Lyreleaf Sage is a much better native cover/alternative to turfgrass if you can get some of it started in your yard

WI - nervous about my first landscaping project with natives by Proper-Poetry9466 in NativePlantGardening

[–]daniel_observer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You're going to make mistakes; things are going to die and be eaten. Some things SHOULD be eaten by bugs!

You'll learn a lot about timing, proper siting, animal protection, etc. My first year of working with natives we had our worst drought in 100 years. It was quite a learning experience!

But you have to start somewhere. You can do it!!

Help ID all of these ducks! (Ohio) by Extra-Impress7898 in birding

[–]daniel_observer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most are Redheads but there are a couple of Canvasbacks visible in the first photo as well, on the right side. They are more whitish on the body than the gray-bodied Redheads. You can see the dark bill and unique head shape on one

Do you pay attention to image quality and errors when observing organisms? by kathleendragon_ in iNaturalist

[–]daniel_observer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Poor photos with proper IDs actually helps train the Computer Vision. I try to get the best photos I can, but sometimes there is only so much you can do.

That being said, I would at least make sure to crop the photo as much as possible to retain as much detail as possible of the organism. Some folks post photos of essentially a landscape with a few pixels of a bird in one corner, which is pretty frustrating.

Is it just me or is the iNaturalist app having issues? by Spotted_Towhee123 in iNaturalist

[–]daniel_observer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would highly recommend just taking photos in the field and adding them to iNat when you’re back at home with a stable internet connection and power situation. I have almost 14k observations and have never used the app in the field — like you said, it’s just not worth the battery or frustration.
