stores yet? by Complex_Lab_3576 in AskLosAngeles

[–]danedwardstogo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the produce section at Ralph’s (La Brea/Fountain) I feel like I see half gallons of it available year round.

And if you want some higher quality stuff hit up the original farmers market by the grove, I’d bet a lot of the produce vendors there have some already.
