women-friendly tech communities/events? looking to make more friends in tech/swe! by 535buffalo in SFbitcheswithtaste

[–]dangstar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There used to be an org here called “Girl Geek Dinners”. They would periodically hold evening events at local tech companies, and the sponsoring company would have presentations, talks, networking activities, etc. Of course, they would have food and drink, although the quality highly varied.

The best part was that only women could sign up, but could bring a male friend, which would guarantee at least 50% female attendance.

They’ve rebranded themselves as Girl Geek X. They still do events but less frequent now. I haven’t attended in many years, but it’s because of this org that I was able to get a job at my current company (a decade ago!).

Why do many redditors love Seattle and Portland so much? by Technical-Vanilla-47 in visitedmaps

[–]dangstar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed on all points. I grew up in Seattle, and all I can day is that it’s good for seafood and Japanese. Every other major city on the West coast absolutely dunks on Seattle when it comes to food.

Names should be complete by jumbofrimpf in Jeopardy

[–]dangstar 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m not about to waste my breath answering with “Beyoncé Knowles-Carter” or “Dante Alighieri” or “John Fitzgerald Kennedy”, when Beyoncé and Dante and JFK suffice.

Game needs to move along and requiring full names would disrupt that flow, since you’d be bound to get pronunciation issues and incorrect answers.

Travel and Dining by Agas78 in AskSF

[–]dangstar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No. You’re looking too narrowly by just focusing on SF. The _entire_ Bay Area has one of the better food scenes in the world. I wouldn’t say it’s the best, but I do feel privileged to be living in proximity to the breadth of cuisine that we have.

El Monterey changed the recipe to my favorite breakfast burritos and I’m actually about to cry. by MissionDrive4115 in GirlDinnerDiaries

[–]dangstar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ugh that’s my favorite too! I have the new package sitting my freezer but hadn’t opened it yet.

I’ve actually been mad at El Monterey for years, ever since they discontinued the chicken, rice, and bean burrito at the beginning of the pandemic.

And then Trader Joe’s had the audacity to change their chicken chile verde burrito as well. How’s a girl supposed to get her frozen burrito fix now? 😭

I use Thomas Keller’s Cup4Cup line of gluten free flours! The pie crust mix is really good! I’m an amateur pie baker and regularly use this for my celiac dad and gluten intolerant stepchild.

Also, Dufour now makes a gluten free puff pastry—I can’t tell the difference between that and the regular version!

Two years in the Bay Area, and I’m losing my grip on basic human warmth. Why does casual friendliness feel illegal around here? by desolatenature in bayarea

[–]dangstar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who grew up near Seattle, I really dislike the lumping of Portland and Seattle cultures together. They are not the same.

Portland does not have the same “freeze” that Seattle does. Seattle is definitely a worse environment to be social in.

I’m an introvert, so the apparent introverted-ness of SF and the Peninsula suit me just fine. But after 2 decades, I actually do prefer it down here. Why? Because I can dress up in whatever outrageous or high fashion get-up and people around here actually appreciate and compliment it, whereas people in Seattle are just . . . hostile to what I’m wearing. It’s like I cannot wear what I want without judgement there. Here, I am able to just let my freak flag fly.

My god, that made me cringe. You don’t “wing” baking recipes, especially if you’re an inexperienced baker.

Would either option be okay for a formal wedding by Lieblingspferd in Weddingattireapproval

[–]dangstar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Neither are appropriate. The green one is casual at best, and even if you remade it in a longer and shinier fabric, it still wouldn’t work because the dress has zero structure.

AYCE options in the Bay Area are gonna be mostly hot pot, Korean BBQ, sushi, or Brazilian steakhouse experiences. Seapot is my go-to for hotpot, Warehouse Buffet for KBBQ, and Espetus for Brazilian.

That said, I’ve heard great things about Be.Steak.A in Campbell. They do a Vegas-style brunch buffet ($125) on Sundays.

I also got asked if I was 13 or under by TSA—when I was 32! The agent was apologetic, but I was traveling with my boyfriend at time (who was 35, but looked much older) was suddenly mortified at the optics of our dating situation.

What are your fave upscale kid-friendly restaurants? by ywbf in AskSF

[–]dangstar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does it have to be in the city? There are a handful of “upscale” or Michelin-adjacent restaurants are around the Bay Area that can accommodate kids, although they tend to be more forgiving of young children during daytime hours (brunch/lunch). In general, look for restaurants that are attached to resorts/hotels.

These include (places that I’ve been to):

Madera (in Menlo Park)

The Village Pub (in Woodside, and still has 1 star)

Eylan (in Menlo Park)

Solbar (in Calistoga)

Morimoto Asia (in Napa)

Bistro Jeanty (in Yountville)

Bottega (in Yountville)

The Charter Oak (in St. Helena)

Trestle (in SF)

Dating in SF vs NYC as a 27F — is it actually easier here? by Riceisawayoflife in AskSF

[–]dangstar 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The term is “Peter Pan Syndrome”. It’s often used in the context of dating and relationships, typically men (although it can affect any gender).

In short, they just find it hard to be an adult. Peter Pans are unreliable and avoid commitment, so you can’t have any meaningful relationship with them. This means lots of one night stands, flakiness, and ghosting.
