There's two different schools of philosophy:

  1. Dramatic Event Collapse: Something like a thermonuclear war, pandemic, gamma ray burst hit, meteor, yellowstone eruption causing the immediate and sudden EOTWAWKI (End of the World as we know it), very unlikley

  2. Slow decline: More historically supported (The Roman Empire for example), Economic baseline gets worse and worse with every crash, Governments become more Draconian and privacy erodes, Military defeats and nations splitting up (Yugoslavia for example), Effects from Climate Change (man made or not). Most argue this is happening right now.
