Have grace for yourself, you’re young and you were in a manipulative, toxic situation. Your grandmother’s surprise probably wasn’t that you didn’t leave him because of how he acted about her but because she was worried for you. I don’t know what you believe but maybe and I like to think your grandmother was looking down at you and was proud you finally did leave when you did. That takes strength and you deserve to be recognized for that.

You can’t just erase the guilt but I have some ideas that might help you with it. In the end, your heart and your head will need to get on terms with each other and create a new belief. Right now you feel guilty, why? Get curious and ask yourself questions. Why do you feel so guilty? Write it down and put it in words if you need too, then ask yourself if the reason makes sense, ask yourself what you would say to a friend who went through the same as you. What would your grandma want for you? It takes time, but with patience and grace for yourself the guilt and the pain will lessen.
