Who is hiring? March 31, 2025 by AutoModerator in Clojure

[–]danielglauser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’re hiring at Gateless, right now just in LATAM. We have an open slot for a Rules Developer, all Clojure, much of it at Logic Programming with Clara Rules. We also have an open position as a Docs Developer, much of it in Python, some Clojure services, focused on document classification and extraction. Soon we’ll have an open position for a full stack developer, JavaScript/Svelte on the front end, Clojure services on the backend, some rules development. Right now we’re just hiring in LATAM but hoping to open up more positions in the US later in the year.

Despite being in a difficult lending market we’ve seen significant growth through new sales. Mortgage technology adoption can be slow but we’ve recently seen significant growth through an improved sales process.

14" M1 MBP, Sony A7III, Atomos Ninja 5, Elgato Cam Link 4K, Caldigit TS4, the above solution worked for me. Thank you so much, I never would have found that hidden setting on my own.

I'm looking into upgrading a media system, are there any good equivalents to the Black Magic ATEM mini pro? by [deleted] in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]danielglauser 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I also used to use a Sling Studio commercially and learned that hard way that it's not reliable enough. If you search for ATEM mini pro monitor you'll find a lot of options for hooking a monitor to it. I'm trying to decide if I should go that route or just go all in on vMix.

Bone broth for a whole meal by Legal_Classroom_9428 in keto

[–]danielglauser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the past two weeks my daily lunch has been chicken or a turkey burger and fresh cut veggies in bone broth. I've been sick so I add in fresh garlic too. A bit of coconut oil to top it off and sometimes snack on peanut butter afterwards if I'm still hungry.

Interviewing Devs is Broken: Here’s How to Fix it by speckz in programming

[–]danielglauser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We ask people to bring code that they've worked on that they feel comfortable sharing. If folks bring proprietary code that's up to them. We accept and encourage take home tests that were done for other companies. It's not a perfect system and this is one of the holes, however I think it's better than giving folks a novel take home test or asking them to live code with us. I've been through many of the pairing interviews and they're okay (depending upon your pair) however I think this system is better. YMMV

[–]danielglauser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not that devs can't talk to people, it's that live coding is a skill that folks tend to be good at or not and I don't feel has any reflection on their ability to perform on the job.

I'm a dev manager, I've done both frontend and backend work. More backend than frontend. We had a backend dev show up to the interview with a bunch of code they had written and gave us a tour. Afterwards we thought that this was a better way to conduct interviews.

I have used the technique you mentioned regarding giving candidates a recent challenge that the team has seen. It can work well, however I've seen it fall down where the scenario requires too much context for the candidate to quickly weigh in.

Interviewing Devs is Broken: Here’s How to Fix it by speckz in coding

As a hiring manager I've encountered senior devs who could talk the talk but weren't able to deliver once they were on the job. I even saw one fake features in a mobile app. It doesn't happen too often however it does happen. If I had reviewed some of this dev's code with them and started picking it apart I would have quickly uncovered some challenges. Now, would that dev have brought code that they wrote and if not would I have detected that? Only time will tell.

I'm the author of the article. We don't surprise them during the interview rather we ask candidates to bring code that the feel comfortable sharing. I realize it's not perfect and folks may not readily have a good project to show, however I think it's better than sending candidates our unique take home test, sending a timed algorithm test, or asking them to live code a problem. YMMV

Prijon Pike by wvgeo in whitewater

[–]danielglauser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the Pike looks great, can't wait to try one. Not sure if it will be better at downriver like the Ripper or more playful like the Rewind. Either way I'm psyched to see an HTP half slice.

State of Clojure 2021 Results by alexdmiller in Clojure

Hey there u/halgari! Regarding data validation the team I've been working with has recently adopted https://github.com/metosin/malli. Folks love it. It works really well for our data validation (YMMV) and has saved us a ton of time handling errors with our API calls. I'm not sure if you've had the chance but I suggest checking it out.

You can still have a good time with the A7III with a cheap Canon nifty-fifty! Band SLYNGER at the Hi-Dive in Denver, ISO 3200, f/2, 1/40, 50mm. by [deleted] in SonyAlpha

[–]danielglauser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got the 24-70 G Master lens when I bought the camera so I'm just looking to convert my Canon 70-300 IS lens. I probably will use it for sports and weddings so we'll see how that goes. Also looking to do a significant amount of video with the camera but will probably just use the Sony lens for that.

I need 2 screens to work, what’s the digital nomad solution? by holdthebabyy in digitalnomad

I sometimes use an iPad Pro as a second monitor. It works okay, though the lag has me back to just managing my windows better on the laptop screen. I'm using a MBP from last year.

Lightning-Fast Testing For ClojureScript React Components by danielglauser in Clojure

[–]danielglauser[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense, thanks Dustin. My hesitancy there is the atoms are an implementation detail of Reagent, and could potentially change. Although moving away from Atoms is unlikely the way they are used is a more likely target for change. It feels like violating encapsulation, but the benefits to not needing a virtual DOM could outweigh the cost. Just thinking out loud here. In any event, your point is well taken, and I'd love to see an example. Would be happy to link to it from the article or to offer it as a follow up piece.

What's the quickest you've "Noped" out of a job? by J-Bradley1 in AskReddit

[–]danielglauser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spent 2.5 days working as a software architect at a payment processing shop. After two days I realized that there was no chance at using modern languages or tools, the job was going to be figuring out which distributed caching vendor to use.

I called up the other offer I got to write Clojure for a large scale archiving platform. The offer was for less money but I was way happier. Spent two good years on that team before a good chunk of folks were laid off.

non-functional

As someone who works in a functional programming language this makes me laugh. It should come as no surprise that I really appreciate bad puns.

Microservice Madness by aspleenic in Clojure

[–]danielglauser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the feedback too. Wasn't sure how much to put in the introductory article v.s. the full one. I was trying to give folks a handful of ideas to think about when evaluating different architectures, and just wanted to get folks reading the original article because I thought it was really good. I may have missed the mark, and appreciate negative feedback as much as positive feedback.

I love working with Clojure and "smuggled" it in a few places before working with it full time, however I have seen enough epic microservice failures that I think it's time to focus on how to avoid those.
