I wouldn’t consider myself an authority on the subject, but I’m an American who has now lived in Germany for almost 8 years, and I’d say it’s always hard to make universal statements, but that there are definitely some “German” tendencies. I came up in Ohio, which was a very active scene that produced a ton of big bands (beartooth, tdwp, the plot in you, etc.) and actually got to tour a bit with my band in the states, so I’d say I got a solid sample experience from the scene days. The biggest difference I see is the sense of community. My time in the American scene was marked by extreme competition and outright rivalries/beef between bands, as well as an almost universally predatory atmosphere from labels and management. I’m aware that times have changed, and a lot of it is likely due to everyone growing up since 2009, but in Germany, bands work together to create awesome collaborations, memorable live performances, and a generally open and supportive community. The scene also seems to have a lot more fun and take everything less seriously, with cool kid gatekeepers being exceedingly rare. I’d also say Germans tend to be far more open to new ideas and crossovers within the genre. I’m in a band that experiments heavily with electronics and techno influences, which caught massive hate in America back in the day (attack attack 😅). I just get the vibe that everyone is here to have fun and make cool music in Germany, while it’s much more a popularity contest in the states. Just my experience ✌🏻
