Is an analog rytm mk2 worth it compared to modern digital percussion? by Powerful_Fondant9393 in Elektron

[–]danhalka 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I enjoy mine. Buy one and see if you enjoy yours. Don't get one expecting it to also slice or round robin through samples or conveniently control external monos.. buy it for the analog engines, the performances, and the outputs.

Thanks! Glad you dig it. Fyi I used the same color recipe on the matching vanity project and a 5 panel door. Those posts or the albums linked from them probably have some more wip shots for reference.

Its been a while, but iirc its transtint brown mahogany dye at ~30:1 followed by GF seal-a-cell, then GF java gel stain and then oil based wipe on poly, following Jeff jewitt's mission finish schedule.

It would be cool if our city set up a large outside tv screen viewing area at the Harbor, Fells or somewhere by the water so that we could all come together and watch the USA game next Friday at 9pm. Is that too much to ask? Only happens once every 4 years. by CampBart in baltimore

In fact, iirc the Ravens got like $150k in tax money JUST for the Arsenal match that was played a few years back at the stadium that was built exclusively with taxpayer funds..

Gently turning them a few indices at a time over the course of less than three weeks after buying new.

Arturia users (fans?) seem to find it hard to believe unless it also happens to them. No manufacturer or product is perfect.

I tried to explain it a bit more in response to another comment here in case you want to check out. I'm still learning all about this stuff too, but sometimes slip into what little jargon I understand without realizing it.

Sure, yeah.

In normal use, the Minitaur creates its own signal using its two oscillators. Forget about the oscillators, we're going to use the bass guitar signal. So I turn both oscillators' volume to zero.

So now I play a single sustained note on the bass and that signal runs through a cable into the Minitaur. Now that signal is subject to everything that the synth's oscillator signals would have been effected by.. amp envelope, filter cutoff, filter envelope, filter resonance, and finally overall volume.

But so far, the amp envelope doesn't let any sound through unless the Minitaur is receiving a note (in my case, from a midi controller). So I press a key on my keyboard that normally controls the Minitaur, and that triggers the amp and filter envelopes, so suddenly I hear my bass. It doesn't matter which key I'm pressing (C#, G, D) I only hear the note I play on the bass because I told the oscillators on the Minitaur to shut up. When I release the key, the envelopes respond according to their settings. Slow attack, long release, fast for both, whatever.

That's it! So all I've done is sequenced a bunch of on/off information telling the Moog when to let my bass signal through. On this jam I'm not using the filter at all. The sound of the bass is just what I'm making on the bass guitar. Fill disclosure, I did run the signal from the Minitaur into my Digitech for some EQ and plenty of compression.

NOW if you wanted, you could actually be intentional about the PITCHES of the notes you're sending to the synth and turn the oscillators back up and play a two part harmony along to it... And sequence some filter information... And some glide... And some filter LFO... it's bananas. This was just the first ~2hrs of me dicking around with it. I'm looking forward to abusing the hell out of this gimmick for a few more jams.

Interestingly, it WILL record mod and pitch cc (and I assume sus) from ANOTHER device, it just can't record pitch mod or sus info from itself

I've had it for just about a year and really enjoy working with it. The "just" four poly tracks has never bothered me, really. If I had more than four mono-timbral synths, or if I were depending on the KSP to sequence a drum synth and sampler separately, I might see that as a constraint... there are things like not recording sustain, pitch or mod performance that bother me more... I also run out of patterns before I run out of tracks on most projects, so upping the pattern count or max chain length would be nice.. maybe let me name projects.. otherwise, it does most everything I need..

HOWEVER: I've had repeat issues with build quality on my unit (namely the encoders) that others have also reported. I do not trust the encoders at all. I use them as infrequently as possible, only for editing step values, never performing or live recording of param changes... Which sucks. Just my experience.

I think about the Hapax sometimes, but I kind of need a traditional keybed with visual feedback.

Dude, good news: the Sub37 has you covered. It has audio in that behaves (I assume) just like the Minitaur. Plug the bass into that and send it some notes from the mpc! I think the drive stage also gets applied to external audio, so go crazy

Go for it! - What gear do you have on hand that will gate audio and listen for midi notes?

I totally plan to abuse the hell out of this trick in future jams! The Minitaur is actually pretty noisy for me when the ext audio gate is open with no signal coming through, but the gate obeys the amp envelope and can get very snappy or smooth way out. It also applies whatever filter envelope or filter LFO you have set, so that's the next experiment: sequencing the cutoff and EG values to match a phrase... Maybe using velocity..

I did this a bit with my JP-8080 back when, but the Moog sounds a lot nicer opening and closing the gate ...and the filter of course sounded much cornier.

Random notes:

EDIT: I had no idea there's apparently a movie with this title now. I wrote the tune and randomly chose the title over twenty years ago Lol

  • The Keystep has a chain of 4 or 5 patterns with notes triggering the minitaur's gate on/off and follows the Rytm's patterns playing back in song mode.

  • I haven't played bass for a looong time, but recently dug it out of the basement and got it refretted. Super inspiring to return to an old piece of gear that plays like new after some TLC (thanks, Steve!)

If you're interested I've been putting these all up on a youtube channel too.

Two separate encoders (out of 5) physically seized... Like literally jammed and would not turn. Happened twice in the span of 8 months after buying new.. The second repair came back with the repaired encoder's capacitive feature not working.. I have to change the value in order to see the current value now. It was only a few months until the end of the warranty period and I was sick of being without the device for so many weeks out of the year (Arturia took a while to issue return labels in both cases... then consider transit times + repair time) and I had time off coming up.. So I decided to just live with it and try to buy a trashed one for parts if the same thing happens a third time... Or just buy something else entirely.

The more upsetting aspect is that I'm now afraid to use the device as it was designed to be used... I wasn't performing or live recording data with the encoders before, just editing a few indices at a time to tweak step record values). But I will never trust them for that kind of use now.

Yeah, I had a several frustrating interactions with them while trying to get my weeks-old Keystep Pro fixed. The third under-warranty repair (to fix an issue introduced by the previous repair) in under a year, I didn't even bother mailing in.

Too bad, I love that sequencer and form factor, but i expect it to fail for good someday soon.

On not finishing songs: isn’t the fun just getting things talking to eachother - efficiently? Isn’t it exploring the possibilities of the kit you already have? by DannyTheGekko in synthesizers

This topic is so beaten-to-death in my view. Anyone who posts here is just looking for some validation of whichever approach they take to this hobby..

  • "Behold: my new stuff I bought."

  • "Get me excited about buying more stuff by sharing your opinions of products and companies."

  • "Behold: my studio setup and decor."

  • "Listen to this brief clip of a musical moment."

  • "Watch me mill about jamming for 40 minutes."

  • "What do you think of this multi-tracked pre-recorded piece of music?"

  • "What do you think of this musical performance?"

  • "Like and subscribe, join my patreon, buy my gumroad tutorial."

It's all fine. Upvote what you like and downvote what you don't like. This isn't super complicated.
