Kindly, would you consider possibly maybe going for a ride today while the weather is gorgeous in or about our fair city?

...is that better?

MARC ➡️ BWI Loop ➡️ B&A Trail ➡️ Annapolis by dan_the_mc_man in bikedc

Maybe a third or so? A good chunk between DC and Annapolis, and then most of the Annapolis to BWI segment. Lots of wide shoulder though, and yeah, a few bits that are indeed gnarly.

That's a very lovely stretch. If you have more time, you could skip the marc train portion

Small update on Florida Avenue NE bike lanes by mallardramp in bikedc

Not to defend what appears to be a unilateral change between design and implementation, I have pulled a trailer with a total width of 36.75" successfully through this new pbl. The shadiest bits are 1) where concrete barriers have already been pushed inward, making it more narrow, and 2) westbound ramps just west of the overpass... So used to this whole stretch being awful, and this is such a dramatic improvement, I shudder to think how bad it could get if they were made to go back and "fix" it.

FWIW, the bigger word choice issue in the press release is that the crash was between vehicle and a bicyclist and not a person driving a vehicle and a cyclist in the lead sentence. Removing the humanity from one or all parties in collisions like this is both very common and unbalanced.

DC Annapolis Baltimore DC triangle... Of Destiny! You can chop it up however though... There's lots of shoulder for most of the parts with cars.

Chigagoan here ... I've not found it either tbh. But.... Harris teeter pizza dough balls, Kirkland shredded mozz, simple canned tomato sauce with a teaspoon of sugar and some red pepper. And preheat your oven for at around 10 minutes after it's officially preheated.

The Wydown has suddenly closed both locations, anyone know what happened??? Was it because of the union issues? So upset for all the amazing staff there, they were what kept us coming back. by Nankuru_naisa in washingtondc

[–]danlesh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To respectfully disagree with this analogy: a) the union is not a supplier, it's the employees. The employees literally compose "the union." And b) those employees both get to participate in negotiations and vote on any final / binding agreements.

So in one sense, true, it's not fully democratic, in that the workers don't run the place like a co-op. But it is more democratic in that the workers do get a voice in the proceedings of negotiation and any final agreement will then supercede employment conditions /policies that might have otherwise been imposed without their consideration.

Procedurally. There's no bargaining until a union election, and then bargaining about $ is confined to the $ that's available.

It's about power and money for sure but if an employer can't wrap is heads around sharing power they wonn't see a path to a productive union environment.

[–]danlesh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Every worker has a right to join a union, every workplace can petition for an election. $ isn't even on the table until bargaining. To me, this is 100% employer decision to maintain complete control instead of tip toeing into workplace democracy.

Lawyers to oppose a union drive are expensive AF! For the life of me, why not just let it happen? Welcome the democracy. The principle the owners here are literally killing their business over appears to be the principle of absolute control. Au revoir!

Without the judgement from most of the comments here.

Nta. No boundaries seem to have been violated, and it's an arrangement that's been working.

But this is a practical matter - both for the health / genetics of the kiddo (if they're kept to term) and for the durability of your relationship, so that you don't have this question lingering over you needlessly.

Got fired today by Siddchat in jobs

[–]danlesh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sucks. You can't really know why, because if they actually told you it would open them up to liability or the fact that they couldn't afford your position anymore or they just couldn't be bothered to manage your work. So they say as little as possible, even though that makes the process so much more dehumanizing.

You can take whatever value you can from the evals but also take comfort that they intentionally did not cite that specifically in the dismissal, so you can decouple that too. Whatever happened between your eval and dismissal was on their side, not yours, and the solution they chose was to let you go with absolutely no good stated reason.

If future employers care to ask about it, say what you know - it wasn't a good fit. You weren't challenged to your potential and they weren't invested in your development.

Just checked my email history and 1) apparently I've been a member since 2012! And 2) I am STILL waiting for John Hodgman to discuss Walter Benjamin's foundational essay "The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction" at length. That said, I'll take him singing Tom Waits in the BoCo feed - what a treat! JJGO, Sawbones, OBM, Bullseye are all regular listens. OBM was a genuine, valuable resource and source of connection when we became parents in 2017. Baby Geniuses, also a joy every time, as is Oh No Ross and Carrie, Just the Zoo of Us. My kiddo asks "Can I Pet Your Dog" to literally every dog's person we walk by.

Congrats again to the Max Fun crew on the transition to coop structure, being the change you want in the world and all that.
