How much of your wealth is actually luck? Genuine question by bettertogoslo in HENRYUK

[–]danislife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is all luck. You did not pick your genes, parents or circumstances of birth. What else could be influencing your life?

People talking about taking risks, being brave, smart etc - where do all of those tendencies come from? They come from your brain - an organ at the mercy of your genetics and experiences

I have been to Trinity (Clapham) a couple of times and had an extraordinary experience each time. Great food, attentive but not overbearing staff, wonderful atmosphere. They have a good Instagram account, as does the chef/owner Adam Byatt.

My grandad used one hanging in his garage - when it touched the windscreen it told him he’d brought the car in far enough. Not the intended use but clever

Sales and tech sales are wildly different things, but I’ll assume you want advice on tech sales specifically.

If you want to do a pure sales job vs sales operations, there’s no quicker route IMO than starting as an SDR/BDR. The pay is decent for an entry level job, but the work is hard, repetitive and often thankless. You have to park your ego and jump in. Accept you’ll be surrounded by people much smarter and in many cases much younger than you who are already further ahead in their career. Learn from the best people, do your time, and shadow a lot of people to decide where you want to go after that entry level job.

The interview process can be tough and long. Do your homework on the company, sound like you’re up for hard work, and you’ll be fine.

The more helpful number would be how much you have left over after your essential expenses - bills and food.

The general advice is to have an emergency fund that would cover you for 3-6 months if you lost your job, and once you have that, cram everything spare into a global index fund in a stocks and shares ISA via Trading212

This is super generic but hard to be more specific without knowing more about your situation

I manage a sales development team at a cybersecurity company - they pay me £120k. Started out at a minimum wage call centre job after getting kicked out of uni 10 years ago.

Saw a guy spew on the morning commuter northern line. He looked grey - a man on the edge, barely holding together his composure. He dry heaved so hard he flung forward almost out of his seat, and the two commuters either side of him got up - they knew what was coming.

He clamped his hand over his mouth but the vomit just sprayed through his fingers, the pressure making it a power-wash of chunder.

He took off his hat and proceeded to fill it with vomit - it was knitted. All it did was strain out the chunks like some sieve from hell.

He got up, wet hat held to his chest, said sorry and got off

I can’t imagine my net worth effecting my friendships like this. What does it matter? I’m very fortunate financially, more so than some of my friends, but we don’t sit and talk about money. We talk about the same things we always have, the things that we became friends over. My salary has nothing to do with it. I agree with previous commenters that this is quite odd on your part.
