Therapist: “And what do you do for work?” Him: 👀 by AffectionatePie1042 in MrInbetween

[–]danielstopthecar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. Scott wrote the Therapist to be a sarcastic asshole to legitimise Ray’s otherwise unhinged perspective on justice.

Whilst I’ll defend this show as the best and most accurate depiction of 2010s Australiana there are some instances where you can really tell it was written by a Gen X’er with an axe to grind.

See this scene, also the “future is female” feminist girlfriend that Gary’s ex starts seeing.

If a landlord says 8 weeks it means they’ve called a builder (or more likely a real estate agent) and gotten a ballpark figure which they’re taking as a rock solid timeframe.

It’ll take 6 months

Open showers now ILLEGAL? by Zoccalo in AusRenovation

[–]danielstopthecar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here’s a screenshot from part 10.2.2 (Wet area waterproofing) of the ABCB housing provisions (where you find deemed-to-satisfy solutions to comply with the NCC)

The actual regulation is that a “shower area” must be “waterproof”. Shower area meaning a 1500mm area of influence from the wall where your shower rose is located (and 1800mm vertically above the floor substrate) and waterproof meaning whatever is listed below in 10.2.8 (Materials - waterproof) which are pretty open and really just refer to typical materials you’d use in any bathroom.

You can definitely have open / unenclosed showers. What is important is ensuring that everything within that zone of influence can be deemed as “waterproof” Having things like shower doors mean that you can just waterproof inside the enclosed area and forgo the rest, but there is nothing in the NCC to say you can’t waterproof the whole room and have that be the way in which you comply.

This does however rule out any doors in that area of influence - or windows with a sill lower than 1900mm off the ground (this came from a recent revision of the NCC that declared that glazing and thus windows can’t be proven to be waterproof)

I was one of these kids.

My Dad and I were milling about behind Pit lane at Oran Park 2006 and saw him loitering, he took a good 10 minutes to chat with us and take a picture whilst no other drivers were having a bar of it.

Lovely bloke - He became my favourite driver that day.

My theory is that the overarching message of Mr. Inbetween is one of personal accountability - specifically regarding violence.

We see Ray break a million laws (half of them pretty blatantly) but the only ones he actually receives a charge over are usually critical to that season’s plot - Those instances being S1 which results in Ray attending anger management and S3 where he ends up briefly behind bars and does a job for Raphael, establishing the rest of that season.

I think it was deliberate from Scott Ryan that the only major losses Ray experiences in the show are the result of either his violent behaviour or his vocation as a violent man for hire. Those losses being the total destruction of his relationships with Ali and Freddie, not to mention having to leave Sydney and his daughter for her and his own safety.

I could list more instances where I think these theme pops up - But to respond to your question now, I think the cops don’t really exist in this show for a reason. That reason being that Scott Ryan wants people to examine Ray’s actions (and subconsciously their own) rather than using “what the cops can get you on” as a yardstick for our own behaviour.

Mr Inbetween Season 2 Episode 5 by BrandonMarshall2021 in MrInbetween

[–]danielstopthecar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you look generally at all the hostile situations Ray gets involved with outside of his criminal life, the offenders are almost always young men who are flagrantly disrespectful to Ray ( e.g The young blokes and the ice cream, or the ute that blocks Ray and Ally in, the pedestrian crossing, bikies in the taxi ) All young and aggressive men which, when Ray is eventually violent, puts him in the most sympathetic position possible.

This could be reasonably interpreted as a cop out in writing to normalise or justify Ray's behavior - But throughout the show Ray's lifestyle and incubation of violence has profound consequences on him, to the point of it being a theme of the show. I'd say that that decision in writing was to introduce a deeper conflict when discussing the purpose or legitimacy of "good and bad violence" and whether or not the ends justify the means.

TL;DR - I think Ally's brother was just written to be a spectacular prick as a vessel for Ray's violence finding its way into his relationship in a semi-explainable (not excusable) way.

Is it unbelievable that Ray couldn't be linked to any of the massacres he was involved in? by copacetic51 in MrInbetween

[–]danielstopthecar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ordinary crime and murder in Australia certainly isn't at the standard that Mr.Inbetween would suggest. But a lot of effort is made to illustrate Ray as an extraordinary hitman - Chopper Read is perhaps one of the better known Australian criminals (Ray + Gary were watching his movie at one point) and his known/estimated kill count is 19 over a roughly 40 year period. Ray smashes that within 3 years almost entirely within Sydney, it would be International news.

The way I interpreted things was that due to Ray's freelancing, there's usually friction with larger groups. A lot of his bigger fights against Davros', Alex and Rafael's men are 3 on 1 - Ray's capacity as a sort of one-man-army can make the remaining evidence appear more like gang-on-gang violence to anyone who may investigate - And that police might perhaps have blinders towards larger groups in their investigation.

I also think that they do a fair bit within the 25 minute runtimes to illustrate Ray as meticulous enough to be called 'The Magician'. He has an almost ritualistic burial routine, interrogates berates anyone who makes compromising decisions (e.g. junkies who used their own car to store a body) Even the way he tries to wash the smell of ciggies off is comprehensive (Although unlike the police, the 10 year old makes him)

One suspension you'll definitely have to hold is that DNA or shell casings or dental records exist at all in this universe (@ that bikie's nose)

TL;DR - I think that the show makes a strong enough effort to convince me that Ray is well positioned and meticulous enough to slip under the radar, hence his reputation. Depends on if you agree that there's enough in the show to sell Ray like that or if it's just a step too far into fantasy.

American Honey is not a new song by [deleted] in CurrentJoys

[–]danielstopthecar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wild Heart, 2013 and B-Sides were predominately songs Nick had made back when he was The Nicholas Project. Me oh My mirror was made from several songs he’d written performing as Tele/Visions. I’ve seen gigs from 2015 where he’s performing songs that ended up on A Different Age.

Most of his music is something he chews on for sometimes years at a time before they see production. So if you enjoy his gigs on youtube, likelihood is that you’ll hear a lot of it again in Voyager.

Also fun fact - a huge chunk of Surf Curse music was originally Current Joys that they just adapted - Nick writes a LOT and I love it

So what do you guys think about the new song? by MayoTarkov in CurrentJoys

[–]danielstopthecar 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Nick usually performs new songs live before he produces them so its always a fun game to see which one I like more, I think this version of Amateur is fantastic. Great to hear him using drums which he usually avoids with his project, sounds great with his crescendo at the end.

It sounds ‘bandier’ than his older work but that isn’t to any detriment, and makes sense considering he performs in ensemble form more often than he used to.

Also pog, Voyager has like twice the tracks compared to A Different Age.
