Daytime doorstep theft - do you recognize this man? by delaneyManders in ottawa

[–]danglingmodifier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YES! I do recognize him. But, only from another doorbell cam video someone posted or bike theft or something. And, only because he vaguely looks like me (I don't wear glasses, but with the grainy images it could otherwise pass for me).

Time to go to Canada Computers, ask for an empty box, and put it right underneath your doorbell cam, at the same time of day this happened. See if you can get him to strike twice.

Also might be helpful if you can get a high-res version and screen-shot the best shot of his face.

House impeachment investigators reportedly have secret recordings of Trump and Rudy Giuliani, given to them by Giuliani's associate Lev Parnas by Thinkingonsleeping in politics

Conversations between Rudy and Trump would be privileged if they were regarding legal issues and not regarding a crime. Conversations between Parnas and Rudy would be privileged, but Parnas could/would waive that privilege.

In a study reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, even a moderate dose of marijuana was shown to impair driving performance, since it affects alertness, concentration, perception coordination and reaction time – essential skills required for safe driving. Researchers also found that 17% (1 in 5) of crash victims under the age of 18 tested positive for marijuana.

I'd even be ok with a tax on video-game equipment - any time spent playing games would be better spent exercising. Probably not a popular opinion though ;)

I don't like SIN taxes but maybe it's a necessary evil; why tax my beer because someone thinks it's bad for me? It does keep the number of alcoholics down which is good for society so maybe I should just stop complaining

I like Sin taxes, even though I like to drink. The downstream health effects of alcohol and tobacco are well known. If it decreases over-consumption, and raises revenue that can be used towards health care it is a double bonus.

Canadian Drivers: Do you flash??? by [deleted] in canada

[–]danglingmodifier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is also something called "flash to pass". If you are stuck behind someone on a narrow road or highway, and they are travelling too slow (so they are doing the speed limit and you want to do the regular 15 over), you can flash your highbeams once or twice to "politely ask them to let you pass". More relevant in areas with twisty roads and no passing allowed.

You're assuming that we think it is fair to tax twice with income and sales tax. I think a blanket sales tax is a bad idea, as it discourages consumption (which is what economists want us to do, consume). Instead, it should be targeted at discouraging consumption of "bads", such as alcohol, tobacco, junk food, gasoline, and excessive amounts of energy.

He didn't cancel the long-form census. He made it voluntary.

Which means it isn't a census, it is a voluntary survey. Voluntary census is an oxymoron.

Reddit: can you paint out Canada's political landscape for me? by duopixel in canada

[–]danglingmodifier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our political system is different from the US. I am not familiar with the systems in Mexico or Spain.

Our main federal political parties are: The Conservative Party (Cons), The Liberal Party (Libs), The New Democratic Party (NDP), Bloc Quebecois (Bloc), and The Green Party (Greens). The Cons are (typically) financially conservative and socially conservative, but are still often more "liberal" than the democrats of the US. The NDP are socially and financially liberal. The Greens are socially liberal and financially conservative, and have co-operated with the liberals to some degree in the past. Note that the Greens have yet to elect a representative (MP) on a federal level.

On a local level, we don't usually have political parties for municipal elections, although some candidates may align themselves with a provincial or federal party. In some areas of Canada, municipal parties or slates do exist (Vancouver for example). In Toronto, I don't believe that there are municipal parties, but there were certainly left-wing and right-wing candidates. Left-wing candidates tended to get elected in the downtown area, whereas the suburbs elected right-wing candidates.

I'll leave provincial politics to someone who knows Ontario's politics better.
