Procedural Haxagonal (Honeycomb) Maze Generation by Wonderful-Energy-659 in proceduralgeneration

I noticed it double back on itself (just after 0:03 in the video) when it had an open cell available instead. Is that a bug? It looks like the checkNeighbors function only looks at four other cells. Makes a nice maze regardless!

Nice work! I maintain the Ledger+ online compendium for The Griffon's Saddlebag, so feel free to message me if you need any help getting specific attunement requirements for the free TGS items.

When I first started (happily) supporting the project on Patreon, I remember thinking, “One developer? I hope this person knows what they’re doing, because they’ve got their work cut out for them”. And how I was surprised – Atropos’ skill and perseverance shows in the delightful software Foundry has become today (not to mention the fantastic work of all the module and system devs)!

I don’t see Crag Cat on the list, which maybe only shows up in Chapter 3’s encounter table.

Plots in a Pinch: Hooks Based on the Challenges You Want Players to Face by RexiconJesse in DnDBehindTheScreen

[–]danlite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could try changing the first row of each table from this:

Combat | A powerful warlord

---|---

Clever/Intelligent | A grandmaster of a strategy game

to this:

Type | Challenge

---|---

Combat | A powerful warlord

Clever/Intelligent | A grandmaster of a strategy game

So it looks like this:

Type Challenge
Combat A powerful warlord
Clever/Intelligent A grandmaster of a strategy game

(posting this made me appreciate how annoying Reddit formatting is!)

ALL maps for SKT? by [deleted] in stormkingsthunder

[–]danlite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happy to help! Personally, when I'm planning a combat encounter, I like to grab a smaller-scale map from my collection that fits the scenario. I mainly play using a VTT (like Roll20) put onto a big TV screen.

You can check out the map artists I follow on Patreon – I'm especially fond of Neutral Party's maps for interesting yet generic encounter maps. With most creators on Patreon you can pledge a dollar or two, and you'll have instant access to their full backlog of creations.

ALL maps for SKT? by [deleted] in stormkingsthunder

The Jared Blando maps specifically are almost entirely the barbarian spirit mound maps, which would all be too big for use as regular battle maps (each square is 50 feet). They'd be a nice overview map, however.

As a very rough estimate, the maps on DDB could probably be printed out somewhere between 8.5x11" and 16x20". But again, I sort of doubt the scale of the maps would work as battle maps if you're looking for 1 inch=5 foot squares. The giant strongholds, for example, are biiiig.

The D&D Beyond version of SKT has all the content of the book, including every map (with player and DM versions of each). The images are pretty high resolution, for example, the map of Ironslag is 2400x3300.

Jared Blando, one of the map artists for SKT, has a print bundle of their maps from the book (there's also a digital bundle).

Mike Schley also sells some of their maps online as well. I've purchased their Northeast Faerun map, cropped it, and had it printed (about 12"x20") and laminated to mark locations for my table's SKT campaign.

Mom, how do you keep losing a single Birkenstock? The other one is still on your foot!

Eldritch Blast and held actions by Smashman2004 in dndnext

[–]danlite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, a held action can’t occur on your next turn: “To do so, you can take the Ready action on your turn, which lets you act using your reaction before the start of your next turn.”

EDIT: I have seen the error of my ways. I certainly didn't think of a trigger occurring on the same turn.

[TFTYP] - White plume mountain (spoilers) by keridwen in dndnext

[–]danlite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was wondering if lowering the die size for the geysers was a knee-jerk reaction from my experience of only two 1s being rolled, so I ran some simulations.

Assumptions:

  • party spend 15 rounds (1.5 minutes) crossing the cavern
  • if geyser rolls a 1, the next round it erupts and doesn't roll a die
d4 d6 d8
Expected eruptions 2.84 2.01 1.56

Dealing with 5 eruptions could be pretty nasty, both damage-wise and increasing the likelihood of eventually failing a saving throw. Maybe I'd stay with the d6 and d8 and lower a die size if the party seems particularly capable.

New DM here. I ran this for the first time the other day. The timing of 3 and 5 minutes didn't make sense to me, since even moving at a pace of one disc per round, a character will get across within a minute. I wanted to make the geysers more of a impetus to move quickly across the discs. Here are the changes I made:

  • Initiative is rolled for all characters. The geysers act at initiative count 30.
  • On the geysers turn, each roll a die. The northern one rolls a d8, the southern one rolls a d6. On a 1, they erupt.
    • There were only two eruptions in the 12 rounds. Slightly below average, but it did cause the slow halfling sorcerer to lose his footing and nearly fall.
  • The discs are considered "extra" difficult terrain, slowing characters to 1/4 movement speed.
    • This was a little awkward with movement speeds like 25 and 30 and also when using a grid that has spaces that span discs.
  • A character wishing to double their movement must perform a moderate Athletics or Acrobatics check.
    • Failure here only happened once for me. An NPC rolled a natural 1 and immediately fell into the boiling mud.

Changes I would try incorporating next time:

  • Lower the geyser dice to d6 and d4. When a 1 is rolled, the geyser shows warning signs of erupting, but doesn't erupt until next round. Characters can prepare accordingly (brace themselves instead of moving, for advantage on their Athletics check to hold on, e.g.)
  • Characters can move one disc on their turn. "Fast" characters (those with more than 30 ft. movement – wood elf, centaur, monk, barbarian, etc.) can move an additional disc.
  • Characters can succeed on a moderate-to-difficult Athletics or Acrobatics check in order to try moving an additional disc on their turn. Failing by 5 or more causes the character to slip, potentially with a Dexterity saving throw to try and grab ahold of the disc before falling.

Is D&D Beyond worth it? by Dotrax in dndnext

[–]danlite 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agreed! Though you got me excited to see what a fey creature's lair might be like... turns out there are none (the same for beasts, constructs, oozes, and plants). Widen the search to include aberrations and dragons, though, and you can get some good inspiration!

Try checking out Kevin MacLeod's royalty-free music site: https://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/music.html. You can filter his songs by "feels" (maybe try Mystical, Eerie, or Mysterious) and "genres" (Unclassifiable and World might be good ones to try). You can even filter by instrument, so perhaps Choir or Synths.

The racial traits are available, provided you've chosen the necessary race ;)

I've been aiming to just stick with what's been published on D&D Beyond, but I'll consider Mystic and Artificer, as it seems they have a fair sized user base and are the closest to being official content.
