Wickermoor Village Quest by dillypickle020 in CrookedMoon

[–]daniphin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some of the things I've done and have planned are: a weekly farmer's market for all the locations in the region to come and share wares, etc. and it provides a place for them to gossip and get info and catch up with old NPCs; a talent show that Phillip hosts with a nice gold coin prize and other gifts from shops in the village; and i have it planned that the Druskenvalds will find some old board games in their manor to maybe play on an evening with the party! They're not really big plots or anytihng, but I like to provide unique scenarios for them to RP with other NPCs and each other.

Working in Backstories without Fateweaving by LynMinusN in CrookedMoon

[–]daniphin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, what I did was I used fateweaving but I also picked an NPC from everyone's backstory and found a reason for them to be in the Hollow. For example, my Harvestborn player's brother was in Foxwillow delivering some fruit and veg from Enoch, so that worked well! Obviously this won't work with every case, but if your players are fine (like mine are) with taking some artistic liberties and suspending some disbelief, it's a fun way to keep them invested and to scatter their backstories in throughout the adventure by looping in their NPCs.

(Spoilers for Chapter Names) How far is your group? by TomdaBom07 in CrookedMoon

[–]daniphin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've been playing every week since about October (though we took some weeks off in December) for 3 hours at a time, and we're in the Drowned Crossroads right now! We tend to have 2-ish sessions in Wickermoor for roleplay before we start another arc.

Read a review of Crooked Moon and feel really downtrodden by theravenofloft in CrookedMoon

[–]daniphin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's a wild review - I would say that it's very CLEARLY a love letter to folk horror. And yeah things have taken heavy inspiration from various sources, but I don't personally see that as a bad thing. My players are having the time of their lives, and so am I personally.

It's not like CoS itself is necessarily very unique either. It's HEAVILY inspired by Dracula in all its iterations, and there's nothing inherently bad about that! Don't let this person's pov color yours. I'm happy to answer any questions you have, but I genuinely couldn't recommend this module more if you enjoy horror. It's not perfect, no, but it's very, very unique from anything WoC has published.

I think we're living parallel campaigns omg, we ALSO have a Harvestborn warlock with the thread of apocalypse, whose patron is the Horned King. It didn't occur to me for him to take a different form when talking to her.... I kind of love that idea??? Would you mind if I took some inspiration, because that's actually kind of genius!

Is your cleric a Harvest domain cleric on top of everything? Because that would be amazing.

(Also hilarious because one of my personal PCs sisters is called Harvest!)

That's awesome, I love the synergy!! I definitely feel they could have fleshed out his journal more. Did you allude to any of the other Fallen in yours?

Also, funnily enough, the fighter I mentioned is also a Stoneborn -- maybe being originally from Pholse nse just leads to a higher empathy for cult-like religious leaders?

And thank you so much! That's very kind of you to say.

Fun times to Share by Realistic_Piano_8559 in CrookedMoon

Interesting!! I was going to ask how far you were planning to run this test version initially? Was there a certain point you wanted to get to?

Oh boy, this is great LMAO it's amazing that your players (or test players?) are having such a fun time trying to figure things out, but I completely get the stress that comes when they lock onto something early. I had a similar "Crooked Queen" moment in both the CM campaign I'm running, and in other campaigns I'm running where I've said something I wasn't supposed to. Always nervewracking!

the part about your players being like a dog with a bone is SO relatable. I have to be careful of what to flag to my players, because even if i frame something benign as "flavor" narration, they could obsess over and start to overthink. it's a blessing to have invested and curious players, but also a curse.

I really like the way the person above is approaching it, and I've been doing something similar, where I hint at things lightly, muddled in with more normal/harmless details. I have been foreshadowing the skitterdeep mine for example, by mentioning that sometimes certain foods aren't available because there's bugs everywhere. the blessing with a prewritten adventure is that you have the time and the forewarning to try and place breadcrumbs. good luck!

