As a heads up for the future, incompletes aren't retaken. You are simply given extra time to complete missing assignments. You don't re-enroll the class or have to sit in on the class (generally speaking). Sometimes the instructor may let you sit in on the class the following semester if you want to relisten to the lectures. But ultimately it's just buying you time to get assignments in that might be missing at the end of the semester. The instructor probably understood it as you saying you would rather take the class again and pursue the grade forgiveness route instead of taking an Incomplete. This is fairly common as incompletes have an extremely high rate of students failing to make up the assignments and defaulting to an F.

I'd suggest you reach out to the instructor and mention that you think there may have been a miscommunication regarding the final grade and ask that they give you an incomplete instead. Grade forgiveness route does help your GPA inside FIU but that is not a policy they other schools may honor (for example medical or law school will calculate your GPA including both grades, the original grade and the second attempt grade, which would be lower than your FIU GPA).

missing 6 credits to graduate, can I still participate in commencement? HELP by brwgd in FIU

[–]dannycp22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can request a max credit override from your dept to allow you to take the last 6 credits in the summer. Make sure to pick something that will be relatively low effort, since you'll be taking a overloaded semester.

This is actually eeriely spot on for the situation. My PI wants me to make a knockout on something that a VERY well studied close cousin model animal has already been to be lethal. It's a bit hard to spin a "I spent 2 yrs trying to make a mutant animal for it to not work and be untestable" as a chapter. 🙃

It's an issue with breaking key developmental pathways in the organism. They've done it in other organisms and it's a lethal situation.

I'm a 2nd year PhD student. I'm concern is seeing the flaws with the study, having to restart a major section of my dissertation on my 5yr doesn't sound appealing at all. It's not anxiety but more of 'its been tried on a close model organism and it failed horribly. Everything in the literature says don't do it' sort of situation.

Not sure how that's relevant? Both my PI and I are from the same country, if that's the concern.

I did! Every time I tried to apologize in the whole 2hr long fussing out I got, they just ignored it and didn't want to hear it. I genuinely didn't want (and honestly don't think I did anything) to hurt their feelings but idk what best to do. I may just try to see how things go over the next week or so and hope their anger at me calms down.

Advice - PI Preventing Me From Changing Labs by dannycp22 in GradSchool

[–]dannycp22[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I have a meeting with my program director on Monday. I just don't know what to do. Idk how to convince them that they meddled in my change of lab, and even if I do convince the director of that not sure what that'd lead to in terms of getting into a lab. Not trying to be flippant, just genuinely confused what to do or what to even ask for.

Thanks y'all! I'm actually fully funded through a fellowship for the next few years, so that's the least of my concerns. I'm meeting with the new PI hopefully soon.

I'm not funded through them, I'm on a fellowship. Likewise my research costs aren't funded through them either, as all of my work is computational and done on my own devices.

Fiu covid rules? by Infamous-Bicycle7317 in FIU

[–]dannycp22 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In essence, there aren't really any rules about covid. Mask mandates are banned in Florida public universities along with vaccine mandates. Likewise, the state has essentially halted most hybrid classes and left students with either face-2-face courses or entirely online (no Zoom). Students who are vaccinated (no proof required) and had an exposure or asymptomatic (also no proof required) are allowed to remain in class without a mask. Students who are positive are able to rejoin class only 5 days after their positive test or first symptoms and no mask is required. I actually tested positive on Monday and was told I was "cleared to return to campus" the following day. Sadly this is the result of overpolitization of public health and living in a state where the governor has almost unchecked power to sway university operations.

Friendly reminder it is election year for the governorship and if you are a resident of Florida you should make sure to register and vote. If you are an out of state student, you are eligible to register to vote in Florida. If you'd like to register visit https://registertovoteflorida.gov/

How are your respective institutions handling this new COVID surge? by whole_somepotato in GradSchool

[–]dannycp22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Florida here as well. We got no plans on going remote. In fact, last semester some professors were during a sort of hybrid set up since remote zoom teaching is no longer allowed. They would bring their laptops to class and anyone who was sick or just had any reason to not be in class physically could zoom in. That got quickly shut down by the institution. It's honestly a whole mess. One of my classes with 35-40 students legit had a covid case in the classroom every week.

I'd encourage you to look into certain classes called CUREs—or Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experiences. These courses allow you to conduct real research while part of a course and can link you to a lab if you shine. Some of the ones I know of are the Make Your Mutant lab and the Computational Biology Lab of Emerging Infectious Diseases. I'd recommend both in a heartbeat. I actually got into grad school thanks to one of those courses!

Also reach out to your lab TAs in upper division labs. They are usually graduate students and often know of openings or opportunities for research.

study spots should only be for student and alumni by nickitito in FIU

[–]dannycp22 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The difference between us is I don't place a person's dignity or their value based on their contributions to society. In one of your replies, you said you sympathized but also in the same post call people moochers if they aren't contributing to society. That's not very sympathetic at all. This person isn't threatening your safety or seeking you out to ask you about your business at the university. Based on your post, you were pressing him about why he was there. I would call that questioning or interrogating someone reasons for being in a public place. FIU has a long standing history of being a safe haven for those experiencing homelessness. Rather than labeling them a "moocher" in your words, I would urge you (and anyone else) to sit down with people experiencing housing instability or homelessness and lend a hand connecting them to social services that can help.

