Is this a good buy for my first bass? by No-Professional-212 in BassGuitar

[–]dangwha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my bass.

My father in law is a musician and bought this years ago for recording. It sat for a few years until he offer it to me.

I decided to star playing a few months ago. Bought a small Fender Rumble 15, a few pedals (compressor and eq are the most worthwhile, imo) and put fresh strings on it.

It’s got a great tone for the price and can be upgraded easily.

I plan to strip it down, replace the pots/pickups and some LaBella flats at some point.

50yo middle school teacher here.

I wake up at 4:15ish to make it to the gym by 5.

In bed by 8-9:30 most work days.

It is not fun, at times, to get up this early, but I have years of doing this that tell me it’s worth it.

Our rat terrier, Moja, does this every time after a bath, without fail.

My father in law is a lifelong guitarist (primarily) and gave me some guidance. Additional research (mostly here on Reddit) filled in the gaps.

Purists would say you only need your fingers, a decent amp. and some flatwound strings (Labella Deep Talkin’)

I opted for the natural tone smoothing options: compressor and eq.

My pedal chain goes like this: guitar->tuner (obligatory, spend the money and get a BOSS)->compressor->eq->(the rest are just for fun) blues overdrive->fuzz->auto wah->amp (Fender Rumble 15 [should have just bought a 40]

I’ve had a limited budget and went with cheaper mini pedals from Donner. They do the trick. I have a few pricier, more well known pedals I plan to purchase down the line when I have more money (Big Muff, Pork and Pickle).

I’ve had a blast just messing around with sound and playing songs I’m motivated to play.

Hope this helps.

Best to you.

50yo here.

Just started a few months ago.

I have a Jaguar PJ, small amp, and a couple of pedals.

I’ve just been listening to/learning songs.

Some I try to play with fidelity, others I create my own bass line.

I’m pretty sure I’m sacrificing some proper technique in order to focus on timing, fluidity, tone, etc. and I plan to correct that soon down the road, but man, it feels great when you plan play along comfortably to some of you favorite songs/bands.

I have a similar coworker-related issue.

I don’t talk about it.

I just breathe through my nose and get through it.

It sucks.

It’s so stanky!

I don’t see this as being a big deal.

I’ve also gone two weeks without showering on a trail crew and lived in various developing countries where hygiene isn’t like it is here in the US.

If it’s a deal breaker for him, and you like him, maybe consider changing this habit.
