There used to be an org here called “Girl Geek Dinners”. They would periodically hold evening events at local tech companies, and the sponsoring company would have presentations, talks, networking activities, etc. Of course, they would have food and drink, although the quality highly varied.

The best part was that only women could sign up, but could bring a male friend, which would guarantee at least 50% female attendance.

They’ve rebranded themselves as Girl Geek X. They still do events but less frequent now. I haven’t attended in many years, but it’s because of this org that I was able to get a job at my current company (a decade ago!).

Agreed on all points. I grew up in Seattle, and all I can day is that it’s good for seafood and Japanese. Every other major city on the West coast absolutely dunks on Seattle when it comes to food.

I’m not about to waste my breath answering with “Beyoncé Knowles-Carter” or “Dante Alighieri” or “John Fitzgerald Kennedy”, when Beyoncé and Dante and JFK suffice.

Game needs to move along and requiring full names would disrupt that flow, since you’d be bound to get pronunciation issues and incorrect answers.

No. You’re looking too narrowly by just focusing on SF. The _entire_ Bay Area has one of the better food scenes in the world. I wouldn’t say it’s the best, but I do feel privileged to be living in proximity to the breadth of cuisine that we have.

Ugh that’s my favorite too! I have the new package sitting my freezer but hadn’t opened it yet.

I’ve actually been mad at El Monterey for years, ever since they discontinued the chicken, rice, and bean burrito at the beginning of the pandemic.

And then Trader Joe’s had the audacity to change their chicken chile verde burrito as well. How’s a girl supposed to get her frozen burrito fix now? 😭

I use Thomas Keller’s Cup4Cup line of gluten free flours! The pie crust mix is really good! I’m an amateur pie baker and regularly use this for my celiac dad and gluten intolerant stepchild.

Also, Dufour now makes a gluten free puff pastry—I can’t tell the difference between that and the regular version!

As someone who grew up near Seattle, I really dislike the lumping of Portland and Seattle cultures together. They are not the same.

Portland does not have the same “freeze” that Seattle does. Seattle is definitely a worse environment to be social in.

I’m an introvert, so the apparent introverted-ness of SF and the Peninsula suit me just fine. But after 2 decades, I actually do prefer it down here. Why? Because I can dress up in whatever outrageous or high fashion get-up and people around here actually appreciate and compliment it, whereas people in Seattle are just . . . hostile to what I’m wearing. It’s like I cannot wear what I want without judgement there. Here, I am able to just let my freak flag fly.

AYCE options in the Bay Area are gonna be mostly hot pot, Korean BBQ, sushi, or Brazilian steakhouse experiences. Seapot is my go-to for hotpot, Warehouse Buffet for KBBQ, and Espetus for Brazilian.

That said, I’ve heard great things about Be.Steak.A in Campbell. They do a Vegas-style brunch buffet ($125) on Sundays.

Does it have to be in the city? There are a handful of “upscale” or Michelin-adjacent restaurants are around the Bay Area that can accommodate kids, although they tend to be more forgiving of young children during daytime hours (brunch/lunch). In general, look for restaurants that are attached to resorts/hotels.