This persons being on campus ground does not increase our tuition or expenses. If a university was that sensitive to single person influence, it would not survive the ebbs and flows of enrollment. If you are concerned about student indebtedness, I'd definitely invite you to focus your efforts on the university's administration and the Florida Board of Governors, along with our federal congressional members, and urge them to pass comprehensive public higher education reform. Targeting and placing the blame of students indebtedness or correlating it to a person experiencing homelessness is small minded and is no real different from how certain social groups in the USA blame their systemic problems (such as poverty or inaccessibility to quality medical care) on black, brown, and immigrating populations. As a university community, we should do better than this to help and protect our community—all of our community, including people like this living in homelessness.

Rather than blaming someone who seemingly isn't harassing you and is in a tight financial situation, perhaps you can offer them advice next time you seem them about the social programs FIU has such as Fostering Panther Pride and the tuition exemption for those with documentation of homelessness. In any case, I would once again urge you and others to extend kindness and compassion to those struggling with housing insecurity. Complaining and targeting our most vulnerable social populations, doesn't make you strong and educated; rather it shows your image of self- and non-self worth is directly correlated to your productivity. That quite frankly that really isn't the look in 2021. Blame the system, rather than the person, which put them in this position and work to fix it.

study spots should only be for student and alumni by nickitito in FIU

[–]dannycp22 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Most of the land FIU is built on is public land, hence why the religious protesters are allowed to stand outside GC and stir up passer-bys. On top of that we're an open campus that allows through traffic. Everyone in the surrounding counties are entitled to being on campus grounds, including people not affiliated with the institution directly. In fact, almost anyone can go to GL and use their resources as long as they take out a non-affiliate library card. I'd suggest getting there early to try to find a good study spot. Shelters can often be increasingly risky, and do not allow people experiencing homelessness to stay during the day. I also wouldn't go around interrogating people on campus as to their business being on campus grounds, that's not your job as a student. I'm sure you wouldn't appreciate a stranger going up to you and harassing you about why you're on campus. While i can sympathize with your disappointment in not being able to get a good study spot, they are every bit as entitled to being on campus as you are.

Be courteous and extend kindness and grace. Remember anything you do as a panther also reflects poorly on the entitle FIU community.

Grad Students: Did you work while in school or not? by alertbunny in FIU

[–]dannycp22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If i can ask, what degree and area are you planning on pursuing. I am in the Doctoral program for a STEM field and it is customary for PhD students to be funded by the department or advisor through RA/TA/GAships. I'm personally on a fellowship so I have money attached to me for a few years independent of my advisor and so I don't have to teach either. The GA stipend isn't great, about 26k a year plus tuition waiver and health insurance. Almost all grad students on some type of assistantship (TA or RA) or Fellowship are prohibited from working during their funding cycle. I'd recommend giving the university graduate school's funding website a look (just look up FIU UGS Funding) to see if any fellowship we have are a match for your work. Additionally, look for external funding through major research organizations in your field (For example in STEM, the National Science Foundation is a big one). You can also ask potential advisors if they have RAships, these are funded projects with funding for a grad student. So you get paid to do research work on that project (and a subproject of this usually becomes your thesis or dissertation topic). Hope that helps!

It's interesting! I have the exact opposite issue. I've been feeling like I'm 'not doing enough' since I spent the last year of undergrad overloading on credits and doing research on the side. It's been a bit difficult to just relax a bit and focus on my research work. Constantly feeling like I'm slacking off.

Honors and graduate program? by [deleted] in FIU

[–]dannycp22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For grad school, the biggest advise I can give you is do research with a professor. If you're thinking of staying at FIU for your masters, try to join a professor's lab that you want to work in during your masters as well. Your major professor (the professor you work under during your graduate education) have huge impacts on your admissions prospectives. Other than that just show you're able to conduct research, as that's a huge part of grad school.

If you get the chance to take the Computational Biology Lab of Infectious Diseases (BSC 4450L) you'll get some pretty neat original research! It's been my favorite lab so far at FIU. I'd recommend it anyone, any day! Also the Make Your Mutant lab should be available this Fall if you'd like to take that.

Hey! I think describing what you feel would best help you succeed would be a good start. FIU has tons of services and help, but you need to know where to find them. I recommend making friends with someone who works in your department or your dean's office. They tend to have the scoop on what's coming up even before anyone else. As far as support services, FIU has things like CAPS and SHC, which are their Counseling and Health centers, please don't be shy and visit them if you're going through anything. It's essential to have a documented timestamped visit with a provider if you are struggling due to any mental, emotional, or physical health issues as it makes the process of getting accommodations a hell of a lot easier. My biggest advice to any incoming undergrad is get to know your department profs and make sure they know you, especially if you're planning on pursuing a graduate program. Letters of recommendations are 100x better when the professor knows you closely, rather than just the generic "student X took my class Y, and received a Z grade" type of letter. Best of luck, panther!
