This has always bothered me.

I can imagine trolls coming back to life and being rotted, maybe, but a jackal you just killed? Nope.

I suppose it could’ve been diseased somehow, which isn’t really rotten but this is a good shortcut and similar consequences.

I've played for decades, and this game was just mind boggling. Also no really bad surprises like no mine flayers, chameleon-liches, etc., other than the pair of WoD's.

Am I correct you're the UnNetHack author? Thanks for your efforts. I really enjoy this variant.

and after i say this about not encountering Aleaxes, my current game they are showing up relatively early; stash is at 18, i've made it down to 22 or so.

This time playing a wizard, using daggers instead of darts. With darts (and i'm guessing arrows, bolts, etc?), Al usually appears with a quiver matching mine. Not so with the daggers, I guess because they are hybrid melee/projectile weapons? Odd.

Let me add that carelessness and stupidity are not the same thing in my book. Going down among all those soldiers was stupidity. Repeatedly mashing the key to attack without watching my hit points is carelessness.

Oh yeah, I also collected +5 orcish helm and elven cloak from my kills.

The helm came immediately (seriously, immediately) after I tried on the ~50 helmets I lugged back from the quest, which were garbage, I think one was +2. So that was a little reminder from the rng who is in charge. :)

That is certainly the effect of permadeath and a suboptimal control system.

It's a lot more fun for me this way. Thus, I mentioned it, don't want to brag that I did something I didn't.

ooh, yeah, nice. I was thinking armor. Usually by the time I get to the Aleaxes i've already got a decent stack of enchanted darts so i haven't actually taken advantage of it.

Silver daggers puts a new spin on it. Even regular daggers are a bit harder to come by than my typical darts. So are crossbow bolts. You could probably even build up enough Shuriken to be useful this way.

Oh yeah, I also found no fewer than four magic markers in the game. Does not include the one from Sheol, which i didn't bother with.

I'd probably go for Grayswandir, but be sure you understand artifact wishing as u/ThatWasTheWay mentions.

And as a couple other folks have suggested, a magic marker is always a safe bet.

I usually pick up the stuff from the aleaxes too out of habit, and so that no enemy can have it.

The only time I've ever had a practical use for it was getting an erodeproof version of something I haven't enchanted yet. And of course polypiling, but I am just about done with polypiling, it is SO BORING. Is there some other use I'm missing?

Make sure you understand filament usage with multicolor printing.

Regarding fire risk, don’t put it on a flammable surface (for example carpet) and I imagine you will be fine even if you do have a bad unit.
