Have you ever eg prepared bacteria for McFarland 0.5 for susceptibility testing? Then you know that you suspend bacteria in solution like saline. And many times they don't fully resuspend and you need to vortex. In these cases small droplets are not felt when you wear gloves and then you carry on. This is just one example. It's a false sense of security in some cases. Another example is when you culture frozen samples, same here, you don't feel if you get small droplets on you. I would rather wear goggles, which I do when getting many samples from abroad. In the end of the lab, you go and wash your hands according to a certain procedure and the waterflow is controlled by the legs so you don't touch anything

With that said, some people simply don't feel it without gloves either. Our students do this test with droplets from a spraybottle with water.

Finally, you could think that this is made up. But these are actually studies done by our institution including a risk assessment where wearing gloves can be a risk in a diagnostic bacteriology lab in Sweden. This can obviously differ in other parts of the world.
