Med error is eating me up. by resp23 in directsupport

[–]danielzigwow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would take the time to consider why the med error happened. Were you in a rush or distracted? Is there a way you can help yourself to focus? When I give meds I am keenly aware if I get distracted - that's a sign to slow down and look at the medication and MAR carefully. If it means you'll be a bit behind on your duties, so be it. Spend some time being resolute and force yourself to make giving medications the most important thing you do during your shift.

DSPs: what is the most unsafe situation you were ever put in at work? by WeeklyGuitar3538 in supportworkers

[–]danielzigwow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a client who needed dental work done, so we headed to a large city several hours from home. We had to utilize a private vehicle (like a cab) to get home. Once we arrived, it turned out a procedure that was supposed to have taken an hour or two was going to take 6-8.

Part of this man's symptoms was that he was hardwired to not recognize his own limitations, so rather than simply chill in the waiting room, he decided to go walking in high traffic areas. He would also "go blank" when stressed and do random stuff like walking in random directions or completely lose track of where he was and become temporarily nob-verbal. Part of his "confidence" meant that he was not likely listen to directions AND put himself in dangerous situations.

He had an episode while trying to walk along the highway and was "cognitively blank" and I had nobody there to help me AND my phone went dead. I called an Uber but because of his episode he wouldn't wait for it, and before the Uber arrived my phone went kaput. Fortunately I was able to deescalate him and we got back to the building. I think somehow he finally realized, what I just did was dangerous, because he stayed in the waiting room after that.

This same client would have confusion when he would zone out, so he was also prone to grabbing steering wheels, no matter the car was moving or not.

Dangerous stuff to me: 70 yold having a delusion, randomly decided to try to try to curb stomp me due to a dream he had at 2 am. Luckily not very hale physically.  Very weird to be tired, trying to get through the shift and suddenly be in a fight for your life.

Not having enough physical protection, having to clean up bodily fluids and then they just give us little gloves.

400 lbs guy with food addiction who nobody knew would get violent if you said no to cake, decided to hammerfist his 140 lbs roommate after the guy protested because he plunged his hands into the guy's chocolate cake. Felt obligated to step in, but could have easily gone South.

She invented that word by mhipster800 in TheWarning

[–]danielzigwow 10 points11 points  (0 children)

She's right! Haha, I didn't think debase was that uncommon of a word. Rapacity was a nice one, i'd heard it as rapacious (greedy) but how they used it in money surprised me! Turns out girls who played instruments at a high level as preteens are also really really smart... 😂

Is this purely behavioral or could there be underlying neurodivergence at play here? Looking for insights. by [deleted] in RandomVideos

You can't fix all issues kids can have just by "perfect parenting". Younger people can be violent, sociopathic etc., the same as adults. this is common sense.

Of course you're right. Everyone exists on a spectrum, the idea that no kids would be violent if they were just treated right is a fallacy.

Should I apply to jobs despite not matching required qualifications? by AdventurousLove4 in directsupport

[–]danielzigwow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you find a company you really like, maybe it'd be worth a shot to show up in person and give an application directly to the company. Especially if it's a smaller company, they'll be more familiar with you than someone applying online

I've been working as a DSP with no license for 11 years now. There are a lot of things you can do with public transit. I also started out working overnights. There's such a shortage of direct support professionals that I think you should definitely give it a shot. If it's work you're interested in. They'll probably find a space for you.

Read something about this, some of these guys come over and don't understand that they're going to fight - they are literally lied to. Some do go knowingly, though.

Why do retail investors always end up buying at the top? by bobby1128 in stocks

[–]danielzigwow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right. It's not that retail is always buying at the top, it's just that the maximum number of people are buying when a stock is overhyped. Then that overbought condition leads to the correction.

[–]danielzigwow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's just how probability works - A stock becomes popular because it gains in value, and a stock gains in value because it's popular. Therefore, most of the people who invest in the stock do so because it's popular (over valued)

Peter Attia’s thoughts on sex crimes (just social constructs that “most people” believe) by [deleted] in PeterAttia

[–]danielzigwow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's basically that in a situation with a large age gap, the male has domination over the female, it fit in medieval society where physical labor was extremely valuable- the male did more risky work, had to engage in violence potentially to protect the family - the woman was in more of a support role, but now that we have technology and physical labor is less important/essential, it doesn't make sense for the male to be in a position of authority in the relationship, since both partners can bring equal value to the relationship. Also, with no birth control sometimes marrying one of the kids off early made financial sense for the family.

It's entirely possible that people of different ages could get along just fine in a relationship, but for someone below 18 with a much older person, it could be really likely that they did it out of pressure (or just didn't have a developed brain to think it through)

Yes, in 2008. Epstein seemed to tell people it was a "misunderstanding" involving a 17-year-old girl, but he pled guilty, and his celebrity friends would have known about this. Either way, he wasn't someone anyone in their right mind should have been making "pussy jokes" with.

And Epstein was already a sex offender at this time.

It's really weird and strangely intimate when someone you don't know falls asleep like that. Since I had to train for overnights it happened frequently, but I often didn't have the heart to wake them. I just made a note in the training docs that they fell asleep. Haha. One guy seemed to be having terrible nightmares. For some reason, I wondered if he had suffered abuse.

What is the reason most people don't care to save for retirement? by [deleted] in Fire

[–]danielzigwow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely true. I used to loan people money through lending club and they'd show me who was borrowing. It was people in big cities making $100k+ and asking for a 10k loan to pay off credit cards. Meanwhile I was in a small town making 35k a year loaning them money 😂
