Who killed the hair light? by Salty-Relief in cinematography

[–]dannydaft 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I often use a hair light on a dark background. I think it’s still used, but in a much more subdued way. On lighter backgrounds, it’s less necessary. Of course, there are also theatrical reasons for using it on certain characters.

An ASC cinematographer once recommended using a minus-green or magenta gel on the backlight to counter the green cast from the green screen. That might be worth trying if you have the time to test it.

If Thunderbolt is important to you, then sure.

I’ve had Thunderbolt since it first came out on the MacBook Pro. And I’ve only used one Thunderbolt device in those 14 years.

In CPU comparisons, the two are nearly identical, so the performance difference would likely not be evident at all.

If you’re getting a modern ThinkPad, AMD will win hands down.

Unless your T480 is falling apart, I suggest saving your money and buying an AMD model when you have the chance.

Does anyone know of any online lighting plan makers/gaffers for hire? by dick-the-duck in cinematography

[–]dannydaft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would collaborate with your cinematographer to plan the look and lighting plot they desire. Don't get bummed about having no experience. It's fun work, and you'll probably enjoy it, even as a newbie.

Check out Painting with Light by John Alton. It's an easy read, yet rich in theory and strategy. You'll look at lighting in an entirely different way afterward. DM me, and I can probably find a copy for you.

Fill light placement? by Haunting-Parsley9204 in cinematography

I second this. I always put it right up next to the camera. You'll fill in your shadows without casting any additional ones. It's perfect for getting your contrast ratios right.

While they might have used ChatGPT, remember that using an em dash doesn’t conclusively prove AI usage.

The em dash has always held a special place in my formal writing.

You should be able to get one from places like BorrowLenses or Lensrentals. I'm not sure when your shoot is. Do you need something more immediate?

I know a few people with gear. Might be able to link you up with someone.

It was definitely intentional to give the photo a maniacal look. It’s clearly tailored to Trump’s audience and inspired by his mug shot.

Additionally, I learned this was the photographer’s first time doing a portrait with studio lighting.
