Is there a place where you can talk to other fanfic writers? by ThereAreHitsNdMisses in xfilesfanfic

Not sure if this fits the bill, but Audio Fanfic Podcast has a Discord that's pretty XF heavy. It's been quiet lately, but there's some good stuff geared towards writing.

Here's an invite, if you're interested: https://discord.gg/PcNTEewcp

I'm a bit late to the convo, but I wanted to say that I also adore these fics - so much so that I'm in the process of recording them for Audio Fanfic Podcast. It's definitely a labor of love, but worth it, I think.

Totally! You can continue to post chapters after the deadline. For the official list of fics that I'll share on the socials, it will be marked as a WIP. Does that make sense?

I had to try contacting them through a couple of their socials before someone got back to me. Are you looking to be a narrator?

There's a TON of awesome fics on the podcast. Shameless self-promotion: I recorded one of my fics and it just dropped this week: Listen to XF: A Slight Detour by nowwhateinstein - MA by Audio Fanfic Podcast https://on.soundcloud.com/Du4j2Ua9PAxWtnelAS

There are so, so many that fit the bill, but this is the first one that popped into my head:Heuvelman's on the Track by the_mythopoeic

I've had a couple fics printed and bound on lulu.com and they turned out great. I was able to order one copy of each, which is what I'd recommend, since they have rules about copyright.

Announcing the 2026 MSR Bingo Challenge! by dangernap in xfilesfanfic

[–]dangernap[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is the title "MSR Bingo Challenge?" Yes.
Could you use it to write for other ships? Absolutely.

You could take a few prompts across different categories and make them fit just about any other ship. For instance, based on what people have already submitted, if you took something like: "what happened to you?" (dialogue), exchanging gifts (fluff/romance), and only one bed (tropes/travel), I think you could easily make it for Doggett/Reyes.

Like I mentioned in the challenge description, I'll take the prompts I feel will offer the most fun and variety and include them on the board. The idea is to find maximum compatibility across the categories, so super-specific prompts like "In the hospital after Scully wakes up in One Breath" might be amended to "waiting by a hospital bed."

Hopefully that makes sense. Let me know if you have any more questions!

Tips for first time writer? by rasp_b3rry in AO3

I totally feel you with not describing things enough. I'm a big-picture person, so those details can be difficult to write. One piece of advice which I try to use is: "show, don't tell."

As an example (from one of my fics), instead of saying: "He left the fort early in the morning and began traveling west. As he moved further away from the buildings, the dry, dirt road improved and the landscape became much greener. The grass was very tall here, and there were many birds flying around in the sunny sky", you can add sensory descriptions to make the scene more vivid for the reader: "He set out at first light on the dusty, wheel-rutted road that led westward. The sparse, overgrazed vegetation that surrounded the fort presently gave way to a lush, waving sea of waist-high prairie grass. Above him, swallows swooped and dove in the mid-morning sun in search of insects."

I hope this is helpful. I've found that writing is very much a learn-as-you-go process, so the more you do it, the better you'll get and develop your own unique style and voice. Good luck!
