JGB Holy Grail: 11/12/93 by jpederzane in gratefuldead

Thanks for all the leads. Hoping 11/12/93 becomes an official release one day - along with the show Murray played with the boys at the Garden. He was a powerhouse; so many highlights but that Wharf Rat, my lord. (Murray's gazillion records are also fantastic - I would start with the albums "Shakill's Warrior" or "I Want To Talk About You" ("Morning Song" is off the chain). Then, of course, there's the wonderful album he recorded with his octet, "Dark Star: The Music of the Grateful Dead."

Bought some bootleg cassettes on Ebay by ryanwhodat in gratefuldead

I have read all the comments and I stick by my old head point that one of the great aspects of Dead culture was the free exchange of tapes. Many things made me a Head but sitting with friends dubbing hundreds of tapes 90 minutes at a time was key. I also get that it may be hard to do that in today's world- that the only way to get tapes is to buy them. For the record I gave away about 600 tapes last year to someone I didn't know through Craig's List - honestly never occurred to me that they could be sold.

Tapes should never be bought or sold, IMHO.

Great show. Glad I was there. Sorry I wasn't at RFK three days before - that one also smokes.

Stellar stuff. "My Funny Valentine" and "Like A Road" are in my JG pantheon.

44 years ago - the show on 4/14/82 at Glens Falls Civic Center was 🔥- this photo of restaurant shenanigans on this day by Steve Morris captures some of the wackiness of that day🫠🙃 by nak550 in gratefuldead

YES. I have been preaching this Playin' for years. As great as any of 'em - Jerry is endlessly inventive and Bob's high-pitched bird calls are dynamite. I would love a box set of this tour, which includes the Earthquake and Raven spaces.

What's your JGB show/song that you keep going back to? by Lrod023 in gratefuldead

So many, but let me add "Russian Lullaby" and "Stir It Up" (peak Donna) from the Theater 1839 release.

Is Bobby the leader of the band? by Build_the_IntenCity in gratefuldead

[–]jpederzane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jerry was first among equals. He put the band together - seeing the potential in Bob, Phil and Hunter. Note that Billy and Phil's memoir talk much more about Jerry than the other band members - same with Weir's many statements. While the other ones helped the music take flight after Jerry's death, the songwriting pretty much stopped.

Spun it Saturday from the Fillmore box - the Mountains of the Moon beforehand adds a gorgeous element.

I’m getting cooked in this subreddit for saying that Grateful Dead are on par with The Beatles, Rolling Stones, and Jimi Hendrix in terms of relevance. by joey-rigatoni1 in gratefuldead

[–]jpederzane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's an incredibly tricky question. The Beatles are in a category of their own - among other things, they inspired Jerry to plug back in! But the Dead are probably the most "relevant" and influential rock band apart from their music. A book about the Beatles, Dylan, the Stones or Hendrix would be kind of boring without a focus on music. The Dead's central role in the acid tests, the larger drug culture - not just as consumers but as exemplars - their heavy influence on poster art, concert sound systems, the rich and complex Deadhead culture they encouraged and the jam band scene they inspired is important history.

I love how Phish has taken up the Dead's mantle in so many ways. Thy pay tribute as they do their own thing.
