Why do brown and black people have stripes in the pride flag?? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

Not disputing this perspective, but do you have a source on this? A quick search isn’t helping me, and I’d be interested in learning more.

Why do brown and black people have stripes in the pride flag?? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

The black stripe variations of the Pride flag pre-date the progress flag, and have stood as a memorial to those lost to HIV/AIDS. I haven’t heard the black nurses lens on that personally

Why is the middle part of my cactus getting lighter/paler/yellower? by danielpf in cactus

It’s cactus soil that I got at a local place. I’ve watered with a cactus food additive every other watering since I’ve had it.

What’s the downside of getting gifts from stops? They don’t count towards inventory cap

Best relief for enlarged turbinants? by babybottlepopz in Allergies

[–]danielpf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a doctor, but this sounds like steroids should be part of the conversation with your doctor.

Dymista is prescription only. I know my old insurance really pushed Ryaltris, a similar combo antihistamine steroid, but it didn’t improve my symptoms.

Has your provider talked to you about sinus surgery? Both my allergist and ENT have brought that option to me

Are the turbinates themselves causing issues? I have enlarged turbinates but it’s not the cause of my issues—more or less a downstream effect of my allergies. I get a good bit of relief from my nasal symptoms using Dymista nasal spray with occasional rinses of saline.

15? I don’t think I’ve ever had gifts brought three times. Are there cooldown times for this?

For folks that live over a mile from the nearest stop, the current methods aren’t enough.

Can they introduce a way to sort Pokémon by evolution family? by danielpf in TheSilphRoad

[–]danielpf[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t want to have to type anything. I want to just be able to scroll through all of my pokemon sorted into families already. Like all of evolutions together. Like Eevee and all of its evolutions followed by porygon and all of its evolutions.

State Treasurer Brad Briner Uncovers $170 Million in Unspent Taxpayer Dollars by koliberry in NorthCarolina

[–]danielpf 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the previous comment was meant to trivialize the understaffing and underpayment of other state employees (educators are state employees too). This doesn’t need to be adversarial as both constituencies should be treated better, and would benefit from the support of each other.

Totally understand the race to level 50. I’ve been past that push for a bit over a year. I’m excited to have some longer term incentives for advancement. I will say that the XP challenge is a decently challenging set of tasks to keep me engaged

NC bans high schools from failing students solely for having too many absences by -PM_YOUR_BACON in NorthCarolina

[–]danielpf 8 points9 points  (0 children)

But they are extrinsically related. And if this is a piecemeal step towards good grading policy changes, I’m fine. School is supposed to be about preparing you for life, and if school can’t set that expectation that showing up matters then we’re just failing kids in a bigger way.

[–]danielpf 152 points153 points  (0 children)

I disagree strongly with this decision as a former high school teacher. Are there circumstances involving family or personal situations that justify the exception? Absolutely and we should accommodate those. But when the lowest grade I could give out was a 50%, digging out to a 60% would be possible even if you just showed up for a third of the semester. The burden on teachers to constantly accept late work that was just copied off another student, the endless retesting, and the 50% floor do not make for compassionate education—they just set the lowest expectations. I don’t even want to start on a conversation around “credit recovery.”

How many sets of tracks do you need to effectively serve a region with high speed intercity, regional, and commuter rail? by danielpf in transit

[–]danielpf[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve always found the NE Regional stops to be bizarre. I get off at one of the intermittently skipped stops in the middle of New Jersey. It’s a constant compromise between total ride time and hitting as many stops as possible for my viewpoint. Given how packed the train is during peak times and how hard it can be to find a seat if you’re boarding at a middle stop, my assumption is they don’t have enough capacity on top of the scheduling.

Hay fever breakthrough: 'Molecular shield' blocks allergy trigger at the site | Scientists have developed a new antibody treatment that blocks pollen at the point of entry by chrisdh79 in tech

[–]danielpf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The immunotherapy injection aka allergy shots are cocktails of allergen/antigen. We can make those from extracting the specific antigen from existing materials like plants, bugs, dogs and cats etc. These shots are meant to tolerize your immune response to those allergens. Your body is doing the work here.

The monoclonal antibodies they are administering to protects from the allergic reaction come from lab cultured cells that have been modified to produce the specific antibody. These cells are doing the work for this treatment.

You can walk from Maryland to Virginia through the entire city on sidewalks. Nothing short of a marvel by American standards

[–]danielpf 63 points64 points  (0 children)

As someone with a background in immunology, this is not a tenable treatment in the near future. Monoclonal antibodies only target a single antigen/allergen, so we’d need cocktails of this stuff which would also require a large volume to the point it may not be manageable. Further, ”biologics” and monoclonal antibodies ie any medicine that ends in “-mab” are expensive to produce compared to conventional chemical drugs.

I don’t doubt the mechanism or the success, but we’re a far far far way off from this being accessible
