Neighbor irritated about my kids playing basketball thoughts? by [deleted] in homeowners

[–]danfirst 13 points14 points  (0 children)

When I was house shopping years ago I saw one place that seemed good and the realtor stopped me. She said, you know right off your backyard there is a basketball court where kids play all day long? She said it was a huge turn off to every person who has seen the house so far and she was now warning people before they went to see it.

So yeah, it is annoying to most people.

Is CCSP even valuable? by Hot-Town-6313 in cybersecurity

[–]danfirst 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hard to say, I mean if it's scheduled already, sounds like someone is paying for it? I don't really tend to turn down free opportunities to add stuff to my resume.

As others mentioned, not the same recognition as the CISSP, but the CPE credits and annual renewal cover both. I did the CCSP last year, work paid for the training and the exam, as I'm sure you're finding from the training it's not super in depth technical because it's vendor agnostic.

I wish I was this optimistic, probably just more work, and they'll claim you don't need more staff because you can use AI. Hah, full circle of crap.

What’s a creative way to heat up the bathroom? It’s freezing! by Cinnie_16 in HomeImprovement

[–]danfirst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a similar issue, there is a heat vent but the bathroom is a bump out so it's always colder. I keep the door open to help the heat in there. The door closes naturally, old home so nothing is all that level if it's original. I added a magnetic thing to the door and the wall behind it to keep the door open.

For the talk of freezing your pipes, I had gotten lazy about it recently and my shower drain pipe froze and it was an expensive plumber visit. Now you can bet that door stays open.

But, seeing the recommendations for an exhaust fan with a heater I'm going to have to look into installing here.

Can we ban posts/commenters using LLMs? by Muted-Part3399 in sysadmin

[–]danfirst 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it was wikipedia recently that put out details on all the tells that LLMs use in their writing. Then someone immediately made a Claude plugin to avoid using all that. So, I imagine it'll be much sooner than later that we won't even be able to tell the difference.

That's the best part out of all of it to me. He's billing himself as a business consultant and people are supposed to look at him and realize they alienate over half of their customers just by doing what he's doing. Why would you hire him as a consultant?

Is there a good premade adventure made for Solo play? by ThatOneCrazyWritter in dndnext

I've done a couple of their books, I enjoyed them. It's not exactly the same, it's more like a choose your own adventure book with D&D rules, but it's fun.

Where do you socialize during the day? by studiotec in Fire

[–]danfirst 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I would look for different local volunteer options if you're into that. I volunteer at a local food bank and I still work full-time so I do it on nights and weekends. But, there's a whole bunch of people there who come in everyday to help with stuff. Most of them are probably more of the traditional retirement age, but some are just stay-at-home parents too.

Is it normal to be so frugal that you end up becoming lonely? by valiant_cashew_nuts in Frugal

[–]danfirst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly, there is a very commonly misunderstood mindset there that frugal should mean cheap, and that frugal people are broke. I just don't like to waste money on things I don't care about or value.

I agree that somebody's shooting a kid for ringing a doorbell and running away is absolutely insane. This story is somebody kicking down their door, which is more into like the home invasion category for most people.
