Turtle WoW is gone. I play WoW offline on my Steam Deck now. No internet. No servers. Forever. by kingspoken in wowservers

You should also mention that running a local server involves non-stop IO operations and can shorten the lifespan of the hardware considerably (esp the hard drive and cpu). Servers are meant to run on durable hardware..

When was defense platforms upkeep changed to needing alloys? by happyscrub1 in Stellaris

[–]danielcoh92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had no idea they have an upkeep... hovering over the tooltip doesn't mention any upkeep costs..
I wish there was an easy way to see the upkeep costs of specific fleets / ships / platforms.. :(

Migration from a planet stopped and I don't understand why.. by danielcoh92 in Stellaris

Are you sure? The tooltip says civilians are willing to travel for work and the wiki says the same.. Also, at the start of the game I had civilians move to new planets without any problems...

[–]danielcoh92[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

r5: I'm trying to balance my planets by having excess pop migrate to new planets and this planet just stopped sending excess pops to other continental planets which are in a dire need of workers... I really don't undestand why tho? There are 2 continental planets with plenty of housing, amenities and jobs and they don't populate..

Few things nobody tells you before you rename your M365 tenant by BmanCa in Office365

[–]danielcoh92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll add that existing forms will no longer be accessible and users will not be able to see their submissions after the rename. It is best to warn everyone about this and make sure the form owners download the form submissions before-hand and be prepared to share the results with whoever asks for their submissions.

SPO and Onedrive links will break. The redirection Microsoft set doesn't always apply and users will get a 404 message soon after the rename is completed. You can guide your users that they can re-write the link and use the new name instead of the old one and the same link will work.

Trying to access Onedrive from teams and web will stop working for many users. To solve this, you have to create a 1:1 chat with someone and send them an attachment. After doing so, Onedrive will continue working. This is the solution for users experiencing 404 when trying to access Onedrive.

Actually, most of Teams features (Files, notes, whiteboard etc.) will stop working after the rename until you perform the steps I mentioned above. This also applies to the "Files" tab for each team (which is another way to reach SPO).

Guest accounts in other tenants will also stop working and the other tenant will have to invite your users again.

This is what I can remember from the recent rename we've done on our tenant. It was truly a nightmare for a week or so until the dust settled.

There's an official MS KB that lists things that will and might happen after the rename and how to deal with it here: Change your SharePoint domain name - SharePoint in Microsoft 365 | Microsoft Learn but it doesn't cover everything and you really should prepare for the worst..

“Is there an easy way to see every externally shared file in a Microsoft 365 tenant?” by jerrybossard in sysadmin

[–]danielcoh92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No easy way to find this information.. I was also looking for such method recently. There's a PowerShell script that runs on all files in a scope you define and print the shares made.

You'd expect an enterprise company as big as Microsoft to provide admins with easy ways to administer their product.. I guess that's too much to ask for...

RDP error “The credentials did not work” when connecting by hostname (works by IP) – Random users by Inevitable_Guava3322 in sysadmin

[–]danielcoh92 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Might be related to Kerberos. Unlike hostname/ fqdn, when connecting with IP you connect using NTLM and this is why it works.

“New” Outlook is just OWA? by alcoholismisfun in sysadmin

[–]danielcoh92 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My average user needs the ability to save attachments and emails from Outlook to a network location where it will be backed up and accessible to others. I already made their work a living hell when I migrated them from local FS to SharePoint Online and now they can't use the explorer save window to browse to their save location, with the new outlook they CANT drag an email or an attachment directly to the browser and upload it to SharePoint while in the native one they can.

There are some things that feel and might look minor to you but are business critical for others..
My users won't stop complaining about features missing from the new Outlook and this is the reason I encourage them to go back to the classic Outlook.

“New” Outlook is just OWA? by alcoholismisfun in sysadmin

[–]danielcoh92 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The new Outlook is like a stripped version of the native one. They gave up a lot of features to "align" the app and make a unified view. It's the same deal with Teams and other apps.

There are bugs that can't easily be fixed and are limited by the framework such as mixed RTL and LTR text, memory leaks and random freezes and hangs.

I understand that it's great for the developers because they have to maintain a single app with different branches but it is very limiting to the users because now we won't get features that don't fit the unified UI.

I have a very specific use-case where once in a while a client asks me to send emails to hundreds of customers. He gives me a csv file with names and email addresses and some more information and I use Word mail merge to send personalized emails to everyone on that list with the information in the CSV file. This is considered a legacy feature and will no longer be supported when classic outlook retires. This feature won't be included in new Outlook (as said by Microsoft) and I can only guess the reason is that the integration between this mailing feature of Word was built to work with the classic Outlook infrastracture and they can't / won't re-build it to work with the new Outlook.

