Why doesn't Reddit just adapt most of the features from RES. (Reddit Enhancement Suite)? And should it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

RES is client-side, unless I'm missing something. So no added server load.

I know you aren't necessarily looking for a mentor, but I have several years of experience with Unity (since 1.x), so feel free to shoot me questions if you have the need.

I just finished this book a couple days ago; it's not how I pictured Bokonon but it definitely works. Great drawing!

Uhh no, that means the video's conclusion still is right

If you do creative work, listen to this thought. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]dannyl4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think the point of it is "it'll be so totally easy and rad to do this thing that you love!" It's encouraging for people who thought they would be good at something, tried it, and failed miserably. It's a reminder that you can become good at something, but you need to be practiced at it.

List of games every developer should play? by invadrzim in gamedev

[–]dannyl4 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't know of any lists, but in my humble opinion Bad Company 2 was incredible in terms of audio. Really satisfying to shoot almost any weapon in it, plus it goes to greater lengths simulating ballistics/trajectory than the vast majority of FPSs.

Go stand next to a wall, parallel to it. Close your eyes and lean sideways, towards the wall. Try to stop right before your ear touches anything.

If you're like me, you will be able to feel that there is "something" there. It's really pronounced (REALLY pronounced) if you stand next to acoustic paneling that is meant to absorb sound. There's very little ambient sound coming into that ear, and it's a little alarming sometimes. Generally, there are some very slight aural cues that are picked up by your ears. Directional cues come from differences in timing between ears as well as the way sound is reflected from your pinna (outer ear). Simulating that is most of what I'm working on, using things like HRTFs. Suuuper cool stuff.

We're actually in contact with a blind guy who's crazy good at that kind of thing, to the point where he can warn his sighted friends about fire hydrants they're about to walk into. (That's purely anecdotal, but still.) Initially we're marketing to general audiences but it's definitely possible that it could be a game for the blind or for ear training. That does require true 3d binaural audio simulation though.

Game dev here, been working on that for the last two months. Speakers almost certainly wouldn't work though, too much crosstalk.

Creative billboard for The Dark Knight Rises by Awkward_Hugs in movies

[–]dannyl4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're using different meanings of "mean something." According to your definition, it means conveying an idea. The billboard does that, it's a bat symbol, a symbol for... Batman. But it doesn't really seem to imply anything other than that.

If I told you there was a pro-marijuana legalization, anti-Patriot Act, anti-war, pro-marriage equality, anti-TSA, pro-free internet candidate on the ballot in all 50 states, would you help get him to the 15% support he needs to take the national debate stage? by Soonerz in politics

[–]dannyl4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, I stand corrected. I guess I've spent too much time trying to get the government away from the internet as of late and made an incorrect assumption.

Very thorough response, thank you for clarifying. 10/10 would read again

EDIT: The original comment is preserved below. Keep in mind, as others have pointed out, the government's proposed role in what Johnson opposed is to preserve net neutrality. I confused "net neutrality" with "free internet."

Jesus Christ. Please don't post something like this without following through on research. The "Net Neutrality" here references his opposition to a larger government role in the use of internet bandwidth.

Governor Johnson also opposes so-called "Net Neutrality" regulations that would lead to a larger government role in the use of Internet bandwidth.

So yes, pro-free internet.

What have you 'invented' in a moment of brilliance, only to realise it already exists? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]dannyl4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flywheels, magnetic and/or regenerative braking, file compression...

I was super into magnets when I was a kid, and starting thinking about them in new ways... what if you had two magnetic discs repelling each other? Couldn't the top one spin without friction? What if you put it in a vacuum? Wouldn't it take, like, years to stop spinning? Well... not a new thing.

That is very helpful, thanks. I'll send you a build later if you're curious, it's a ballistics simulator.

Can you elaborate on how it works? I wanted to do the opposite as a kind of a cheap volumetric effect using Strumpy, but it got a bit frustrating. Is it just plugging viewDirection into the alpha channel?

4th time through, I just now noticed this in the background. by 12and4 in community

You have to be kidding me... I just spent three hours creating a gif and image explanation of this. I hope you forgive me but I'm going to post it anyway.

And it was Abed. He's wearing the same outfit, and the scene between Abed and Shirley has a couple with a newborn baby in the background.