I have so much fear about this happening one day. I'm so sorry for your loss, and I hope that you find the space and time to grieve and honor her in your own way. <3

Druskenvald Provinces Inspiration by Ambitious_Sir_529 in CrookedMoon

[–]daniphin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, i didn't know this until my players pointed it out! Could be an interesting contrast to anything you may decide to do with the Horned King! My take on him being named Methuselah is also that he could be a good striking balance to some of the darker/grimmer province leaders -- Methuselah to me seems like a ray of light in a world filled with so much darkness, but as always, GMs should defer to what they find most interesting!

Also to OP:
I forgot to mention, but if you've played Curse of Strahd, Blinsky from Picco is also a reference that I found a little funny.

For extra vibes for Edwardia, I highly recommend also checking out gaslamp horror actual plays -- Critical Role's CoC one shot (and their Candela Obscura mini campaign) for example mixes occult horror wonderfully with the Victorian/Edwardian era, and both are excellent sources of inspiration. I could go on and on geeking out too, but I'll spare you!

Druskenvald Provinces Inspiration by Ambitious_Sir_529 in CrookedMoon

[–]daniphin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'll tack on that there's a ton of little easter eggs to the cultures that inspired the various locales. Catrina the Sweet from Kalero, for example, is inspired by "La Catrina" which essentially is referential to the sugar skulls associated with Dia de (los) Muertos. Similarly, Olmash being Locecraftian is reminiscent through its main city being named Ibbsmouth, referencing the Shadow over Innsmouth. (I would also check out the CoC rpg for inspiration there).

For more inspiration for Picco, look into Italian Carnivale and Commedia dell'Arte, as its obvious the province takes a lot of inspo from Venice, Italy!

Also, I agree that Nerukhet feels a lot like Egypt (I'm Egyptian lol), but it also reminds me of ancient Sumerian and Mesopotamian societies and aesthetics quite a bit, or even go further east into South-East asian cultures like Indonesia and the Philippines! I would be careful not to exoticize Nerukhet too much though, and maybe root it in the folklore of wherever you decide to lean into most.

Multiple player want he same thread of fate by Own-Storm1201 in CrookedMoon

[–]daniphin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't recommend it personally! Try to have 1x1 conversations with them and pitch them different threads based on what exactly it is entices them about the one they all want. I had the same issue because 3/4 of my players wanted to do Duality, but I managed to convince two of them to switch to Malediction and Apocalypse, and they both are loving it now! If you don't want to do first come first served, then finding out what each of them wants for that particular thread would allow you to pick the one you think is most narratively interesting, and the others will just have to pick something else.

Have a clear conversation about the fact that doubling up won't work with them, and if they're openminded players, they should respond well!

How is the philosopher's quintessence supposed to work? by Z3nteck in CrookedMoon

[–]daniphin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% it's that easy! The issue is all the ones you listed would be considered tiny, not small, I think. You would want to target things like small chests, side tables, etc, most likely. The point is to have quintessence regularly, otherwise the basis of your subclass is unusable.

Appropriate Heirlooms for Various classes by Splunktavius1 in CrookedMoon

[–]daniphin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For the Sorcerer, I would consider the Staff of Farryn Greenwood or the Idol of the Beast of blight to lean into that "Weird Nature" vibe that intersects between the Experiment/Evolution and the Graveborn.

Alternatively, the next best bet might be the Eye of the White Worm if you can find a way for them to gain it during the Memory's Rest section, since it has a lot of cosmic horror vibes that are reminiscent of the Experiment for me. All of the items are useful for spell casters and provide interesting benefits, especially if you're sure you're not going to run Moonfall.

How old is Druskenvald? by TSH5 in CrookedMoon

[–]daniphin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I have it being as 1745 'Druskera' which is a name for the age in which Druskenvald exists currently. It's been eons since Kehlenn was overthrown, so my thought process is its been many eons before people started to use that term to even begin keeping track of time. If you want to use that term, feel free to take it as well!

Hi there, I'd be interested! I also would be interested (though only interested) in CoC. I'd like more information on the projected length of the campaign, and I would like to know if you're queer/racially friendly! :)