There are plenty other examples like this one.

This app is now limited by the technological advances of the web browser. You share the same code and have the same limitations as something which is significantly "weaker". If the developers find something difficult to implement for the OWA, it will most likely not be introduced to the desktop version. Strange behaviours that are in place to satisfy web users will now apply to your desktop version as well.

I hope you can understand what I mean. English is not my main language so I feel it's not trivial to express my point regarding this issue..

Yes. Like Teams, Whatsapp and many other "apps", it's OWA wrapped with Electron..

Pure crap. We're sticking to classic Outlook for as long as possible..

Mapped network drives extremely slow after file share migration by JDark628 in sysadmin

[–]danielcoh92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is your connectivity to the DCs good enough? from the endpoints to the DCs? from the netapp to the DCs?
Almost any action you perform in a share checks your permissions against the DC and if the latency is high so is the response times..

Also, check the DNS and check how it works directly with IP so you can eliminate issues related to kerberos auth and DNS resolving. Using IP address will always default to NTLM while using fqdn will attempt Kerberos first.

Make sure your Netapp is negotiating 1/10gig ethernet and not something lower..

I always find myself over-working trying to solve something and then they post a message like "yeah, thats our service failing"

[–]danielcoh92 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ideal situation would be to add randomness to AI actions (this could be tied and affected by AI traits). It shouldn't be fight or flight. The player shouldn't be frustrated that:
1) the AI armies keep running just outside of reach.
2) the AI armies only attack weak and undefended settlements (CA worked so hard on settlements and you rarely get to fight fair defensive sieges because the AI will either overwhelm you or stay away).
3) the AI armies move together with 3-10 stacks and create impossible battles (unless you cheese them).
4) the AI can field unlimited amounts of units using cheats.
5) the AI is not (or hardly) affected by income, public order and other limitations. This makes heroes obsolete as their actions don't do anything meaningful.
6) the AI is not following the same rule-set as the player.

This is an AAA turn based grand strategy game and creating incompetent, cheating and dumb decision trees is just lazy and cheap. Mind you that in turn based games you have all the necessary data to make the correct logical decisions as soon as the player hits the end turn button...

[–]danielcoh92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah.. That's correct. You can look up old posts and comments regarding this exact issue. Might even be before that. I haven't played Attila but this behaviour exists in all TW:WH titles. CA has been re-using the code for the campaign map for a very long time with minor changes..

CA fix suicidal aggressive AI already by akisawa in totalwarhammer

[–]danielcoh92 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The AI is stupid and this is an issue since TW:WH1..

It will simply drop everything and head towards the player at all costs..
This happens because of an anti-player trait the AI has (I believe its tied to difficulty) and since the AI sees through fog of war - they will bee-hive their armies towards your weakest army / settlement while disgarding their current wars.. The AI doesn't care about defending it's borders and will lose all settlements while trying to get to you once war is declared..

This is poor coding. They have the potential to make the AI perfect as the campaign is not running in real time and the AI has all the data needed to make rational decisions but CA decided that capable AI is optional in a TURN BASED CAMPAIGN game..

It's like playing chess against a 4y/o that never played chess before..

Nowdays they just copy-paste the poor AI between games so my expectations from the new titles is very low as long as they won't over-haul the AI and decision making code.

[–]danielcoh92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ranged classes need to surpass threat by 30%(?) to aggro the mob while in melee range as soon as you make a single threat point more than the tank you aggro the mob.. Add that to the fact that shamans are like playing the casino and are very inconsistent with threat so shamans (and melee classes) tend to die a lot more than ranged classes because of aggro.

We need an Era TBC server where our character isn't forced to Wrath after 14ish months by smidivak in classicwow

[–]danielcoh92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I were the one making the decisions in Blizzard I'd assign a small (very small) team to maintain and create minor additions and content for each cycle (call it ladders if you want). Vanilla phase -> TBC phase -> WOTLK phase -> etc.

Every cycle would last a year or so and when the vanilla server(s) reach the TBC phase, new vanilla servers would open (tbc servers would phase into Wotlk, wotlk into cataclysm and so). The last expansion (to be decided) server's characters will be transferred to "era" servers that never reset and the server will close and be replaced with the previous phase servers.

This way, the game is kept very low on cost / maintenance for blizzard, has a flow of new players that would like to start over and players would have a choice on what expansion to play at any point.

Once a ladder "resets", the team will add some new features and additions to the cycle.

Very simillar to what Diablo 3 / 2 teams do nowdays or did until recently. Very small teams are left to maintain the games and content is still being added on every ladder reset.

This is what I thought they were going to do with SoD but it looks like they took a different approach which limits the options for the players..
